A drive along the shores of...

by Lyn_2

A drive along the shores of Bodensee will offer lots of suprises. Germany, Switzerland and Austria all border Bodensee (Lake Konstanz). It is ringed with little towns and resorts. A bike path goes all around the lake. You can rent small sailboats, yachts, windsurfing boards, and bikes. The town of Lindau is located on the coast of Bodensee. It is an ancient town that is surrounded by the lake. The seated lion is the proud symbol of Bavaria. He is carved from marble and looks out over the lake from the harbor. The old lighthouse stands on top of the remains of the 13th century walls.

Try and get out into the Harz mountains which are like the European Smokies, full of trails for hiking and cross country skiing. Relatively untouched jewels of cities abound like Wernigerode with its foreboding castle.

Forschungsbraustuberl is a great small brewery in a small suburb of Munich. Take the S-bahn train line 1 southbound to Perlach. It's at Unterhachingstr. 76. Their Pilsissimus Export and St. Jakobus bock are well worth the short train ride. Lovely beer garden and earthen mugs. Try the cheesy O'batzen with it, yummy.

Enjoy German tranquility

by phildeni

This little village,Ober Kollnbach, would be missed by most visitors. It is near Landshut and has a wonderful small hotel. Gasthaus Lehner. Owned and operated by Herr and Frau Lehner. She prepares great food and he is liable to beat you at the game of pool.No tourist traps here. Just great people and relaxation. Walk to an Abbey too.Oberkollnbach is not on any map I have seen of Germany,so you may have to contact me if you want to go there. It is really 'off the beaten path.'

The traditional and ancient form of Fasnet (which would be wrongly translated with 'carnival') is something that has nearly died out even in the Southwest, where it originated. You can still experience it in some small towns in the Black Forest or Schwäbische Alb.It lasts only 2 - 3 days, depending on the town. The date varies with the full moon - it starts always on sunday or monday seven weeks before Easter and lasts until tuesday midnight. A good place to see it could be Rottweil or Oberndorf, both on the Stuttgart-Singen train southwest of Stuttgart. Note: You'll have to get up early for the main events start usually on monday morning at 7 or 8 o'clock...

by jhawk1000

The brewery and restaurant at Andechs near Herrsching near Munich is one of the treats for travelers. During the summer, a rooftop outside terrace allows friends to drink, eat and view the surroundings. Inside is also a great place to enjoy. As it fills, more and more people will join you at your table and it becomes very friendly and cosmopolitan.

This is a picture of a rooster that stands guard at the 'main entrance' to the Black Forest. Can you spot it - perched high above the cliff?? I'm sure there's a tale behind why this rooster is placed here but right now, I can't remember a thing! :-(( Anyhow, stop your car and come out to take a pic of this rooster. A great souvenir for your album back home. :-))

by Blondie2

Tubingen, in the southwest part of the country is a quaint college town with lots of personality.Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the preserved medieval township, was definitely worth the trek. Off Rt. 9 on the Rhein, south of St. Goar is a town called Oberweisal. There was a church there with a cemetary that included a flowerbed surrounding each gravesite (maintained by the family). It was amazing and touching somehow.

by KathyW

We had driven past the sign to the Wieskirche on a previous trip. Only later-- when we studied our guidebook-- did we realize what we had missed. DON'T MISS THIS!! The church is located off the Romantic Road, north of Fussen and just a few miles north of the town of Steingaden. The Wieskirche is considered one of the most extravagant and flamboyant rococo buildings in the world, all the more unusual because it is literally out in the middle of nowhere! The church was built between 1746 and 1754, the work of Dominikus Zimmermann and his brother. There were a few small kiosks near the church, but they were closed on the December morning when we visited. We were all alone with the beauty of the Wieskirche.
