Generally, travelers are too regimented and too afraid of wandering off the beaten path. For example, we celebrated Pentacost by joining a procession after Mass at a small Bavarian church in Rupberg. Then, after Mass we joined the parishioners at the annual festival--brats and beer and fellowship.

Visitors tend to stay on the main highway or local Autobahn. Know that there are hundreds of Autobahns in Germany as the word means ' Highway '. On most Highways you will pass small villages that offer very unique structors, statues, Chirches, and the old fashoned ' Fachwerk ' Houses. Go off the path and see inside ' world friendly ' Germany. The picture shown is ' off the beaten Path ' and is of a Monestary that has stood for over 1,300 years in the Town of Blaubeuren. If you happen to be there make sure to ask directions to Blau - Topf. A beautifully blue aqautic site that will stay in your mind for ever.
Ost-Friesland's chief claim to fame is it's fantastic collection of Renaissance and Baroque organs. Most vilages have one and they are VERY PROUD of them. Unfortunately the churches are kept locked, but the tourist authorities in the area will have information on tours (held in German) so you can at least get a look and since the place is heaving with pilgrim organists you're likely to be able to hear them too. The parish church in Pilsum has one of the most beautiful organs in the region. In Rysum, the organ dating from 1457 (and still being played) is accesible by ringing the bell at Frau Leling's house across the street.If you're an organist she's happy to let you play it. In summer, the great Schnitger organ at the Ludgerikirche in Norden is used for a concert series. This organ is one of Germany's national treasures.
St. Goar is a little place on the banks of the Rhine, and probably renowned for being one of the largest Beer Stein manufacturers, also know for teddy bears and cuckoo clocks. For those who love a little history, there are castles all over the place, or perhaps even find windtasting in a 300 year old cellar.
Also at bodensee, visit Lindau, a great little town built entirely on an island. Literall a stone's throw from the Austrian border, with Bregenz and it's floating stage in easy view, Lindau is a nice place to go for a Sunday afternoon stroll. The picture is of the Rathaus, in the town centre.
Bodensee. It's a great lake in the South that borders both Switzerland and Austria. I've been here several times now, once in 1991, again in 96, and finally in 98. This pic shows me here in 1996, at Uberlingen.
On July 16th 2000 we picked out tour 20 of the 'Bahn & Bike' tour book. We left the car in Lueneburg town and pedaled northwards along the Elbe side canal. In Scharnebeck we visited the famous ship lift. Built for ships to 1.350 T - Height : 38 metres - Years of construction : 1968 - 1975. We crossed the river Elbe and payed a visit to Lauenburg with its old town centre (federal state Schleswig-Holstein).
If you plan bicycle trips it's impotant to dispose of detailed topographic maps. So you can avoid the mostly crowded and dangerous main roads and enjoy the quietude of the country roads or cycle-tracks.'Bahn & Bike', published by the Deutsche Bahn AG decribes more than hundred tours all over Germany. They all start and end in a railwaystation, so it's easy to find your stating point. The distance is limited to +/- 40 kilometres a day, which is enough if you want to visit the places of interest on your way.
