Pietzmoor (Lüneburger Heide)

by MichaelFalk1969

The Pietzmoor is an extensive moor and heather area just outside Schneverdingen village. It is possible to hike on an elevated pathway with wooden planks for about 5 km through the moor landscape.Directions: Drive through Schneverdingen and follow the signs to "Soltau". Only a short distance after leaving the city, stop at parking-lot "Pietzmoor" on the left. Cross the street, go past Schäferhof cafe and follow the track till you reach wooden planks.

If you are having your vacation in Kiel in particular and Germany in general for a longer period, you may want to take a 3 day 2 night cruise onboard M/s Stena Line from Kiel to Göteborg, Sweden. It may well turn out to be one of the highlights of your vacation in Kiel! The cruise package includes cabin and each cabin can accommodate up to a maximum of four adults. Tierpark Sababurg

by MichaelFalk1969

The "Tierpark Sababurg" was once the hunting ground of the local counts (established 1571), who built a wall around the vast area to enjoy their hunting, undisturbed by peasants & poachers. The historic wall - to this day - is still surrounding the park. The park has specialised in species that once lived in Northern and Central Europe but have become extinct or driven out. Some animals are kept in huge herds of different species, like they possibly did in the time of the Neanderthals, so one can watch aurox, wild horses and deer intermingle. Two species are "recreations" of extinct species. The Aurox and the Tarpan wild horse have gone extinct centuries ago. The animals you see in Sababurg are the result of cross-breeding of different domesticated species that had known similarities with their extinct brethren, until the result was an animal that looked almost alike.

On this hill just west of Aachen is the Vaalserberg which is not only the highest peak of the Netherlands, it is the point where the borders of Holland, Belgium and Germany come together. There is a vey popular park on the Dutch side with several restaurants, forest walks and childrens' play areas. A tower on the Belgian side - Tour Baudoin - lets you get above the trees for a better look around.

Amorbach (Odenwald)

by MichaelFalk1969

Amorbach is a friendly village in the Odenwald area (in North-Eastern Bavaria, but only 1 hour from Frankfurt). Apart from a beautiful Old-Town, the main attractions are the baroque churches St. Gangolf and the Leiningen Monastery church, and also the historic library of the Counts of Leiningen. Another attraction is the ancient and idylllic "Templerhaus", one of the oldest remaining historic houses in Germany, dating back to 1291. The Amorbach area is also great for hiking within the Odenwald woods - the local tourist info has several good suggestions for roundtrips.

chill out in Heligoland

by vpas

From Hamburg you could go to Helgoland which is an island. It has sailing facilities(you will find so many sail boats in the landing place, which makes it very picturisque. It has tax free shopping. It takes approximately 2 hours sailing time from Cuxhaven at the mouth of the River ElbeThe cute houses with extensive flower pathways are a lovely sight to behold. The whole atmosphere is relaxing. You could buy perfumes, cheese, alchohol and other items. There are plenty of guest houses and inns. The food is in plenty too.In the main inlet area of the island, sometimes live music concerts are arranged. You could just hang around the area and relax. You could take long walks all over the island and cover it entirely on foot,as it is not a very big island. The upper area is called Oberland,Helgoland. This is a great option for a weekend getaway from Hamburg.

Felsenmeer Lautertal-Reichenbach

by MichaelFalk1969

In the small village of Lautertal-Reichenbach (Odenwald region) the "Felsenmeer" is located, a conglomeration of giant boulders that can be explored by several hiking paths. Even the Romans made use of those boulders. The stonemasons even left their clearly recognizable marks on some of the stones. The "Felsenmeer" is marked by signs with a brown dot. From Frankfurt, drive direction Heidelberg and then take the exit "Michelstadt". Drive further direction Michelstadt, the Felsenmeer is sign-marked.

Bückeburg - Schloss/Stadtkirche

by MichaelFalk1969

Bückeburgs (near Hameln) main attraction is the castle, built in the style of the "Weser-Renaissance", with an attractive palace garden/park and a grave monument (mausoleum) from the 19th century for the local dynasty of Schaumburg-Lippe, built in the likeness of a roman basilica. The portal that connects the palace grounds with the market square of Bückeburg is richly decorated with dragon sculptures. If you leave the castle grounds through this gate and follow the street to your left, you will end up at the equally beautiful town church (Stadtkirche). Bückeburg is not well-known, but worth a visit.

Kaiser Wilhelm-Monument - Porta Westfalica

by MichaelFalk1969

The small town of Porta Westfalica near Bielefeld is best known for a historical monument of the first (modern) German Emperor Wilhelm I., standing on top of a small mountain, with a great view on the town and the surrounding region. When Wilhelm died in 1888, many cities in Germany hurried to dedicate monuments to honour the late Emperor to prove their patriotic feelings. The building started 1892 and was completed in 1896.
