a great place for all fans of vintage-cars

by globetrott

In the Black Forest, close to Hinterzarten and Freiburg im Breisgau you will find one of the best specialists for the restoring of vintage cars of all types : British Classic Cars in D-79286 Glottertal - Talstraße 14I have been there several times, admiring these wonderful cars, that are unfortunately totally out of my financial range. To a certain extent you may take a look at these cars, when you are lucky to find a nice soul letting you into the big hall. A few cars are also standing outside of the Garage, but those are sometimes in poor condition and waiting for their time to be restored. In any case, for car-enthousiasts there is also one of the best collections of rare vintage-cars close to Freiburg, just a few km over the border in France : The Schlumpf-Collection in Muhouse/FranceDriving there by car is just a bit more than 1 hour from Freiburg im Breisgau: The world's largest...

by globetrott

Blankenese is a small village in the outskirts of Hamburg, in the west of the port and along the river Elbe and it is mainly well known for lovely villas facing the river Elbe. Rich and wealthy people built their regular residence or summerhouses there. All of the houses there seem to be noble villas, take a look at my main photograph : Thats the Kindergarten of Blankenese !----------------------------------You can get to Blanenese easily by S-Bahn S1 and walk downhill from the train-station to the river Elbe, where you will see the most beautiful villas along your way downhill.

Soviet submarine U-434 as a museum in Hamburg

The Soviet spy-submarine U-434 as a museum is one of the modern attractions in the port of Hamburg : this submarine is one of the largest non-atomic-submarines in the world and you will be able to enter it like a museum and take a look at all details !In times of the cold war it was impossible to even see such submarines from a big distance, nowadays they are sold to the former enemies...You will find this submarine at Versmannstrasse 23CHafencity, Baakenhafen - get out at Metro-station Messhafen and walk another 15 minutes...The submarine is open for visitors at the following times :April 1st-October 3rd: Mon-10.00a.m.-06.00p.m.and from Friday till Sunday 09.00a.m.-07.00p.m.Oct. 4th-march 31st: daily 10.00a.m.-06.00p.m.entrance-fee is 8 euros (7,- for holders of hamburg-card)

Bergedorfer Schloss in Hamburg

by globetrott

Bergedorf is a small town in the westend and within the city-limits of Hamburg and it has a lot of beautiful half-timbered buildings including a very famous half-timbered church and a lovely water-castle : Bergedorfer Schloss that is used as a museum today. The interior of the museum is really worth a visit for some great furniture and old decorations - see some parts of it in my 3rd and 4th photograps !.Something special in Bergedorfer Schloss is an old confectionary dating back to the middle of the 19th century, it is fully equipped with lovely furniture and may be even rented for private festivities (my last pic).----------------------------------------------Go to Bergedorf by S2 or the regional-train R20. Both S-Bahn-trains are leaving at Hamburg Hauptbahnhof. Bergedorf is still inside the tarif of section A+B, that is included in the day-tickets of the HVV and the Hamburg-card !

Bergedorfer Kirche, a windmill & more

by globetrott

The old city centre of Bergedorf in the western part of Hamburg is worth seeing because of plenty of old halftimbered houses but the most beautiful is without doubt the beautiful half-timbered church, that you will see in my main photograph ! Unfortunately the church is not open to the public, but it looks great already from outside. Opposite of the church you will see an old inn (my 3rd picture), also with a beautiful and ornate facade. A bit outside of the city-centre of Bergedorf there is also an old wind-mill, it is privately owned and you can see just its outside from the fence, where I took my photo (my 4th photograph)----------------------------------------------You may get easily to Bergedorf by S2 or the regional-train R20. Both are leaving at Hamburg Hauptbahnhof. Bergedorf is still inside the tarif of section A+B, that is included in the day-tickets of the HVV and the...

The world's largest Coo-Coo-Clock is in Breitnau

by globetrott

The largest Coo-Coo-clock in the world is to be seen in Breitnau in the Black Forest / Schwarzwald, at least that is what I read about it, although other places also keep telling us the same for their giant clocks...In any case that clock is as big as an ordinary house and it includes even the man and woman in the traditional costumes on 1st floor that will show up, when it is sunny and will disappear, when it is raining. Inside of that building you will at least find a large souvenir-shop, frequented by hundreds of bus-tourists every day in summer and winter because of the convenient parking there, the many toilets etc. This giant coo-coo-clock is next to the large car-parking of Hofgut Sternen in Breitnau, about 15 km east of Freiburg im Breisgau.

Goethehaus & more in Breitnau/Schwarzwald

by globetrott

Breitnau im Schwarzwald is an interesting place of history : 1) Hofgut Sternen in Breitnau ( about 15 km east of Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a place of history, because it was one of the places, where Marie Antoinette (the austrian princess and youngest daughter of empress Maria Theresia) had a rest and spent the night on her way to Paris, where she was supposed to meet her future husband, the 15 years old Ludwig - the later king Ludwig XVI. Marie Antoinette herself was just 14 years old at that time.On top of the entrance to the hotel you may still see a painting commemorizing that special event and so you may get an idea, what such a royal carriage looked like.2) Directely opposite of Hofgut Sternen in Breitnau you will still see the house, where Johann Wolfgang von Goethe spent the night in september 29th, 1779 and nowadays it is still used as depandance of the hotel, so you can rent a...

great farmhouses in Hinterzarten

by globetrott

Hinterzarten in the Black Forrest is a great place to see some interesting remains of the old, traditional Schwarzwald Farmhouses :The old Saw mill of Jockelehof is one of them, but most of the tourists will never find it, except they find it accidentally : It is at the very end of Winterhaldenweg, a street that is a one-way through the wide landscape, it starts at the trainstation of Hinterzarten and the last 3 km - the most interesting part - is for "Nur für Anlieger" (Anlieger is defined as someone, who is searching for something, BUT not as someone, who wants to have a shorter road to Titisee). A tourist searching for that old architecture would be allowed to drive there !There is an artificial lake next to the mill in order to store the water that was needed to drive the mill. You may see the outside of that mill and may walk around the building freely and without restrictions.

Heaven and hell are close to e.o. in Black Forrest

by globetrott

Hoellental (hell-valley) is the name of the narrow and quite rough valley, where in ancient times all of the transports had to go through, when they wanted to go from Titisee/Neustadt to Freiburg im Breisgau. At the end of that hell-valley they called a small village : Himmelreich (heaven), certainly because all of the troubles were over in that flat landscape there.Even nowadays, when you have taken the steep road through the Höllental with plenty of heavy trucks in front of you, with icy bends in wintertime etc. you might be happy to be back on ordinary roads again. The village of Himmelreich itself has NO places of interest for the ordinary tourist, except maybe the funny name of the village printed out at the signpost in the train-station.It is really just a pity, that the station looks more like a Sprayer's heaven nowadays !b.t.w. take a look at my last picture : The village itself...

Schulau - The Willkomm-Hoeft of Hamburg

by globetrott

Schulau is an interesting place for all fans of cruiseships and when-ever extra-large cruiseships are arriving at or leaving Hamburg, thousands of people will go there to see the ships from a short distance. Schulau is a small village in the west of Hamburg and plenty of years ago a restaurant had started a service to greet all of the ships, passing by.Willkomm-Hoeft is a great restaurant with an excellent view on all of the ships passing by and at its ship-station it will show the flags and play the national anthem of the home-port of the ships passing by and they will also announce a message of welcome or fare-well in german and in the language of the ship-registry. Of course plenty of local people will be there, when the biggest cruise-ship in the world is leaving Hamburg ! On my pics : M/S Freedom of the Seas, the biggest cruiseship in the world in july 2006. In my last picture : M/S...
