Friedrichstadt - a "dutch colony" in Germany

by globetrott

Friedrichstadt is a small village with an interesting history in the north-west of Germany: When walking or taking a cruise through the artificial canals of Friedrichstadt you will have the feeling to be somewhere in the Netherlands. In the 17th century the Count of this district had the idea to let refugees from the Netherlands settle here and build some sort of a "Dutch Colony" including the construction of the typical, artificial canals and houses in dutch style.Take a look at my last picture : Such "leaning houses" are no mis-constructions. They rather were built that way in order to be able to transport goods to the upper levels with the help of a crane fixed on top.The things were finally taken in through the windows.

Museumshafen Kiel - for all fans of old ships

by globetrott

Kiel in the north of Germany is a great place to visit for all fans of old, traditional ships, mainly during the time of the so-called "Kieler Woche", but also all year long in a small part of the port, where old ships will be docked like in a museum :You will find this place not far from the place where the giant cruiseships are docking in Kiel My favorite one was an old ship with a nice restaurant built in - see my restaurant tip !From the city of Kiel you can walk to these ships over a folding-drawbridge, that will be folded, whenever larger ships will pass through. It was interesting to see that most of these old ships are still used for sailing-tours, like the one on my main photograph, that I saw docked in that port the 1st day, and on the 2nd day I saw it, when leaving the port !

Mueggesfelde

by globetrott

Mueggesfelde is another big manor-farm close to Bad Segeberg and my mother had to help there at the farm during WW II because all of the male population had to go to war and the young girls were sent to the farms as farm-helpers.Nowadays they mainly have horses and on my main picture you can see my mother paying a last visit in 2002, when we were on vacation nearby.

Tip Photo
Kollmar

by globetrott

Kollmar is one of the small villages, that you will pass through when driving along the river Elbe from Hamburg to Brunsbuettel. Kollmar looks so peacefully and the river Elbe is wide there like a giant lake, and in fact the big ships are passing by the village in a distance of 1 km or even more. A high dike is protecting the village against the floods and at the same time you can also walk ortake a ride on your bycicle on top of that dike in order to enjoy the great view and fresh air.Swimming is forbidden there because of polluted water !!!Maybe that is because of the atomic powerplant Brokdorf, maybe for other reasons !

Tip Photo
Sankt Margarethen

by globetrott

Sankt Margarethen is one of the scenic, tiny villages that you will pass through, whenever driving from Hamburg to Brunsbuettel along the river Elbe. Take a stop there and take a walk through the village when you like to see some interesting houses in a peaceful surrounding. Unfortunately the atomic powerplant of Brokdorf is in a distance of just 4 km. Interesting to see the old church with the seperate wooden belltower - see my 3rd and 4th photoraph, and some straw-thatched houses !

Tip Photo
Brokdorf

by globetrott

The small village of Brokdorf, in the north-west of Hamburg, stands mainly for an atomic power plant, that plenty of young people tried to fight against, but did not succed in the 1970s.Brokdorf is a lovely village as well with an interesting church and a few outstanding tomb-stones around of it. Take a walk through the village and you will see some really interesting farmhouses like the one on my main photograph ! Brokdorf is one of the villages, that you will pass by when driving along the river Elbe from Hamburg to Brunsbuettel.

Tip Photo
Hochdonn, an interesting place along the Kielcanal

by globetrott

Hochdonn is rather close to Fuhlsbuettel, at the beginning and west-end of Nord-Ostsee-Kanal / Kiel-Canal and it is an interesting place to go for "cruiseship-spotting" !The giant train-bridge of Hochdonn makes a perfect place to take pics of the cruiseships, see the gigantic construction of this bridge in my last photo : the landscape is totally flat there, so the trainstations are low as well, but then for the bridges the train-track has to climb stepply up in order to be able to let the highest cruiseships pass by under them. Another quite interesting sight of Hochdonn is the small windmill next to the canal, it is mainly used for weddings and other special festivities. In Hochdonn you can also cross the canal by a car-ferry, free of charge like all other ferries crossing the Kielcanal / Nord-Ostsee-Kanal.

Tip Photo
Bosau - am großen Plöner See

by globetrott

Bosau is a tiny village with an interesting church directely at Grosser Ploener See. When you enlarge my photographs you can see the great paintings and wooden decorations of this lovely church, that you can visit freely and without restrictions during the day. Bosau also has some great thatched houses and it is a great place for a day-excursion with the whole family, I may also recommend to take a cruise at the lake !For more informations about this interesting village in the north of Hamburg, click on the web-page below !

Seedorf and a bit of my family's history

by globetrott

Seedorf is a small village in Schleswig Holstein, close to Bad Segeberg. It consists mainly of the manor-house that you will see on my main picture. My mother had told us many stories about this place, when we were kids : She had to serve there during the HJ-time, and she was forced to join the BDM (Bund Deutscher Mädchen), when she was 17 years old. With her austrian passport there was no escape after the "Anschluss" of Austria to the Deutsches Reich in 1938 and beeing in BDM started peacefully with singing, marching, group-activities etc. and it ended with assistance-works, when defending the area during WW II. Seedorf as a romantic place with a lake nearby, the long alleys of trees, the manor-farm and the large woods was one of the stories my mother used to tell us, while we were children and we have been there several times on vacation : The manorhouse offers some appartments for...

Raitenhaslach - a heavenly monastery

by globetrott

Raitenhaslach in Bavaria is a great monastery just a few kilometers south of Burghausen and it might be another great place to visit, when you have some time to explore the south-east of Bavaria !This lovely monastery dates back to the year 1345 and it was rebuilt in baroque style between 1690 and 1696 and a few years later in Rokkoko-style. In 1780 pope Pius VI came to Raitenhaslach and spent the night in the so-called "Praelatenzimmer" that is still one of the most beautiful rooms today. You may visit the ornate church freely and without restrictions during the day. The monastery could also be visited, but I have no idea about the time-schedules. The doors were open, while I was there and I could walk around. This monastery would need a lot of repairs and restorations still, BUT it also looks great already the way it is today.between 1396 and 1502 many members of the Wittelsbacher...
