Tittmoning, where Benedikt XVI spent his childhood

by globetrott

Tittmoning in Bavaria is a small town, where the pope Bededikt XVI spent a few years of his childhood. The village directly at the border between Bavaria and Austria has a great baroque townsquare and an interesting castle and parts of the medieval townwall and the moat ahead of it can also be seen nowadays. You may combine a visit to Tittmoning with Laufen and Oberndorf bei Salzburg (where Silent Night originated) with Burghausen, the largest castle in Germany, with Braunau in Austria or also with a small village called Fúcking, just in case that you love to go to places with funny names !!

Mechanisches Musikkabinett in Ruedesheim

by globetrott

Siegfried's Mechanisches Musikkabinett in Ruedesheim is one of the largest collections of automatic music-instruments and musicboxes in Europe. Go inside, even when you will have not enough time to see the museum, the exhibits shown here on my page are shown in the entrance hall, BEFORE you get to the cashier. You will find Siegfried's Mechanisches Musikkabinett inside of Broemserhof ,a lovely castle with an interesting half-timbered facade, not far away from the famous Drosselgasse.I did not dare to put in some coins, but I may imagine that most of the machines are still working fine that way, and performances of these musicboxes are also part of every guided tour through the museum. The vintage-car, that you will see in my pics belongs to that museum and you will see it driving around Ruedesheim quite often ! The entry fee is 5,50 Euros and 3 Euros for students and children.Im...

Burg Lahneck

by globetrott

Burg Lahneck is a really interesting castle, built high above the place, where the river Lahn flows into the river Rhine. The castle dates back to 1245 and you can visit it with a guided tour only. Tours are daily 10.00a.m. - 05.00 p.m. between easter and end of October.Unfortunately I did not go inside, as for the next tour I would have to have waited 1,5 hours :-((Just a few meters from the castle, you may see a great restaurant with a lovely terrace facing the Rhine-valley and with a great view on castle Kapellen-Stolzenfels, at the other side of the Rhine-valley. There is also a camping-site close to Burg Lahneck.--- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---Lahneck is in the village of Lahnstein, on the right bank of the river Rhine. Lahnstein is about 5km upstream from Koblenz

an interesting church in Muenster-Maifeld

by globetrott

Muenster-Maifeld is a small town that I found accidentally when driving from the Mosel-valley to Burg Eltz. The small town has around 8000 inhabitants and you will find a lot of interesting half-timbered houses and a church that looks a bit strange and very un-usual, also inside ! The church-tower looks more like a fortified castle-tower and the church has many great details inside as well, - see my photographs 3-5 . You may enter the church freely and without restrictions during the day, a large parking is next to it and free of charge !--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---Muenster-Maifeld is on the way from Hatzenport in the Mosel-valley to Eltz castle - about 12 km off the river Mosel.

The main road is running through an old castle

by globetrott

Kobern-Gondorf is a small village in the Mosel-valley not far from Koblenz and it has some great castles to offer : One of them is in my main photograph, it is called " Schloss von der Leyen " , an old castle, and there was no other way to build a road, than to lead it through the innercourt of the old castle. You may get out of your car and take a look around that castle, it has plenty of great details to be seen. Not far from "Schloss an der Leyen" is another castle, Schloss Liebig (the small pic of my picture-combination). Inside Schloss Liebig you will find one of the best and most exclusive restaurants (Tel.+49 (0)2607-966 90) of the Mosel-valley - click on my link below or take a look at my restaurant-tips for more pics and details !!

The Schultheis-Haus in Karden-Treis

by globetrott

Karden-Treis or Treis-Karden is a small village about 25km downstream from Cochem in the Mosel-valley. My favorite building in Karden-Treis is this old building that dates back to the year 1562. At that time it was the seat of the "Schultheis of Kurtrier" Schultheis was an expression for a judge and "Kurtrier" was the old province belonging to the city of Trier. The house is situated next to the trainline and maybe for all the many vibrations every day the foundations of the building sank partly down a bit and you have the feeling the house is falling apart.Karden is situated on the left bank of the river Mosel / Moselle and it has its own train-station and also a bridge across the river to the village of Treis with 2 castle-ruins.see Karden-Treis on the link below !

Kroev & a wine called N@ckt@rsch

by globetrott

Kröv is a tiny village at the left bank of the Mosel-valley and it has some great half-timbered houses, BUT mainly it is well known for a funny name for one of its great wines : Kröver N@ckt@rschThere is a little story about that funny name, explained on the bottle :Once upon a time the children of the village went down into the cellar in order to drink some wine ! They were caught, and their n@cked @ss had to pay for it ....a n@cked @ss is a Nacktarsch in GermanThe word @rsch is really very rude, and you certainly should never, never use it !but when you quote the name of the wine and bring it home as a souvenir, everybody is smiling and having fun also because of the funny label !When driving through Kröv you will see many places, where the vintners have windows, where you can taste the wine and buy the bottles of the famous wine (see my 3rd pic)see Kröv here on the map by...

In Beilstein, in the Mosel-valley you may visit an interesting "Museum of Coffee-mills" inside a cafe with the funny name "Cafe Klapperburg". They are showing 366 different coffee-mills made of wood, iron and brass. The collection even includes a tiny mill made for a doll's-houses. The museum is inside the cafe and you may enjoy also some cake and a coffee there. The museum and cafe is open daily 10.00a.m. till 06.30p.m. You have to step up to the 1st floor (USA:2nd floor!) they are also renting some rooms -take a look at their webpage below !Beilstein is a small village on the right bank of the river Mosel - it is situated about 10km upstream from Cochem !

Automobile Welt Eisenach

by globetrott

Automobile Welt Eisenach is an interesting and rather new museum about the long tradition of the car-production in Eisenach. The first car was built there in 1899, it was the famous Wartburg-Motorenwagen with 5 HP. More pupolar cars that were built in Eisenach : BMW Dixi, the BMW Roadstar 328. After WW II BMW Eisenach had to change its name into EMW and finally Wartburg became the 2nd most popular car in DDR after the more popular Trabbi.I enjoyed that car-museum very much, one of my favorites was a so called camping-edition of a Wartburg, that was even exported to Great Britain ( my last picture)The museum of Automobile Welt Eisenach is open for visitors Tue-Sun : 11.00a.m. - 05.00p.m.entrance-fee is 3 EurosD-99817 Eisenach - Friedrich-Naumann-Straße 10

Festung Koenigstein

by globetrott

Festung Königstein is 29km south of Dresden and you can get there easyly by train or by cruise-ship. Koenigstein is the biggest castle in Europe - with more than 1700 meters of walls surrounding it.The castle was built on the very top of a rather flat mountain above the river Elbe, and it was used as a prison and fortification untill 1922.NO enemy was ever able toget into the castle......BUT in 1848 Sebastian Abratzky was able to climb up one of the steep rocks and get into the castle. His profession was to clean chimneys and so he knew some tricks of climbing. He was set into prison for a few weeks as well...On the castle you may still see plenty of great cannons, like on my picture, you may see the old castle and prison-cells, there are various restaurants and exhibitions about the old times and so you may spend almost the whole day there, when you like to see everything. You may go to...
