Packing for Germany

by Weissdorn

I stress - bring light-weight luggage and bags, and leave half the stuff you want to pack at home. The reason for this is that many will be staying in hotels and guest houses, where they:a) don't have parking near the accomodationb) are not anywhere near the train stationc) do not have elevators, even though they have multiple stories.Murphy's law says that your hotel is going to be located the farthest point away from the train station, on the top floor, on the most swealtering day, and you're exhausted on that day. Comfortable clothing is best for travel. Bring a few changes for hot and cold weather. It rains a lot in Germany, so bring appropriate rain gear. Germany is located in a temperature zone, so you should always bring a coat - even in summer. Bring at least 2 pair of comfortable walking shoes, to change, so that you won't get blisters from walking. Ladies, leave your high-heels...

Marling Menu Master for Great German Food

by davequ

Rain gear Lens filters for overcast and foggy/humid haze. Marling Menu Master: Have you ever seen a real German menu with no English? Yikes. To avoid being stuck in tourist restaurants with menus in English, take a Marling menumaster with you to decode German menus and open up the world of great German cuisine. I never leave for Europe without one in German, French, and Italian. Get 'em at Amazon and lots of other online travel stores.

Warm clothing

by lmforrister

The weather in Germany was extremely cold when i visited in December. I didnt expect it to be as cold as it was which is why i suggest you take very warm clothing including a warm hat, scarf and gloves. Remember to take your E111 form with you if you are from Europe Take a camera to take pictures of the Dom Cathedral and the markets. Possibly a camcorder as well

To be honest, the German weather is just terrible! :-) lol One never knows for sure what the weather will be like. It can be hot and sunny and on the next day it can already be cool, cloudy and rainy again, like most of the time.In summer, temperatures do usually never reach more than 30-35°C. Besides t-shirts and shorts you should also take trousers and pullovers with you, 'cause as I just mentioned, one never knows what the weather will be like the next day. In spring and fall, temperatures are about 15-20°C. It rains quite often, especially in fall and it can also be a bit stormy. In winter, temperatures can reach -10°C, it depends on where in Germany you are; we don't get much snow though. Nevertheless, you should take warm clothes with you! Don't worry, we have lots of 'photo-shops' here in Germany and the equipment is even cheaper than, for example, in the United...

an UMBRELLA. self explanatory. If you plan for staying in Germany especially long (like, more than 4 days) you might invest in a solar light bulb. these have certain rays that help simulate sunlight, so that when July--oops, I mean winter rather--hits, you will be able to chemically be happy by pretending that you have been frolicking in sunlight instead of hiding away in your apartment because of all the rain. seasonal affective disorder is a very REAL and DANGEROUS affliction and must be treated as soon as possible! sunglasses are not needed for obvious reasons, but people seem to wear them anyway make sure to get film that compensates for the pitch black noon skies!

Whatever you decide to bring...don't forget warm clothing and a good umbrella even if its middle of August. Germany has 290 days of rainfall. Gosh...I miss the rain. Can you believe I live in Phoenix now? 340 days of Sun...a nightmare! Definetely buy perfumes in Germany for French merchandize is really cheap over there. The standard Photo-Film that we all use is Kodak and Fuji and its rare to find anything below 36 images per container. Also its really cheap to buy film there but development is realy expensive so safe the film for develpent after you arriwe at home.

Even in the summer there are a lot of rainfalls. 10 years ago it didn't rain in July - but that changed.Nowadays its sometimes so cold you have to wear a jacket. So be prepared! Everything available in shops and pharmacies.
