I cannot tell you for sure, because I have never been to Italy, but many people claim that the Pizzas in Germany are actually better than in Italy. There is hardly a town in Germany were you cannot eat Italian, or at least a Pizza. Characteristically, all types of pizza you can buy in Germany all claim to be "original Mamamia recipes straight from Italy", including the pan pizza deep dish ones from Pizza Hut. Truth is, the small pizzerias or family-run restaurants all have tasty pizza, usually from a wood-fired oven. They usually back the pizza on thin crusts, and you can order almost what you want on your pizza, including pickeled squid, shrip, spinach + garlic, caviare, and one called Calazone that has a baked egg in the middle of it, and is folded in half.
In any good German-Italian Pizzeria you can eat in the restaurant or order to go. It's one of the few restaurants that have delivery service. I good large pizza will cost you only 3-10 € depending on the town and the ingredients.

Not only the Italians bake Pizza - the Germans will too, and it tastes just the same, if they use the same methods and tools. My friend Romona from Saxony makes a good one with pickeled artichoke hearts, and marinated red bell pepper slices.

To find really good German restaurants, you have to get out of the city into the country. Sometimes even the subburbs. This is where you can find German restaurants with one or two Michelin stars. I suppose I will have to make a traveloge on typical dishes.
Common in German restaurants is that:

Although they do take reservations, there is no waiting in a lounge or bar.

The restaurant menu must appear by law outside the restaurant, so that guests can decide if they would like to go in or not.

You usually do not get the table for yourselves if room is still available and it's crowded. In this case, if you spy two chairs available in a restaurant you can ask, "Ist hier noch frei?" and if they nod, you can sit down next to the people already seated at a table.

Waiters / waitresses do not interrupt your meal with questions, like "Is everything all right?" They assume that if you want them you will call them.

The waiter/waitress will ask you what you would like to drink before you order. Germans always order at least twice.

If you want water, you have to order it, and it costs extra. If you order water they will almost always bring you soda, unless you ask for "Wasser ohne Gas".

The tip and taxes are included by law in the menu prices, but it is customary to round the price up, e.g. if the price was 37,50 € then most people say 40 €. You are not obligated to tip, and these days many Germans don't tip anymore out of protest - the gastronomy prices have increased 110% since Germany switched over to the Euro.

There is no such thing as a non-smoking section in the restaurant.

You cannot pay for meals with your credit card in most restaurants, so visit the ATM before you go.

You can eat at the bar if you like.

Often there is no children's menu, but most restaurants will accommodate a child's portion.

If you have preferences, voice them definately when placing your order, e.g. "do not cook my food in Butter", or "I have a plane to catch in two hours", etc. If they do it anyway, and you ask them to correct this, and they still don't do it right, you do not have to pay for the meal if you do not eat it, in this case.

My favorite dishes to order in German Restaurants:

    Ochsenbrust mit Meerrettichsoße
    Oxen Breast in Horseradish Sauce
    Wildschweinbraten mit Blaukraut und Preiselbeersoßen
Wild Boar with Red Cabbage and Cranberry Sauce
Grüne Soße mit Eier und Kartoffeln
Herbal Green Sauce with quartered Eggs and boiled potatoes
    Rheinischer Sauerbraten mit Semmelknödel
Marinated Wine Roast à la Rhine with Stuffing
    Rhöner Hasenbraten mit Kartoffeln-Äpfel
Roast Hare à la Rhön with baked potatoes and apples
    Rindsrouladen mit Kartoffelpuree
Stuffed Filet Rolls with mash potatoes
    Kalbsleber mit Salbei-Wein-Soße
Sauteed calve's liver with sage wine sauce

    one nutella crepe coming up!!!
    by Audrey118
I have never seen Nutella in such a big way in any part of the world - but here in Germany. I suppose it would be big in Italy but I did not see so many nutella fans there.

My first encounter was in Kiel when I saw real huge bottles of Nutella. They are really small in my country, Malaysia. I buy them to eat with bread and sometimes add them to baking with muffins. But in Frankfurt I stumbled in this Nutellaria - awesome. You have quite many to choose. Some people have this pancake or lebanese bread warmed and then spread THICKLY with nutella. I had this crepe which was made in to roll, and my husband and I shared it - it was huge for us. Inside the pancake was lots of nutella, and lots of diced fruits - strawberries, kiwi, pineapple etc. yummy TO drown tha awesome stuff I had capuccino nutella!!!!

Any Restaurant Mostly: What You Eat, How Much and Where

Hanging out at a local cafe
    by grishaV1
Most of the restaurants I went to you find yourself a seat. Just to wait for someone to tell you "sit over here" is usually to know you are not local persons. At the table if there is room enough you might share it with some other peoples. Wherever you can find enough seats for who your with, its ok to sit there.

Don't be in a terrible hurry most places, the waitress or waiter comes sometime when they notice you. If you go only for a beer, you order, you drink. You don't get asked again and again if you want more, you can ask for it yourself or catch the waiters eye or raise a hand. You don't get pushed to leave if you want to drink slowly and talk either.

Also some places I saw the portion are moderate, not like in America you get HUGE plates full of stuff that you don't need to eat all of it. You can share such with 3 friends here, have a few beers and be ok the rest of the night :-) When you go to the tables of full restaurant, not a bar or cafe, if there is bread and butter given to you this is extra cost remember. If you are really hungry then eat but make sure you have the euros to pay for this too.

In summer and any warmer times and some cold even! you will find people often chose to sit outside at cafes and restaurants instead of being indoors. We also are very much that way, to be seen and see those passing by and enjoy nature at the same time. As soon as a bud blossoms on the tree or bush or stalk you will see even small restaurants pull out a bench with a table before their doors.

You will see many many Turkish places where you can get kebaps or whatever, I think these are almost more common in the larger cities of Germany than traditional German food places! In Berlin its rather difficult to see German places along main places, instead you see Chinese or fast food or the like. In smaller neighborhoods you can generally find at least a few good German places.

    The Patio at the
    Bratwursthäusle
    by Paul2001
Bratwursthäusle is the most famous bratwurst haus in Nuremberg. I had one of my the most memorable meals in Germany here. Needless to say the speciality of the house is bratwurst, a food that Germany and Nuremberg is famous for. In fact the Bratwursthäusle is suppose to be the number one spot to try these sausage like food.
Surprisingly the food here is not that expensive especially considering its location and popularity with tourists. It was so crowded that I had no choice but to sit in the patio. They also serve very large portions.

Of course I had bratwurst but I also enjoyed the potato salad and dumblings. To this day they are the best sausages that I have ever eaten!

    by joolssss
This hotel is beautiful loking over Lake Mummelsee ( you can go boating on it also)
Its a very very plush hotel and does the best Back forest Gateau in the black forest! It has a huge car park and a few souvenir stalls outside. Its right in the heart of the Black forest, you cannot go without visiting here and sampling the cake!

Black Forest Gateau is divine, quite alcoholic but divine. Its reknowned for being the best Black Forest gateau in the forest, How can you not go and try it? Its even better washed down with some icy cold schnapps!
It may be worth getting the kids a bowl of ice cream though due to the alcohol taste, kids dont like it much!

I enjoyed having a fried sausage (bockwurst)served in the open air cafes. They seemed so delicious! Besides, they also offered a roasted chicken... Great!
