Portofino: Cozy little Italian restaurant

by zepdude

We dined here on two occasions and both meals were delicious. The room is small and you might have to wait, but it is worth it for two reasons: the food is good, and there is not much else in town. Try the Spaghetti Alla Marinara (in Marinara sauce with seafood) for 6,20 Euros, or, the Lasagna Della Casa al Forno for 6,20 Euros

Rasthaus im Spessart: Rasthaus im Spessart, Rohrbrunn

I like German restaurants when traveling they have one of the best services for food and always good service as well like clean toilets and showers. On the last trip home from Lviv to Holland i was very happy to see the first oneHad some yammy cappucino and food.On the way from Utrecht-to Budapest by Eurolines Bus i took some pictures of some of these roadrestaurants its not only a restaurant but also a motel, but since we didnt stay overnight i can say nothing about the motel. Enough parkinspace here.

The Hofbrauhaus: Munich's Most Famous Beerhall

by Paul2001

The Hofbrauhaus serves traditional German cuisine which means great big hunks of meat with dumplings. There is almost constant entertainment going on with Bavarian ompah bands banging away attempting, and usually succeeding in getting everyone to sing along. The atmosphere is so corny that it actually is close to being a tourist trap but all in all one cannot help but be ultimately charmed by the place.

From cake to pastry through Germany :)

by Trekki

Most probably, Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte is the best known cake from Germany. But the variety is much bigger and also varying from region to region. In addition to Kuchen (cake), the general term, we also have delicious Torten (Torte being the singular term), which are made of several layers of flat cake, filled with cream or marmalade. One of the many typical delicious cakes from middle Germany is Frankfurter Kranz, baked in the typical ring shaped dish with butter cream and red marmalade inside and covered with ground nuts. A cake, similar in shape is Marmorkuchen (marble cake). Other famous German cakes are: Bienenstich (no useful translation), Käsekuchen (cheesecake) and Stollen. The latter is mostly sold during Christmas time and is a speciality from Saxony. Another result of our sweets obsession is the variety in very delicious pastries. At this point in time I only mention one,...

Roulade and red cabbage, famous dish

by Trekki

This is another famous dish you will find in many traditional German restaurants, especially in the south (= anything south of Frankfurt). Sometimes it is translated as “beef olive”, which I find funny since I have no idea where this term comes from. It shall be prepared with beef (= Rind, so it can be called Rinderoulade on the menu), but if you are in doubt, ask the waiter. Sometimes it is prepared with veal (Kalb => Kalbsroulade). The thin sliced meat is covered with several ingredients, usually these are sliced cucumbers, bacon and onion and spiced with pepper and mustard. Then it is rolled, fixed and stewed in a pan until the meat is soft enough.Traditionally it is being served with red cabbage (called Rotkraut or Rotkohl, depending where in Germany you order it) and a dark gravy.Another dish which is called “Roulade” is Kohl-Roulade. This one is with white cabbage and a filling...

Currywurst - curry sausage, famous snack

by Trekki

Good old Currywurst, curry sausage. There is a huge dispute between the city of Berlin and the Ruhr region about where it was invented. But that is completely irrelevant when it comes to eating it. It is cult. Nothing for vegetarians of course. And not halal either since it is mostly prepared with pork meat, with the result of Bratwurst. The Currywurst is cut into pieces and served with a sauce of usually ketchup with curry. Often it is only ketchup and curry powder. And it comes with a bread roll. You will find these at kiosks, at train stations and at these Schnellimbiss booths or vans at popular places. It is good! The one in my photo is from the little kiosk at the Rhein ferry to Nierstein/Oppenheim (north of Worms). It came with a marvellous sunset while we had it on a sunny afternoon.Prices vary, but are usually in between 2 and 5 €.This Currywurst is so famous that German singer...

Federweißer and Zwiebelkuchen – autumn dream

by Trekki

A very popular dish almost everywhere in southern Germany during autumn is Zwiebelkuchen (onion cake). It is usually served together with “new wine”. Or in other words: it is the one and only dish you should eat together with the new wine. This new wine has nothing to do with the French Beaujolais Primeur, which is real wine, finished in fermentation. Neuer Wein is more of a still fermenting grape must, rather sweet and available as sparkling or non-sparkling, but it contains alcohol. Depending on the grape, you can have Federweisser (white grapes) or Federroter (red grapes). The ones in my photos look quite different, but this has to do with the fermenting stage. The ones in the first two photos are higher concentrated and the fermentation has progressed more. We had these at the lovely terrace of Rheinstein Castle, on a beautiful sunny autumn day – highly recommendable to sample these...

Icecream anyone ?

by Trekki

Of course you can go to an ice cream parlour, when you crave for ice cream. But here in Germany we are lucky to have ice cream “stations” on wheels. These are simply vans equipped with a mini parlour in the back. Flavours are of course limited to mostly 10, but nowadays they also offer different mixtures with chocolate syrup or nuts as well, like in the parlours. Prices per ball is the same as in any other ice cream parlour (0,80 € as of summer 2010).They are usually near parks and recreation areas or just driving through neighbourhoods. You can hear them approaching when they ring a bell and shout “Eis” (= ice cream).© Ingrid D., April 2007 (text revamp Dec. 2010)

Apfelsaft-Schorle – the very best in summer

by Trekki

In summer one of the best drinks to quench thirst (apart from beer, but this is Richie’s task, haha) is Apfelsaft-Schorle. Actually there is no proper translation for it and even Wikipedia translates it as Schorle in the English sectionThe best drink though is Bionade, a magic liquid, but not every restaurant or café might have it on the menu.Schorle is the term widely used in Germany for what US Americans might know as Spritzer. We also use the term Gespritzter, however it might be better to remember the term Schorle. It is usually a 1:1 mixture of “something” with mineral water. The “something” can be wine, red or white, (= Weinschorle) or juice. If it is juice, the most popular is apple juice = Apfelsaftschorle. But when I met Mark, Sarah and baby Ryan in Bacharach this year, I learned to my utmost delight that restaurants in wine regions also serve grape juice schorle. If you don’t...

Don’t miss our mushroom season !!

by Trekki

Usually, in late summer and early autumn, we have mushroom dishes in most of the restaurants. Mushrooms vary from all kinds of champignons, boleti, chantarelle and others. Mostly they are served with creamy sauce and bread dumplings, so they are very much filling! The best mushroom meal I had so far was once in Eltville (my suggestion as alternative to tourist trap Rüdesheim), in a tiny restaurant (first photo). The second best was in St. Martin, a cute small so typical Palatinate village. Depending on the meal and of course the restaurant, prices vary from 5 Euro to 10 and more Euro. But be warned: many restaurants, especially where the owners want quick money rather than customer satisfaction, would serve canned mushrooms. I would say that a good sign for fresh mushrooms is when the dishes are indeed announced on a special board outside of the restaurant.I should also mention the German...
