Hopfengarten: Great food, nice beergarden

by elbe

Nice ambience. You can choose between rustic beer pub and more modern restaurant. The dishes also are different depending on the place. In the pub you find more rustic regional, cheaper food, in the restaurant dishes with a modern touch, inspired from regional, asian and mediterranian kitchen. But at both places the food is good. You can also get the beer from the local Fiege brewery there. The restaurant and also the pub are nice made, you feel yourself good there. Sometimes the service isn't that fast but always friendly. In summer you can sit outside in the nice beergarden. The tram and bus stations are in front of the restaurant. Last time I had grilled Manchego cheese with ham, rucola and sesame honey: wonderful. But don't expect huge portions in the restaurant! They are also not that cheap but were always great tasting. In the pub the portions are a bit bigger, a bit cheaper but...

Konditorei Gehri: Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte in Hinterzarten

by globetrott

Freiburg and the nearby Schwarzwald / Black Forest is certainly the best place to taste the real Schwarzwaelder Kirsch-Torte ! My favorite place to do so is in Konditorei Gehri in Hinterzarten ! Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte is made of several layers of chocolate-cake, filled with whipped cream that has cherries in it. Depending on the recipee - there are 7 different official recepees - these cherries might be soacked in cherry-brandy, or the cake-layers might be soaked by cherrybrandy, or both of them. In any case the name indicates that Kirsch-Schnaps (cherry-brandy) is used for the cake, if it would be just a Cherry-cake, it would be called Schwarzwaelder KirschEN-Torte.Schwarzwaelder Kirschtorte is quite heavy and full of calories and mostly it is also much higher than an ordinary cake would be.

Zur Herta: a ship-restaurant in Museumshafen Kiel

by globetrott

Zur Herta is my favorite restaurant in Kiel and so for many reasons : first of all it is the lovely old, traditional wooden ship with a great and interesting interior and out on deck you will find some tables as well with a view of the other interesting sailingships that are docked in that part of the Museumshafen Kiel.b.t.w The Motto of this place is "Wer bei uns Fisch isst, braucht kein Viagra" (When you eat fish here, you won't need Viagra);-) "Hausmacher Fischsuppe" is a local fish-soup with bell-peppers, salmon, makarels, smoked dogfish and some more. A small dish is 3,50 and a full pot as a maincourse is 6,90 euros - see the soup on my 2nd photograph. It was a good idea to taste that soup but I was glad I took the smaller pot and another fish-course afterwards.

Eisenbahn-Wunderland cafeteria: the best and cheapest Rote Gruetze

by globetrott

The Eisenbahn-Wunderland in Hamburg has a really great and even very cheap cafeteria !I have been to many museums and theme-parks, where the owners try to make a lot of extra-money by restaurants, toilets etc. simply because they know that their guests have no other chance than to accept high prices....In Eisenbahn-Wunderland everything is cheap and tasty !!This restaurant is INside the Eisenbahn-Wunderland, so you need a ticket to go there !! I spent the whole afternoon in Modellbahn-Wunderland and really enjoyed their food a lot :I had a fish-fillet with potatoe-salad and a large coke and payed just 4,50 eurosfor desert I had "Rote Gruetze" - a giant portion in a full soup-plate + extra-vanilla-sauce for just 1,30 euros. (b.t.w. in the Rathaus-restaurant you pay 6,50 euros for Rote Gruetze)Rote Gruetzte is a kind of fruit-stew consisting of Rhubarb, strawberries, rasberries,...

Restaurant Marais / Schloss Liebig: the finest restaurant in the Mosel-valley

by globetrott

Restaurant Marais in Schloss Liebig is a great restaurant in a distance of about 10km from Koblenz on the left bank of the river Mosel.Schloß Liebig is a castle dating back to the year 1158 and it was in private posession untill 1972. Then it was unused for some years, before it was transfered into a great speciality-restaurant. This is one of the best and most romantic places to have dinner along the river Mosel. Prices, atmosphere and also the quality is above the average. The restaurant is open Wednesday-Sundays after 06.00p.m.Sundays already open from 12.00 noonAlways closed on monday & tuesdaythe restaurant will be open also for groups of more than 10-12 persons at any time upon reservation !

In Rüdesheim: taste Ruedesheimer Kaffee

by globetrott

Ruedesheimer Kaffee is a bit similar to Irish Coffee but instead of Whiskey they are using "Asbach Uralt", a local brandy that is produced like Cognac in real wooden vats.It was pretty cold that day in Ruedesheim, as you may see on my pics, with a steady breeze, lots of clouds and just a bit of sunshine. Therefore my mother needed 2 Ruedesheimer Kaffee, while I took my pics. When driving, this kind of coffee is not advisable, even when most of the alcohol will be burned. Ruedesheimer Kaffee is served inside this lovely cup as follows:The waiter will bring the cup, a small 2cl-bottle of "Asbach Uralt" and will pour the brandy into the cup at the table. Then the brandy will be set on fire by long matches. That way most of the alcohol will disappear and a certain flavor will be added by the burning. Then the coffee and some sugar will be added and finally topped by whipped cream and some...

Klausenhof in Hanstein: oldfashioned and romantic

by globetrott

Klausenhof in Hanstein is my favorite restaurant in germany because of its unique interior that seems like dating back to medieval times. I found it accidentally and was surprised by the excellent food served in an old-fashioned ambiente at its best !In Klausenhof there is the ordinary restaurant and garden-restaurant, where all tourists are welcome and there are also several side-rooms and large halls, where food will be served for larger parties upon arrangement and reservation : see my 2nd picture !The servants will wear traditional costumes and when you are able to understand german, take a look at their web-page, written in the funny old-german spelling !And they have some rooms to rent for larger groups like wedding-parties etc. - see also my accomodation-tips ! I had pork medaillions and a special desert : a blueberry-parfait,see it in my last photograph !

Kehlsteinhaus / "Eagle's nest": a place with unfamous history

by globetrott

Kehlsteinhaus / "Eagle's nest" is a nice restaurant today, 1834 meters above sea-level. It has a terrace offering an excellent view and inside the historical building there are various rooms and halls, see my extra pics ! Sometimes it is called "Hitler's Tea-house", BUT in fact that teahouse used to be somewhere else and does not exist anymore nowadays. Some of the rooms inside of Kehlsteinhaus are still decorated with the original chandeliers, mantle-piece etc. of the 1930s - this house was a present by the NSDAP to Hitler for his 50th birthday. This restaurant is open ONLY in summertime !From Nov. 1st till beginning or mid of Mayit will be closed and will be opened again according to the weather-situation! Kehlsteinhaus is a perfect place for small snacks and genuine bavarian kitchen at reasonable prices.
