Das Labyrinth: Aachener Mediterranean

by Sjalen

The whole place is nice (and bigger than it first looks, hence the name). A mix between students and older locals. Very nice veggie fare on offer and not expensive either. Great outside terrace for sunny days. Several of the vegetarian on offer. All with a Mediterranean touch such as grilled aubergines in garlic sauce and with homemade bread.

Sauerkraut Country

by nepalgoods

‘Most foreigners,’ reads the 1969 guide ‘Die Küche in Deutschland’, ‘imagine German cuisine to be an infinite series of sausages and sauerkraut.' This opinion was apparently shared by Germany’s poets and thinkers, experts in analysing the likes and tastes of the German population, as proven by the existence of several hymns to the Germans’ favourite food. ‘Metzelsuppenlied’ by poet Ludwig Uhland (1787-1862), for instance, intones ‘Auch unser edles Sauerkraut, wir sollen’s nicht vergessen; / Ein Deutscher hat’s zuerst gebaut, / Drum ist’s ein deutsches Essen. (Our fine sauerkraut, too - and let’s not forget it - was created by a German, which makes it German food.)This ‘fine’ German sauerkraut or more precisely, its enchanting smell, also inspired Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) in his Parisian exile, to write: ‘Der Tisch war gedeckt, / hier fand ich ganz die altgermanische Küche. / Sei mir...

Assorted carts within the festivities: fingerlicking good at Oktoberfest

by lonelymountianbiker

When you're given a whole chicken at Oktoberfest you'll notice that your server doesn't concern themselves with giving you any cutlery!!! That's just fine because the locals use the chicken as a family meal affair. Parents will hold the chicken while children get to rip off large chunks and make a general mess of things. So take this opportunity to throw out anything resembling manners and gorge yourself with this hands on affair.

German Food: German Food

by antistar

Since moving to Germany I've eaten more Italian food than ever before. That should tell you something about what I think of German food. Germans like to look down on other nations, particularly Britain, in regards to their food, but it is not much to write home about here either. It's your typical northern European fare: hefty dishes of meat and vegetables designed to combat the cold climate. The main problem with German food is it lacks subtlety. German food is like Indian art: heavy handed and overdone. The meals have too much salt, the drinks too much acid, and the desserts too much sugar. On top of that everything seems to be pork based, and of course the Germans love their sausages. The worse offender for pork fixation is Bavaria. Here non-pork dishes are almost unheard of, and everything gets infected by it. Even the Italian restaurants put it into their bolognese sauce, to the...

Der Wolpertinger: Traditional German Cuisine!

by wendy_austin

This restuarant is named after a mythical creature similar to the American jackalope, only scarier. The theme of the restaurant is traditional wood, so one table is a giant wooden bed, another is like a wagon. You get the idea. If you need pepper, don't hesitate to ask. The waiter will bring out the 4 foot long pepper grinder and oblige you. Everything on the menu is delicious, and makes you keep coming back for more. You can also buy certain items like almond cookies by the bag. This restaurant is part of the hotel, so you can eat until you cry and then stumble to your room! It is also located in the corn markt, so you have access to the entire walkstrasse from there. I encourage walking around this historical area and checking out the cannonball stuck in a wall on the bridge. I can't remember the name, but it is the largest meal on the menu and it says in English "Please be very...

various: German wine

by Sjalen

When mentioning Germany, people think of beer, but Germany is in fact also wine - and lots of good ones :) The internationally most famous wine growing region is perhaps the Moselle, but lots of Germans know that there are equally good regions all over mid- and southern Germany. The Moselle (Saar-Ruwer), The Rheinhessen area, sunny Baden and even the province of Saxony are only some of the regions. The interesting thing with German wines is that, contrary to for instance Australian and Californian wines the Germans depend a lot on the completely different soil types found in the volcanic slate-type soil often found here. Thus, a wine can differ very much from another just a few villages apart, even if it is the same grape. The white Riesling is of course the most famous of them with 20% of the land used, and comes in lots of varieties. But German reds are not to be dismissed as I found...
