What you should know

by kldelaney

German restaurants are very relaxed. Once you sit down the table is yours for the evening , if you so choose. They don't rush you in, they don't rush the food, and they certainly don't rush you out the door.BE PREPARED.......to ask for the check. They won't offer it.Tipping is practically frowned on here. They include it with the cost of your meal, like tax. Several German people we have talked to about this have said that because Americans tip so much and so often that they worry it will become expected. The Germans, if they leave anything, will leave a token tip. Just enough to say thank you and not enough to be excited about.DOGS: My favorite subject. It is rude to just walk straight in with a dog. You should enter and ask the first person you see (who works there), "Is the dog allowed?" More times than not its a very enthusiastic "yes" but sometimes they say no. This is a common...

The Louissianna: Good American food prepared the German way!

by lieser85

The restaurant is on the main street where everyone likes to go and drink in Dusseldorf. I like it there because there are always ALOT of people and my friends and I get our food or drinks and just people watch for hours. They also have people performing for money but it provides live music and good entertainment alot of the time. I love their fresh salads with chickens on a skewer. They have corn, lima beans, tomatoes, cheese.

various: Kaffee und Kuchen

by Sjalen

The Germans love their cakes and you should definately try to have coffee and cakes somewhere during your visit. A lot of it revolves around sour fruit like cherries and such (Black Forest gateau of course being the most famous), and often including German sour cream in one way or another which gives it all a fresh rather than over sweetened flavour. This cake table is from a wedding so don't expect them all at once but this is what cakes could look like. Käsekuche

Hotel Zum Goldenen Löwen: great place to stop along the Rhine

by b1bob

For those from Roxboro, this is the Golden Lion Hotel. On my first trip to Europe, my group only stopped here for a snack after our Rhine River Cruise. I opted for the black forest cake at this hotel's restaurant. I believe this was my first go of this dessert, and certainly my first time with it in Germany. Besides the cake, I took note of the old-world style and charm of this small hotel along the Rhine.

Das Baumeisterhaus: Das Baumeisterhaus

by b1bob

Das Baumesterhaus was a restaurant right in the old town Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The bunch of us in the photo (anticlockwise) Laurie Burton, Kim Leake, Carolyn Martin, Renee Atwood, and myself were impressed by the courtyard of this restaurant. It looked really authentic and the food was great. I had the sampler plate which consisted of bratwurst, knockwurst and red sauerkraut.

Eisgrub - Brau: Best brewery in Mainz

by rubbersoul75

Great beer, great food, great prices. This is our favorite spot in Mainz for a nice casual meal and drinks. It's a polular spot and does get crowded on the weekends, make reservations if you are a large party. Within the keller/restaurant you'll see a few large vats producing the beer that you are drinking. Besides the typical mugs, they offer a meter of beer (a meter tall tube with a small tap so you can refill as needed), platter of beer (5 small beers to sample the 3 types that they offer).Food is regular german fare, good portions and a good price. As of 2005, they had a great lunch buffet for 5-6 Euros.the tourist info will show you where it is on the map, so be sure to ask when you stop by.

Hoffbrauhaus: Hoffbrauhaus: Huge beer garden

by globally79

Sure, it's touristy and crowded, but a visit to Munich just wouldn't feel complete without it. The food is the standard German/Bavarian fare of sausages and potatoes, and the atmosphere is noisy and friendly. The beer, of course, is cheap and tasty, and served in huge big steins. It's self-seating, like most German restaurants, so just walk in and sit down where you like. It's usually pretty crowded, so you may have to wander around for a while to find a place, especially if you are a large group. Also, be prepared to be patient, as your server will have dozens or hundered of other people to wait on. So relax, and get to know your neighbors.

Street food

by mayafly

One of my favorite things to do in any country (even though I know it's often hazardous to your intestines) is to try food from street vendors. In Germany, the classic street food is, of course, Wurst (sausage). I was recently watching the Olympics in Torino and saw that one of Germany's Luge team members, Georg Hackl, is nicknamed the "Flying White Sausage." White sausage, I thought? Gross. Then I realized that "white sausage," is "Weisswurst," one of the many tasty varieties of German sausage. As usual, it sounds better in the original. But my favorite has to be Currywurst, where they sprinkle on some curry powder and then douse it in ketchup. Okay, I guess you have to try it to believe me. If you're vegetarian, Turkish places have some great veggie options to go. (Many are convenient to eat on the street since they're all wrapped up.) There's falafel, of course, but one of my...

Reinhard's: Twenties in Berlin

by artevelde

Reinhard's lies in the middle of the Nikolaïviertel, one of the oldest and best kept quarters close to the Spree river. With some imagination the inside it looks like a black/white movie from the 20's. The food is refined traditional and the waiters and waitresses have a classy pre WW2 style.

Near the Dusseldorf train stop: Authentic German cuisine

by Phildagr8

If you don't read German, ask if they have a menu in English. The food was fresh, great tasting and worth the price. The setting / surroundings were as true to the culture as you can get.Ask if you can get some alt, too! Schumacher Alt was very good. The sausage was great! You'll be spoiled when you come back to the states!!
