  • Typical German Country Restaurant - Rhön
    Typical German Country
    Restaurant
    by Weissdorn
I tried this restaurant, when we invited my Mother-in-law out to have a Mother's Day dinner - reservations only, of course.
This restaurant, like Gasthof Zur Krone, is in the list of Restaurants entitled "Rhöner Charme" or 5 star dinners for 2 star prices.
The personnel in this restaurant is typically old-fashioned German. The waitresses are friends or relatives of the restaurant owners, and usually were German country clothes. They are friendly and word-carg. The view from the backroom has this great panorama picture of the valley below.

I recommend skipping supper the day before and breakfast on the day you get there, because the servings are large (typical country). Their specialty is game, beef and pork - I recommend the wild boar roast with stuffing dumplings and steamed sweet red cabbage. If this is the last meal you will eat on earth, you came to the right place!
If your a vegetarian, try their salads - a great variety of fresh and pickeled vegetables with a choice of dressing.

Gasthof zur Krone: Eating like the Locals

  • Warm Atmosphere in Gasthof zur Krone - Rhön
    Warm Atmosphere in Gasthof zur
    Krone
    by Weissdorn
In Tann/Rhoen, one of the more popular restaurants is the Gasthof zur Krone. The locals all call it 'beim Mihm' because it belongs to the leading butcher, Nobert Mihm. His butchershop is right next to the restaurant. The restaurant also has hotel rooms available, too. Gasthof zur Krone enjoys excellent quality, because Norbert Mihm still supervises the meat production personally. The meat he sells and serves is very well praised because it's all local and the livestock was raised according to finest biological standards. The livestock is not fed chemicals, drugs and other additives, and thus you can taste the quality. Mr. Mihm has won a number of prizes for superior sausage and meat production for the region and state.
Gasthof zur Krone is very popular with the natives as well as German tourists because of the relaxed German Country atmosphere. The restaurant is decorated in a typical regional fashion, and even has a traditional German Kachelofen - tiled oven for adding a warmth on those cold windy Rhoener days.

Veal or pork medallions is one of Krone's specialities. The butcher's special cold plate is also very good and very popular. One of the house specialities is Rhoen Trout, which comes fresh, just 1000 yards away from Alfred Daenner's Trout Ponds. Mr. Mihm also has a number of choice Frankish wines from Franconia (Upper Bavaria), and occassionally Kreuzberg Beer.

Kreuzberg Monastery: The Monks Brew the Strongest Beer in Germany

    Germany is

The Kreuzberg Monastery Brewery is also in the Rhön, but naturally in the Bavarian part of the Rhön, on the 928 m high Kreuzberg (Cross Mountain).

Atop this mountain you have a very good view of the Rhön and of Franconia (Upper Bavaria), and of the Thurgia Forest, and of the Spessart Mountains.

This monastery was built from 1681 - 1692 by the Fransican Monks, and is still a pilgrimage chapel today.
Since this period, the Kreuzberg monastery is a popular pilgrim church, and for the past 100 years it has become a favorite day-trip spot for people on vacation and hikers, not the least because of the beer, which is reported to the be the strongest beer in Germany (this reason is one of the reasons why you cannot buy it in stores).

Ooops! Forgot to designate the driver? No problem. You can stay overnight in the Monastery (even if you are female). They have hotel rooms there.

The rich, dark beer, Kreuzberger Klosterbräu, is one of the main reasons why this place is so popular, served fresh and cool and freshly drawn, in Bavarian-sized glasses (0.5/1.0 liters). This beer is only brewed here and no where else in Germany. The menu varies, but mostly they have fresh cheese and sausge slices, that were made and prepared by the monks.

Located on the southeast side of the Kreuzberg in the forest, the Neustadter Haus is overshadowed by the well-known monastery on top of the mountain. The food is typical German, and the prices are average for the area. If you are hiking in the area, the Neustadter Haus is a better alternative to eating at the monastery. The monastery is usually crowded, the food is not the greatest. My recommendation would be to park at Neustadter Haus(parking is free, unlike the monastery), hike up to the monastery, and then on hike back down eat at Neustadter Haus.

Jagdschloss Holzberg: Hunter's Castle in the High Rhön

The Jagdschloss is a restaurant and hotel located in the Bavarian Rhön. The main courses served here are hunted daily in a local game preserve, ensuring fresh, local meat. The secluded location of the castle and the fact that there are no electric lights in the dining room make for a nice, relaxing experience. Because of it's location near several hiking trails, the restaurant is open all day, although on off-hours they mainly serve bread and wurst. The evening meals can be a bit expensive, but the day meals for the hikers average about 4 euro in price.

Just about everything on the menu is good, the hard part is choosing! For two people who can't decide, the "grillplatte" is a good choice. It's the chef's selection of meats and vegetables, it will easily fill two people up. For those not driving, a local schnapps called a "Rhön Diesel." The Rhön Diesel is made by the goblins living under the nearby Teufelsmühle waterfall, and nobody else knows the recipe. The entire staff of the Holzberg swear to the story, and pushing them won't bring a different answer.
