(7) Jungle and old oil mill - for families

… vegetable oil to be precise J. Ottweiler, in district of Neunkirchen, is a lovely town, well worth a visit. Just read what Christine(j) wrote about it. It is the only town in Germany that got the right to call itself Rose District.East of Ottweiler is a huge area of commercial woodlands (? term?) with lovely hikes along creeks, tucked in the woods. Ideal for families, as there is a so-called Sinnespfad (path to stimulate all the senses) with an “insect hotel” and a wood xylophone. This easy hike of 11 km should best be started and ended at the vegetable oil mill of Wern in Fürth.The path is marked with a blue “3” on white ground, as part of a circle hike around Ottweiler.Coordinates of Fürth on GoogleEarth:49°25’01,77’’N; 07°14’06,16’’E (= oil mill)

(3) Virgin forest - just outside Saarbrücken

Just north of Saarland’s capital Saarbrücken is something unique to Europe (at least this is what the books say): a forest, “preserved get back to nature”. No forest activity is done here anymore, no paths cleared, no trees or shrubs or plants planted “artificially” – nature can recover and flora and fauna surprise with a big variety. Of course there are man-made paths, but these have been created in correlation to the jungle, with explanation tables wherever necessary. Already looking at the map (available through the website given below) is fascinating. There is a valley of silence, in some parts wolves live, salamanders came back and all is combined with Saarland’s mining history; stockpiles are left and are being “taken over” by nature.There is an adventure camp for kids, where they can learn the skills for living with nature, supervised by experienced teachers and biologists.The...

River Saar maeanders its way through Saarland. Famous and well-known is the spot where it makes a U-turn, called Saarschleife, close to Mettlach.For those who like to spend some more time in this area, there is a beautful an scenic hike of approx. 15 km round trip. It leads over hilltops, through valleys and along the river. Best time would be April to October (not on Mondays, as the ferry boat, you would need to cross Saar river, does not operate Mondays).The hike is dominated by views of Saar river, but also leads you through pristine oak forests and canyons with a lot of wildlife, such as eagle owls, peregrine falcons and kingfishers.On the southern shore of Saar, just some minutes off Saarschleife, you can make a lunch stop at Burg Montclair, which overlooks the valley. Near the castle, you would need to cross the river by ferry and then hike uphill to the famous Saarschleife...

(2) Easy walk, Baroque feeling - Blieskastel

The town centre of Blieskastel is declared protected monument: 133 single buildings do have this status, further 65 are planned to be protected as well. Reichsgräfin Marianne von Leyen formed the town from 1775 to 1793, and the result is a variety of baroque buildings – a pleasure for the eyes.The 25 km easy walk starts with a tour through Blieskastel, passing along Orangerie, Schlosskirche (castle church) and Kapuzinerkloster (capuchin monastery). It leads westwards along a hilltop path, and suddenly meets the biggest megalithe of middle Europe: the Gollenstein. Researchers found out that it dates back to 2000 B.C. The hike passes fruit meadows and leads to Niederwürzbach, a tiny little town, which also has cultural imprints by Marianne von Leyen.
