  • Train

    Saarbrücken Transportation

Being a state capital has some advantages, and despite its small size, Saarbrucken gets its own high-speed ICE line, making it easy to reach from anywhere in Germany. In about two hours the line takes you as far as Frankfurt, from where you can go just about anywhere. Regionally there are direct lines to towns like Kaiserslautern, Trier and...

  • St. Johanner Markt

    Saarbrücken Things to Do

I think most photographs you can find online of Saarbrucken's St. Johanner Markt are taken with a wide angled lens, because it's quite cramped, especially by German standards. Even for town's half its size it is small, and for a state capital it is positively puny. The real squares of note are in front of the castle and Ludwigskirche. However, this...

  • Outlet shops all over town

    Mettlach Shopping

Mettlach has built a reputation of being an outlet town, but contrary to most outlets the shops there are not in a mall, but all in the centre, among cafés and other small shops. Villeroy & Boch have several shops , one of them a Christmas shop with beautiful Christmas ornaments. Other brand names are Trigema, Land's End, Laura Ashley and several...

  • Saarschleife - the loop of the Saar

    Mettlach Things to Do

About the only thing Mettlach is famous for which has nothing to do with ceramics is the loop of the Saar. The best viewpoint is high above the river, in Cloef/Orscholz, a part of Mettlach. The view from there has to be the most often photographed view in the whole state and the trail along the river and then up to the Cloef is one of the best...

  • From the train station to the stadium

    Homburg Transportation

To get to the stadium, take bus 512 to Universitätsklinik or Birkensiedlung. Get out at Saarpfalz-Gymnasium. Go around the school building to the street called “Obere Allee” and follow it uphill. At the top of the hill you will find the stadium. The local club, FC Homburg 08 Saar, is just a shadow of its former glories. Once they played in Germany's...

  • Volklinger Hutte

    Völklingen Things to Do

The Hutte is probably Volklinger's only real draw. But it's a big one. Not only in terms of being a big magnet for tourists, but just through the sheer enormity of the complex. It's almost as big as the town itself. The UNESCO protected World Heritage site was once a bustling, noisy, steaming ironworks. And despite all the cleaning and restoration,...

    Völklingen Shopping

Well, maybe not to die for, but at least to forget all about the million calories éclairs have.We had been told about a very good bakery, somewhere between Grossrosseln and Petite-Rosselle. This somewhere consists of a bridge, maybe 20 meters long. No bakery on this bridge, so we walked on into Petite-Rosselle. And sure enough, just after the first...

  • The best place in town...the only place...

    Kirrberg Restaurants

The owner was actually a jerk. That's probably why they went out of business, considering there is only one other restaurant in town that I have seen in the 2 years I've lived there. There is now another restaurant in it's place, but I don't know what type it is. Once we give it a try, we'll update this information.

    Kirrberg Nightlife

I've been told that there is one bar in the town. This is the place where people gather to have conversations about their cows and sheep. Since I don't owe any, I couldn't attend the meeting :-))
