Elektro-Fachgeschäft: Computer & Electronic Stores

by Weissdorn

Germany along with Japan represent most likely the 2nd largest computer electronic consuming nations that do not speak English. The largest computer convention show in Europe is held every year in Hannover - the CeBit. And that means that fortunately for you digi-freaks out there, that this is a country that you will not be left in dire straights if you need a new piece of hard- or software while you're here. Much to the curiosity of the North Americans, sometimes certain things can be bought here shortly before they hit the American markets. It is estimated that every 1.6 German owns or uses a computer, and replaces it every 3 years. The savings temples if you want to buy hard-or software in Germany are: Saturn http://www.saturn.de Media Markt http://www.mediamarkt.de Promarkt htttp://www.promarkt.deThese are the places where you can shop for anything from that designer Siemens...

Kaufhof, Karstadt , Woolworth: German Department Stores

by Weissdorn

"Kaufhof", "Karstadt" and "Woolworth" are the three major chains of departments of department stores in Germany, with Kaufhof and Karstadt being the major ones. You will find one of these shops in every larger city in Germany. They offer a complete variety of articles ranging from apparell to home improvement supplies, electronics, food, books, in some cases discounted souveniers, stationery and jewelry. There wares are "German standard" are not special, but fair-priced, especially for souveniers. Woolworth's is a discounter, and souveniers from Ludwig II's castle are cheaper in Munich than the real McCoy's in Schwangau. If you're not too concerned about getting the top-of-the-line quality (good or o.k.), then you should go here. For example, if you like a certain style of blouse that everyone seems to be wearing, you can find it for a fair price here - you don't have to pay extra in a...

Apotheke: The German Pharmacy

by Weissdorn

Germany has shops that only sell medication, and it's called the "Apotheke". You can see these shops in any town, because they all have the symbol like the one in the picture. Don't make the mistake asking for a "Drug Store", because someone might misunderstand this and send you to a "Drogerie" which only sells sunderies and toiletries. The types of over-the-counter drugs available without a prescription are limited. You will be able to buy things like mild pain killers, such as Aspirin or Ibuprofene, ointments, and digestive aids. You will not be able to buy anti-biotics, anti-histimines or oral contraceptives without a prescription. EMERGENCY!If you desperately need something like cold medicine in the middle of the night, there is always at least one pharmacy in town that has night watch. Go to any pharmacy and look for the address that has "Notdienst" for that night. If you go to one...
