Football

by antistar

Football in Germany is hugely popular, but unlike in England you can expect to see a top flight game for a reasonable price. Compare a middling Premiership team like Middlesbrough, whose cheapest league day ticket is about 45 euros, to a middling Bundesliga team like Mainz, whose cheapest seat is 15 euros, and which also has even cheaper tickets with standing room only. This says a lot about the different attitudes to the sport between the two countries: in Germany it is still seen as very much a people's game, played for the people. In England it is nothing but big business where profit is all.In Germany the two biggest teams by far are the reds of Bayern Munich and the blues of Schalke. Schalke are based in the massive Ruhrgebeit region in the North West, and Bayern are of course in Bavaria, but their fan base pervades the entire country. This means that pretty much every game...

Bike's and Walks

by mustertal

Cycle's can be hired from the campsite, they also do guided walks. There are plenty of cycle track's and walk way's, map's and guides can be obtained from the shop or reception. In winter this becomes a skiing area, the site has drying room's for ski's and wet clothes.

Bowling, German style!

by Sjalen

Don't miss an opportunity to go kegeln. It is like bowling but smaller and you can play several different types of games. Most villages have their own kegel hall with a bierstube on top so it goes without saying that this is serious business. There are village leagues and champions. You book a couple of lanes and get your own little attached room where you can order beer to keep you going. Just look for "Kegeln" on the side of a bierstube (often in villages and suburbs) and you're in for a great evening with a bunch of friends. Shoes are included in the rent of your lane.

Football anyone? American football that is

by terps94

If you are one of those people who actually understands American Football then I recommend watching one of the games..The league is consist of 6 teams that are based in Amsterdam. Cologne, Berlin, Geilenkirchen( Rhein Fire), Scotland , Barcelona and of course Frankfurt. The games are very inexpensive and outside the stadium they do have some sort of tailgate party which is like any other fest in Germany. So grab a beer , stop ogling the cheerleaders and watch some bone crushing football.

Winter sports in Germany?

by Leipzig

Germany is worth a trip in winter. Best time is between November and March. Only regions above 800m are snow proof.Winter sport regions: Bavarian Alps: one hour south of Munich. Up to 2900m high. Best winter sport region. Snow proof - but expensive. Black Forest : one hour west of Stuttgart. Up to 1400m high. Very expensive region. Harz : Most northern winter sport region. 90min northwest of Leipzig. Up to 1100m high. Moderate prices. Erzgebirge & Thüringer Wald (Ore Mountains & Thuringian Forest) : Winter sport region in the east. 90min south of Leipzig/ 90min north of Nuremberg. Up to 1200m high. Moderate prices. Sauerland : 2 hours east of Cologne. Up to 800m high. Not snow proof. Bayrischer Wald (Bavarian Forest): 2 hours northeast of Munich. Up to 1400m high. Quite expensive.

Bundesliga

by mtncorg

This is the highest soccer/football league in Germany. The equivalent to the NFL in America. Each of the 18 teams play each other twice in one season to determine a German champion. Seasons last from August to May. Like in other football-crazed countries in the world, German fans are crazy and extremely loyal to their teams. Teams have old and cherished histories, which most true fans will be able to recite at the drop of a hat. The team Bayern Munchen has had most success in the Bundesliga over the years winning the German championship an unprecedented 18 times - the nearest other team has only single digit success - thus serving as a German formula for success similar to that of the New York Yankees, in American baseball. The match in question for my visit was the Arena auf Schalke in Gelsenkirchen of the Ruhrgebiet - no fewer than 6 of the 18 teams hail directly from or on the...

ALPIN SKIFAHREN/ALPINE SKIING

by mtncorg

Alpine skiing has its apex in the Bavarian Alps, though you can ski in small areas in other hills of Germany, as well - nothing like trying to make it down the hill at the Erbeskopf in the Hunsruck, the Hohe Sauerland, or the narrow paths of the Gosser Feldberg near Frankfurt. The main resort of the Alps is Garmisch-Partenkirchen. This was the site of the 1936 Winter Olympiad and there are World Cup events held here every year. Ski areas center on the cable cars: Kreuzeckbahn, Hausbergbahn, Osterfelderbahn and the Eckbauerbahn. Also the Wankbahn. Finally, there is skiing atop the Zugspitze on the Schneeferner. Here in Garmisch you will find the German Alpine Central. There are other good areas in the Alps to seek out as well - Steinplatte, Obertsdorf, etc..

Fishing in Germany - Getting a License

by Weissdorn

Anything that effects the environment is very regulated in Germany. Fortunately for foreign tourists, they have made exceptions. The rules vary from German state to state so please be careful. Violations are punished with stiff fines. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern:Tourists just have to get a license. You don't have to take a course.Lower SaxonyYou have to find a licensed fisherman to fish together with - you can't fish alone (ask at the tourist info where the local "Anglersportklub" is).BerlinIf you can prove you have a hunting and fishing license for your hometown, they will give you a license. If you can't - you can't fish here.Schleswig-HolsteinAs a foreign tourist, you can apply for up to a forty day exemption from a fishing license. You can ask at the local tourist office where to apply for exemption - costs about 15 dollars.ThuringiaForeign tourists should ask at the local tourist office...

Boarding in Germany

by Bendokan

Boarding in Garmish Partenkirchen ! The Zugspitze is the highest mountain in Germany and snowboarding is hot out there.Abundance of snow, good schnaps (local strong alcoholic drinks) and good food.Worth to try out as it is cheaper than neighbouring countries. All equipment can be used, though better for speed, not too many jumps...But freestyle means be free to do as you please, create your own jumps.
