House Boat on the Müritz

by Weissdorn

It used to be that you couldn't go on a river cruise with your own boot without hiring a local skipper, or at least nothing short of going through all of the red tape of getting an inland water way pilot's license. Finally some commercial boat charter companies convinced the German government that house boats weren't so complicated and dangerous, so that you could finally rent one after finishing a one day course on how to operate the boat, and the locks. Now they have package trips for tourists. You can go fishing and have a great vacation in Waren on the Müritz River, without having to get German boating and fishing licenses. Although it's only restricted to a section of the 2000 lake and river area, it is big enough to enjoy a week's vacation here. The house boats are equipped with everything you need, including kitchen utensils, blankets, sheets, pillows, a bathroom with hot & cold...

Sailing on the Northern Seas

by Weissdorn

The Germans have a long tradition when it comes to sailing. In bygone days, even the German Kaiser (Emperor) had his own racing sail boat. This sport is one of the "secret" sport activities in Germany, because it doesn't always get a lot of media attention, like soccer, skiing, car racing and tennis do. For instance did you know the winner of the Volvo Ocean Race (sailing race around the world) for 2002 was a German team? They may even take America's Cup away from the Australians next year. Germany has a number of water sports areas, including the North and the Baltic Seas, Lake Constance and Lake Muritz, to name a few. Basically you need a boat, which you can hire from a chartering company. The tricky part is the license question. According to German law, anyone sailing on German waters must have a German sport vessel license. According to EU law, anyone sailing on German waters must...

Beach Volleyball and Beach Badminton in MG

by elbe

Mönchengladbach is of course a few hundred kilometers far from the beach. But that doesn't mean that you have to abstain from beach activities. The Return Sportpark offers beach badminton and beach volleyball indoor. Included in the charge is a sauna-visit afterwards in the two small saunas. The whole Sportpark is very clean and has a nice atmosphere. Tennis and "normal" badminton is also possible. Sportclothes and the equipment for the activity you chosed (and of corse a towel for the shower and the sauna-visit afterwards :-)

Soccer at the Bökelberg in Mönchengladbach

by elbe

If there's something the Mönchengladbacher take pride in it's the Borussia, their soccer team. Although it had the best times in the Seventies, the Mönchengladbacher are still loyal fans. The legendary Bökelberg-Stadion is located at the most expensive neighbourhood of Mönchengladbach. In a few years it will be replaced by the Nordpark situated more outside of Mönchengladbach. Good shoes if you just have a standing room and clothes for bad weather if you don't have a roofed place.

Indoor ski centre near Neuss

by elbe

Close to Korschenbroich you find Allrounder Winter World in Neuss. It is Europe’s largest and Germany’s first indoor winter sports area. The slope is 300 m long and 60 m wide. One hour costs € 15, but from 8 to 12 p.m. you get four hours entrance for € 20 altogether. You also have to pay a collateral fee of € 7 for the entrance card.If you just want to do aprés ski: you have free admission to the gastronomic establishments.Opening times: every day from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Catering: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.It's okay if you won't get out of training but nothing is better than skiing on a glacier slope ;-) You can borrow ski (€ 6), snowboards (€ 6), shoes (€ 4), trousers (€ 7) and jackets (€ 7) for a fee. So you don't need to bring your own equipment. But the snowboards are not that good nevertheless I would give you the advice not to bring your own because the slope sometimes (especially in the...

Diving in Düsseldorf ;-)

by elbe

Okay, I must admit that Düsseldorf is not really close to the Sea. In fact you need about three hours to drive to the Dutch North Sea. But there are also opportunities to learn diving (I think if you already dive it's not worth to go on with reading this tip). Of course it's not as attractive as learning in the (warm) Sea but in fact it has its own charme. The first four lessons are given in a swimming pool (don't laugh!). Before you go there every time you've a theoretical lesson. And the final test is in a lake close to Düsseldorf (I made it in the middle of December when it was - 2 °C, quite an interesting experience ;-) on a weekend. You have to dive two times every day for at least 20 minutes. Our teachers were great and had a lot of humour and patience.

No wonder they always beat us?

by JamesHill78

A few pints in the 'Biergarten' followed by watching a bundesliga match at the Olympic Stadium. Part of the largest sports complex in Europe and built for the 1972 Olympic Games. I also recommend a trip to the top of the tower for an outstanding view of the entire sporting empire, including two multi-purpose stadiums, swimming complex, indoor arena, velodrome, ice stadium, boating lake, olympic hill and extensive catering outlets. As many items of clothing as possible if spectating during the winter. Ear plugs if its a big match, the crowd is deafening!

Horseback Riding in Germany

by Weissdorn

Germany has a number of resorts where you can enjoy equestrian sports. Although they do not have quite the same tradition that they do in the U.K. (there are no fox hunts), they are also fans of English Equestrian Style, at least for the most part. There are a number of resorts, though, that prefer North American Equestrian style (Western) - Germans have great romantic notions about cowboys and indians. Other than a pair of sturdy riding boots or your own helmet, you don't need anything else. Horses, tack, saddles, and even helmuts are included. The resorts usually have a choice of courses, trails, and lenghts of stay.

I wasn't really sure where to put this one as I took it somewhere on the Autobahn between Aachen and Koeln.http://www.stadt-kerpen.de/ I kind of get the impression you hire the karts there!
