by AndreasK In my opinion, the most interesting tourist attractions in Westphalia are the water castles. Over 20 of the castles can be visited. Some of them have restaurants, a few offer accomodation; at others castles, like Bagno in Steinfurt, you can attend concerts. Leave a Comment

by diver-x Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a preserved medieval walled town in Bavaria on the 'Romantic Road.' Talk about a picture-perfect little German town - this is it! The classic medieval architecture is decked with colorful window boxes spring thru fall and with evergreen garlands and mistletoe in winter. Rothenburg is touristy: no doubt about it. But it is a truly charming place worthy of a stay for at least 2 or 3 nights. Those who stay inside the walls are treated to mornings and evenings without the crowds. Hotels range from expensive to dirt cheap, and keep in mind that you don't always get what you pay for. I prefered the small inexpensive pensions over the larger more expensive ones. by MichaelFalk1969 The Mühlenhof is a small open air museum in Münster, located near the Aasee-Lake in the vicinity of the Münster Zoo. It has several farmstead buildings with interior plus a windmill. The guided tours are led by a "Kiepenkerl", a nice fellow clad in a blue skirt typical for the Münster region. In former times, they were smalltown tradesmen, wandering from town to town and selling goods from their backpack (called "Kiepe"). Address: Münster - near AaseeDirections: follow the signs to the Zoo

by lobstop The former concentration camp 'Flossenbuerg' is a museum now and gives a shocking impression of the conditions in those prisons during the 3rd Reich. In order to get more impression, visit http://www.gedenkstaette-flossenbuerg.de (only in German) ...shocking... Leave a Comment

by AndreasK The water castle Anholt is situated within a 42 acres park. The castle is surrounded by a wall dating back to Roman times. Today, the castle not only hosts a museum, but also a restaurant and a hotel (DM 150 per night and person). The castle is situated in Isselburg-Anholt, near the Dutch border, about 60 km north of the cities of Oberhausen and Duisburg. Leave a Comment

Roman Temple by MichaelFalk1969 Xanten (Rhineland) has been a roman border town in antiquity, and some buildings of the settlement have been (partly) reconstructed in an archaeological park, featuring villas, temples, and even a small roman arena, giving you a vivid impression on what life was like at the frontier of the Roman Empire and "Germania". Be aware that most buildings are only partly rebuilt to give an impression what they looked like; sometimes you just see foundations. Xanten itself has some nice Old Town - buildings and is worth a detour. Address: XantenDirections: Xanten

175th Oktoberfest 2008 With more than six million visitors, over five million litres of seasonal beer specifically brewed for Oktoberfest, 200,000 pairs of sausages, and 100 spit-roasted oxen – a big cosmopolitan festival with people from all of the world. The "Wiesn" is transformed into a fairground with beer tents for 16 days, from the 2nd Saturday in September to the first Sunday in October each year. The Beer festival starts with a parade on Saturday morning, the breweries with horse-drawn carriages and groups in traditional costumes parade through the streets of Munich. The opening ceremony begins at the Theresienwiese on Saturday noon, when Munich’s mayor taps the first beer barrel and says “O’zapft is!” – the barrel is tapped. Be prepared not only to drink but also to eat, for instance a whole oxen cooked on giant spits, but the main event of the festival: BEER. The Wiesn is filled with thousands of casual and committed beer drinkers guzzling foamy brew for days on end. Last orders are at 10:30pm daily. Munich’s nine breweries all have their own beer tents at the event, Munich itself is also beautiful. Marienplatz in the Old Town is worth a visit and the pedestrian area is great for shopping. Address: Theresienwiese, A large open space in Munich.Directions: Going to the Wiesn with your own car is not a good idea , but access from the west is possible via the A96 (Lindau) or A95 (Garmisch-Partenkirchen) motorways and the Mittlerer Ring Road. Stade is a small town in the outskirts of Hamburg and you can get there easily and within a short time. Stade was not built directely at the river Elbe, but an artificial waterway was built into the centre of the village and in ancient times all of the merchants got their goods taken directely to their shops that way. Its more a decoration nowadays, but it looks great with these canals and so many great half-timbered houses along the canals. Leave a Comment Directions: Take the car, or even better : take the train, Stade is just a few km from the south-western city-limits of Hamburg.

by Pawtuxet I'm so glad there were once builders and craftsmen to create things like this turret. To my mind, the architecture of today cannot come close to comparing. Leave a Comment

by sandravdp The Moeselswimmingpool at Cochem. It is an inside pool with nice slides, and when you swim you can see the river Moesel flowing next to you. The swimmingpool lies directly next to the river. Watch old automobiles and motorcycles in the Rennsportmuseum of Nurburgring. Leave a Comment
