by Pawtuxet This turret was stunning...and what a view of the town below! That is my mother (in her late 70's when we made the trip) peeking out at the glorious view. Leave a Comment

Beethoven house Bonn by margaretvn Visit the beautiful old city of Bonn. The old city centre is beautiful and compact. So it is easy to explore on foot. it was founded by the Romans in 11 BCand it later grew in importance under the Archbishops of Cologne. It is a favourite city of ours because it is the city where Ludwig v. Beethoven was born in 1770. The Beethovenhaus is where the great (in my mind greatest composer) was born on the 16th of December 1770 and where he lived until he was22 years old. He never returned to Bonn. The house is now a museum. You can walk through the house and see musical instruments, manuscripts of his and memorabilia covering his life. by grayfo With its crystal-clear water and fjord-like setting between mountain ridges, Köenigsee is Bavaria’s loveliest lake. The area also forms part of a national park. Leave a Comment

Kleve Gate by MichaelFalk1969 Xanten - a former roman province town (Colonia Ulpia Trajanis) in the Lower Rhine area near the German-Dutch Border - has a nice historic Old Town. Some visible remnants of the city history are the Kleve Town Gate (Klever Tor), the Cathedral, the "Gotische Haus" and several other merchant houses in renaissance style, and a windmill (Kriemhildmühle). The Roman Archaeological Park is in walking distance from the city: The main attractions there are a partly rebuilt arena, a temple and a roman "taverna" with roman baths and a working restaurant, and parts of the fortifications. The Rhine Valley was a much disputed region in the middle ages, and the many scenic castles and ruins testify for this fact. Most of them are open to the public. There is a popular hiking path called "Rheinburgenwanderweg" which allows the best views on the different castles. Just to name a few examples: The extensive ruins of Castle Rheinfels in St. Goar allow you views on two other castles on the opposite river valley as well. An unusual castle is Castle Pfalzgrafenstein, built right in the middle of the river.

Trier is located on the Moselle River, near the Luxembourg border. Among the city's Roman monuments are the Porta Nigra (Black Gate.) which was built in the 4th century. The day we got here was market day. We explored both the Roman Gate (open to the public and full of roman arches) and the market. Directions: Trier is located on the Moselle River, near the Luxembourg border. .

The "Fränkische Schweiz" is an area of special natural beauty, close to the cities of Nuremberg, Bamberg, and Bayreuth. This region along the river Wiesent offers lots of outdoor possibilities like hiking, canoeing, climbing; several spectacular caves are open to the public (the best-known the "Teufelshöhle" = Devil`s Cave in Pottenstein). Just driving through the area is a very scenic experience, as the landscape is lush and marked by small canyons and bizarre rock formations. Almost every little village has its own castle or at least castle ruin. A magnificent baroque church is to be found in the village of Gößweinstein. A word of advice to all foreign visitors: It is a german custom to add ".. Schweiz (meaning: Switzerland) to some regions featuring very remarkable landscapes - so there is a "Fränkische Schweiz", "Holsteinische Schweiz" etc. This does not necessarily mean the region is in any way close or connected to the "real" Switzerland. Address: near Bayreuth / BambergDirections: near Bayreuth / Bamberg

by MichaelFalk1969 30 km north of Görlitz is the small town of Bad Muskau. Its main attraction is a grandiose landscape garden designed by the Count Pückler-Muskau, the most famous landscape gardener of his time, who loved his gardens so much that he went bankrupt due to the money he spend on his hobby. The German-Polish border crosses the park - you can easily cross the border here and visit both parts if you want to (that means if you have your identification ready).
