 | Germany Things To Do | Tips 311 - 320 of 1416 | | This 15th century castle ruins is on a hill overlooking the Old Town. It was first erected as a residence by Prince Elector Ruprecht II. The style is Gothic to High Renaissance. It is still left standing thanks to the Allied Forces which decided not to bomb Heidelberg. So it is now an important building of German architecture history.

While in München, Check out all of the historical places. It was a staging ground for the stormtroopers before the war. Most of the rallies in the 30Äs were taking place there. There is so many historical churches and places that are a must see. Cathedral Church of Our Lady, Theatinerkirche (St. Kajetan), St.-Johann-Nepomuk-Kirche (Asam-Kirche), New town hall (Neues Rathaus),Carillon (Glockenspiel),Bavarian State Opera Haus and Ruhmeshalle. Don't forget Andechs Monastery !! Located on the Holy Mountain above the eastern shore of Lake Ammersee in the middle of Upper Bavaria’s Five-Lakes Region, Andechs Monastery is easily visible from far away. For more than half a millennium it has been a cherished destination for pilgrims. Not to mention one of the best beers around with its brewery, Bräustüberl. Address: Frauenkirche,Frauenplatz 1,80331 München

See the torrential water roaring and spraying. Amazing that all this water volume from the Alps, heart of Europe, eventually flows down Rhine river through Germany all way into the Atlantic Ocean. A popular tourist stopover destination to witness the power of water.

Bonn is the former capital of West Germany until Berlin "took over". It is still a very agreeable city and worthwhile visiting. What Bonn has to offer: - a baroque Old Town Hall - an impressive cathedral - the Beethoven-Haus where the great composer lived - the university, housed in an extensive yellow-coloured baroque palace - the "Macke-Haus", dedicated to the famous local painter - an excellent array of museums on the "Museumsmeile": "Haus der Geschichte" (history), Kunstmuseum (art), Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle Deutschland (temporary exhibitions, mostly history), Museum König (natural history) - nice views on the river Rhine - the Rheinauen-Park: a very nice place to walk, with artificial lakes, sculptures, a japanese Garden and roman gravestones. I love Bayreuth - I studied there. The story I like best about Bayreuth is how the archduchess Wilhelmine, favourite sister of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia, came to the place in the 18th century, found it incredibly boring and decided to build some sights like the Hermitage to make it more attractive. She was very successful indeed! What do when in Bayreuth: - a guided tour through the margraves opera house (Markgräfliches Opernhaus) - a self-guided tour through the margraves palace and the Hofgarten (the palace gardens) - appreciate some of the impressive baroque and 19th-century houses in the inner city - a visit to the "Festspielhaus" (dedicated to the composer Richard Wagner) - see the Richard Wagner museum (in the Hofgarten) - see the "Eremitage" palace and gardens (just a 10 minutes-drive outside the city) - see Schloss Fantaisie (near Bayreuth) Of all sights, the Eremitage (hermitage) is the best and should not be missed. 30 km north of Görlitz is the small town of Bad Muskau. Its main attraction is a grandiose landscape garden designed by the Count Pückler-Muskau, the most famous landscape gardener of his time, who loved his gardens so much that he went bankrupt due to the money he spend on his hobby. The German-Polish border crosses the park - you can easily cross the border here and visit both parts if you want to (that means if you have your identification ready). Address: Bad MuskauDirections: Bad Muskau

Görlitz on the German-Polish border has rightfully earned its UNESCO World Heritage status. It has a unique Old Town with renaissance and baroque houses, beautiful squares and a number of interesting churches. The most impressive one, St. Peter and Paul, has a viewing platform you should not miss. Address: GörlitzDirections: Görlitz
