Marburg - half timbered houses in abundance

by Trekki

If you like to spend a day or two - or even more - in a beautiful relaxing atmosphere, dive into history and wonderful half-timbered house architecture to the fullest, and go and see Marburg. The lively university town (which is the oldest protestant university in Europe, founded 1527) offers a lot of scenic walks through town, it's hills or along the picturesque Lahn river bank. The Lahn also invites for romantic boat tours. For cyclists - it is a very bicycle friendly town - separate bike lanes along all streets, and has the special bike street signs as well, leading to all major attractions. Helpful tourist information can also provide you with suggestions for trips into the surroundings. On the opposite riverside of the castle hill, Lahnberge are located, where University Hospital and science institutes are filled with students' life, and the (new) botanical garden invites for relaxing...

Saarland – one of the most beautiful parts

by Trekki

Of course I am biased, but I don’t mind. Saarland is the smallest state of Germany (apart of the 3 city-states Hamburg, Bremen and Berlin) and is obviously very much overlooked by the majority of foreign travellers and even Germans. It is my country of birth and I am really happy to see how it developed after the closure of so many coal mines and iron industry (the former lifeline of the state). It is much greener now, has a wonderful nature for walking, cycling and all other kinds of sports, a big cultural scene in its capital Saarbrücken and also is home to one UNESCO site, the Völklinger Hütte (Völklingen Ironworks). And it also has famous Villeroy & Boch ceramic company in Mettlach, with a very innovative exhibition works. There is much to discover and even I have much to rediscover! For now I only have old photos of Neunkirchen, another famous former city of ironworks, which has...

Lean back and watch castle galore pass by

by Trekki

I am very much ashamed about my own arrogance for having judged a trip like this to be bourgeois, trashy and for stone aged retired people only. Now I know better or should classify me as bourgeois, trashy and stone aged (haha). This July (2008) I did overcome my ancient prejudices and took a boat trip along the Rhine Gorge. It was meant as a sightseeing tour with my colleague from Brazil, but already as we stepped on the boat it turned out to be a real pleasure. And when I got back home I felt as if I had spend an extra day of holiday. I did drive along this part of Germany in October 2006 with Joan and her husband (she wrote about our tour on her Marksburg Castle page), but now I know that sightseeing on the boat is a much better and relaxing way to see this magical part of Germany. Somehow on this trip I also realised why UNESCO is protecting so many parts of the world by listing them...

Germany’s scenic routes – highly recommended

by Trekki

Inspired by Lori’s recent visit to Rothenburg o.T. and her remark about Romantische Straße I have decided to write about this “scenic route concept”. The concept has its origin in England (mid of last century) and combines cities and villages with similar sights, heritages or landscapes. Often, the routes stretch out into our neighbouring countries, such as the Castle Road (into Czech Republic) or the Oranje Route (from Netherlands into Germany). The scenic routes can be long (up to 2500 km) or short local ones (from 50 km on) and cover a huge variety of themes. These are only some examples:German Fairytale Route,German Wineroute,German Half-timbered Houses Route, Romantic Route (the one, Lori mentioned),German Gemstone Route,Romantic Rhine & Legends Route, and more on the website below. If you plan your visit in Germany, why not check if one of these routes passes nearby your travel...

Nordrhein-Westfalen: Dusseldorf

by antistar

I arrived in Düsseldorf at 6.20am and immediately became confused by the map in the station, trying to leave by the main exit by walking out the back. This was my first experience with the haphazardly organised maps of Dusseldorf, more fun was to be had later. Because my hotel had been fully booked the night before my room wasn't ready until 1pm, and I was left to walk around a freezing Düsseldorf, in the dark, having had no sleep on the night train from Stralsund, and with everything closed. To make matters worse a blizzard blew in from the east as day broke, and the first heavy snow of the year fell on the city, and me. I had even managed to lock my camera up in the station, so I couldn't take any pictures. My first impressions of the city were not good, and I was just about ready to cancel all my holiday plans and go home.Thankfully things got better. The snow made the city beautiful,...

Nordrhein-Westfalen: Bonn

by antistar

Walk around Bonn on a Sunday morning and you'll find it hard to believe that this was once the capital of Europe's economic powerhouse and one of the most influential countries in the world. It's hard to believe that during the Cold War spies would be operating 24/7 in Bonn, a capital at the Western front of one of history's great ideological clashes. When you walk around on a Sunday morning the only thing you can believe is that they could film a Zombie movie here.Today Bonn is quietly and calmly provincial. But it wasn't that much different as a capital city. It was always a bit of a shock that Bonn was chosen in the first place. With the media capital of Cologne next door, and the economic and political pull of cities like Munich, it was hard for the locals to believe that they were chosen. It was harder still to believe when it was taken away after re-unification, but the city still...

Baden-Württemberg: Tübingen

by antistar

Tubingen is more than just a university town, and is a fantastic example of medieval architecture preserved from the relentless bombings of the allies during World War 2. There may be few outstanding examples to pick out for a tourist guide, but there is so much of it that the town simply exudes history from its winding narrow streets, beneath the impossibly tall multicoloured gabled buildings. It rates alongside Bruges for medieval intactness, and is similarly relaxed and built for walking. The highlights of the buildings include the Stiftkirche St Georg in the Marktplatz, which stands out in the views from all over the town, and the Rathaus with its outstanding ornate fresco. My favourite part of the entire visit to the town, however, was the walk along the Platanenallee, the man made island in the Neckar between the .. and Eberhardsbrucke, which on a late autumn day was thick with huge...

Baden-Württemberg: Stuttgart

by antistar

Stuggart is the home of both Mercedes Benz and Porsche, and is something of the Detroit of Southern Germany, except with being home to these two grand marques, it is one of the richest cities in Europe, rather than one of the poorest. The town is synonomous with cars, and even the city's emblem, a black stallion on a yellow background hinting to its earlier incarnation as a stud farm, is almost identical to that other world famous car manufacturer, Ferrari. As I'd already sampled the sausage, this time I was going to treat myself to the sights of two of Europe's finest motor museums, at the factories of Mercedes Benz and Porsche. It's little surprise, then, that the highlight of my trip to Stuttgart was the Mercedes museum. That's not to say Stuttgart didn't have anything else to offer; far from it. The city centre itself is a delight to wander around, and retains much of its character...

Berlin

by antistar

I was quite taken with Berlin, and have decided that one day I'd like to live there. The city has a great vibrancy, a feeling of being very alive, and driving towards a newer, better, place. It is also surprisingly laid back for such a large capital city. Having at least two centers probably helps towards the feeling that it is more of a big town, with a big city life, than a giant metropolis. The pace of life was much slower than the impossibly hectic cities of Paris and London, and I really liked that. For me, brought up as a child during the Cold War, Berlin was always the divided city, a symbol of the insanities brough about by the 20th century's great clash of ideologies. The city has a great history aside from these few decades, and many of the people of Berlin would like to forget this period of the city's history, at least the DDR portion of it, but that is what I wanted to see...

Bavaria: Nuremberg

by antistar

Nuremberg is an amazing city. Relaxed, compact, friendly, beautiful, and full of surprises. One of my colleagues described the city as "Coburg only bigger", and it really does feel just like a big town, but with all the things you associate with a big city. It is even the smallest city in Europe (at just under 500,000 people) to have its own proper underground. The main attractions of the city can be split into three sections:1. The Kaiserburg (the magnificent Imperial castle);2. The Altstadt (fantastic reconstruction of the medieval core);3. The Nazis (from the rallies to the retribution). There's so much here to see and do, with many great towns and cities nearby, that three days would be a minimum just to skim the surface.
