Bavaria: Munich

by antistar

Munich has so much to see and do you'll have difficulty in getting just a glimpse of it in a few days. I stayed a week and only managed a cursory glance at a fraction of the sights I wanted to see. A week would be an absolute minimum to do this city justice, and if you want to go to some of the outlying towns and cities, like Füssen or Augsburg, then you'd better give yourself a couple of weeks.Munich doesn't have a Taj Mahal, Eiffel Tower or other easily identifiable must see attraction, but it does still have plenty to see. The city was largely destroyed during the war, but it has been immaculately reconstructed. The city is a delight to wander around at all hours, especially the many parks. The English Gardens are fantastic, but the gardens of the many palaces can be even more spectacular. In autumn, when leaves create a carpet of ochres, cinnamons and saffrons, they are jaw...

Bavaria: Garmisch-Partenkirchen

by antistar

For two weeks before I arrived the weather report had been predicting rain, clouds and low temperatures. It was looking so bad I almost cancelled the trip and stayed at home. Then as the long holiday weekend approached the little weather boxes came up suns like the wheels of a fruit machine - ching... ching... ching... ching... jackpot! Every day turned out hot and sunny, with not a spot of rain. Like the weather Garmisch itself turned out to be the perfect holiday destination, with stunning scenery, plenty to do and friendly locals.Garmisch-Partenkirchen (GAP) is actually a town made up of two villages that joined together for the Winter Olympics of 1936. From a map its hard to tell them apart, but the two old villages are neatly divided by the Partnach river, with each one having its own clear identity. Garmisch is the dominant member of the partnership, which isn't helped by the fact...

Bavaria: Bamberg

by antistar

For a small city, Bamberg punches well above its weight in terms of history and tourist attractions. It is easily one of the premiere medieval towns in Germany, perhaps even Europe, and competes with the likes of Bruges for historical splendour and photogenicity. Straddling the River Regnitz, and with sites and scenic views dotted around the seven hills about, Bamberg has more than its fair share of unforgettable views, including the old town hall perched precariously over the middle of the fast flowing river snaking through the houses. It's very easy to be taken by this beautiful little city, and it should not be missed if you are in the area. This city of 70,000 people has a long and glorious history. Although probably much older, it was first brought to life in the eleventh century by Emperor Heinrich II, who wanted to turn the seven hills into a Rome of the north. While his wish was...

Exploring Schwarzwald/Black Forest.

I would suggest you visit the website http://www.blackforest-tourism.com which is the English version of the official German tourist office for the area. What I always do is order brochures (I find downloading too much of a hassle).Brochures are sent to you for free. You can either use the form (if you have some basic knowledge of German, it shouldn't be too difficult) at http://www.schwarzwald-tourismus.info/service/prospektbestellung and tick off the brochures you want. Or you can e-mail: mail@schwarzwald-tourismus.infoIf you order the brochure through the form, then I would order:* Panoramic Map Black Forest - Panoramic Map including daytrips* Experience the Natural Parks* KONUS- Bus and rail for free Use busses and trains free of charge to experience the Black Forest.* Hiking in the Black Forest Information on hiking in the Black Forest: tours, long distance trails, hiking without...

The Neues Rathaus

by traveldave

Munich's Neues Rathaus, or New Town Hall, is a neo-Gothic building that takes up the northern side of the Marienplatz. It was built between 1867 and 1909 by Georg Hauberrisser. It is the site of the famous Glockenspiel, or mechanical clock, that goes off every morning at 11:00 a.m and afternoon at 5:00 p.m.

Munich

by traveldave

The capital of Germany's southernmost province of Bavaria is Munich. With a metropolitan area of 2,320,000 inhabitants, it is Germany's third-largest city. Munich is referred to as a Millionendorf, which means a "village of a million people," because it has the feel of a village rather than a big city. The word Munich is derived from the word Munichen, meaning "at the monks," because it was originally a monastic settlement founded on the banks of the River Isar near the Bavarian Alps. The monastery was first settled by the monks in 777 A.D. and has since grown to become one of the major economic cities of Germany.Heavily damaged by Allied bombing raids during the Second World War, it has been extensively restored to its original form. The Altes Rathaus, or Old Town Hall (pictured here), is a fifteenth-century building remodelled in 1968. It dominates the Marienplatz, which is at the...

Ultra-popular but extraordinary Neuschwanstein!

by alza

Years ago (again!) I visited Neuschwanstein Castle. It was so many years ago that we saw it by chance as we drove to Austria. Yet the visitors crowd was large already, mostly inside the Castle. Our explorations around the outside was far from crowded, maybe because we walked all the way instead of getting on a horse-drawn buggy or other.Today, the Castle is covered by the many traveller's blogs and travel sites so I won't go into structural and décor details. Suffice it to say that we really enjoyed our tour of the Castle and the anecdotes we heard along the way. Very old-time romantic. My strongest memory is that my friend and I were speaking French to each other, quick, mumbled Quebec French -- and two American gals behind us wondered between themselves what it was we were actually speaking! One said "I think it's Spanish?" and the other said "Oh no, I know Spanish and it's nothing like...

Murgleiter Hiking Trail - Black Forest

by MichaelFalk1969

The (strenuos) Murgleiter hiking path is one of the best-rated in Germany, and deservedly so. Some of the best panoramic views of the northern Black Forest can be found along this route. It is located between the cities Gernsbach - Forbach - Baiersbronn (1/2 hour driving distance from Karlsruhe); it is recommended to plan in three days if you want to hike the whole route. The most beautiful part in my opinion is the hike from Gernsbach to Forbach (ca. 24 km / 8 hours). The "Murgleiter" path is marked by a "M" on a grey field; the path is well-signed. Regular "S-bahn" train connections make it possible to start in one city and return by rail to your starting point after completing the hike.

Feldberg (Black Forest/Schwarzwald)

by MichaelFalk1969

A nice hiking route up to the summit of the Feldberg, the highest mountain in the south-western state of Baden-Würtemberg (Germany), begins behind the parking lot of the hotel "Waldhotel", opposite the bus station "Notschrei". To find it, you have to drive past Freiburg to Oberried and then direction "Todtnau". From here, follow the signs "Höhenweg" or "Feldberggipfel" (one-way ca. 2,5 hours). It is recommended to hike on a normal weekday, as the path is busy with many hikers and mountain bikers on weekends. The path itself leads first through a wood but later offers great vistas of the Black Forest mountain scenery. On top of the Feldberg, a weather station, a television mast and a viewing tower have a somewhat anticlimactic effect, but the panoramic views make up for that.

Cross of Peace

by hunterV

Why not take a mountain path to the top of the mountain in the mountaineous south of Germany and enjoy the splendid views from the mountain top. The cross is the end of the route and is called The Peace Cross. Such hikes are very popular with German young people. You don't have to have any special mountaineering equipment for that hike: it is an easy path leading you upwards to the mountain top. The height and the views are just superb! This pictures was taken in the vicinity of Balingen to the south of Stuttgart.
