Kloster Eberbach (Rheingau)

by MichaelFalk1969

The Eberbach monastery in the Rheingau are near Wiesbaden/Eltville was historically one of the richest and most influential monasteries in the Rhein-Main area until 1806, in the first place because of their role as a producer of quality wines (until this day). The monastery buildings are open for visitors; one of the most remarkable locations is the former dormitory, a film location for the movie "The Name of the Rose" with Sean Connery (in the movie, it is the scriptorium).

Zoo Wuppertal

by MichaelFalk1969

Though Wuppertal is without doubt one of the less attractive cities of Germany (due to its location in a valley, it does not even have a proper recognizable city centre), the Wuppertal Zoo is a real sight and has a very attractive, landscape park-like location. I

Bavarian Forest

by MichaelFalk1969

This mountain area in south-eastern Bavaria close to the Czech Border is great for hiking in every season. Some of the most popular hikes go up to the Rachel, Arber, and Lusen Mountain. These hikes are not to difficult even in winter and also do-able for families with kids, great panoramic views in fine weather. Other attractions in the area include a treetop walk and a wildlife park ("Tierfreigelände") with animals from northern and central Europe. Good bases for exploring the Bavarian Forest are Grafenau and Spiegelau. The local tourist informations can provide you with detailed hiking maps.

Ahrtal (Rotweinwanderweg)

by MichaelFalk1969

The hiking path through the Ahr Valley (Ahrtal) wine region is one of the most popular in Germany. The "Rotweinwanderweg" hiking path (symbold: red wine grape) is 35 km long (one way) but it is easily possible to shorten the route. The most rewarding stretch in my opinion is the track between Altenahr and Bad Neuenahr/Ahrweiler, leading through valleys full of beautiful vineyards. At the end of your journey, you can take the train back to your starting point, they come quite regularly during daytime. All major cities along the "Rotweinwanderweg" are usuallly very crowded in High Season, so it is recommendable to go early.

Germany and Switzerland tips

by bobbomper

Hi,There is a lot to see and keep you busy in that part of Europe. A week in Switzerland alone would be filled quickly. In Switzerland, depending on your interests, Thun, Rheinfall (waterfall near Basel) and the Schynige Platte Bahn are great trips.Places of interest in Switzerland:www.travellingbazaar.com/travel%20switzerland.htmlIf you move into Germany, then Munich and Regensburg (already recommended, and should not be missed!) are both interesting. Of couse you could hop off at Lindau on the Bodensee (biggest lake in Europe) before heading up to Munich. So much to see, really depends on your desire, i.e nature, cities, etc.Places of interest in Germany:www.travellingbazaar.com/travel%20germany.htmlHave fun whereever you end up!Bob

Castle views and River Cruises

by leo.weeks

I love Munich, but if you want to explore an awesome castle and see unique to Germany sights then you HAVE to go to Sankt Goar and tour Burg Rheinfels. It is inexpensive but the best castle in the world to tour because you can climb on and crawl through on your own or take a guided tour or both. The views of the Rhein river and the largest concentration of castles in a small area that you will find make it the most beautiful place in the world in my opinion ( I have been to quite a few countries I must say) Take a 3 hour river cruise upstream to Rudesheim and tour the Asbach cognac factory, or take a wine tasting cruise or castle sights cruise. "KD" has a variety of these cruises for less than 20 Euros depending on the distance you want to go. My wife and I camped in St Goar and took the boat to Rudesheim and it was like taking a week off it was so relaxing and the sights were so...

Site Seeing on a Bike

by Ilike2trvl

If you really want to see the beauty of Germany, you need to see it by bicycle. Wiesbaden is filled with paved majestic trails that can take you to several cities. It is the trip there that makes the ride so wonderful. You can discover wine fests, carnivals and shops otherwise missed by driving. The trails are marked with signs that point in the direction of the nearest city. If you are concerned about getting lost or just want to plan a trip then you can stop at the shell gas station or most bicycle shops and purchase a map. On the other hand if you just want to enjoy the ride then sign up for one of the many bicycle tours; they are in English as well as German. While Saturday is a very popular day to ride and given that shops are open, Sunday is family day and the trails closest to the cities are usually filled with walkers early in the morning and through the afternoon following...

Schloss Linderhof

by Jim_Eliason

This is one of the palaces of Mad King Ludwig I of Bavaria. Although much less grand in size than his later projects, this one unlike soem others was actually completed during the his lifetime and was a favorite retreat of Ludwig's.Be sure not to miss one of the palace grounds most unique features the Venus Grotto, an artificial cave Ludwig had built just for performances of his favorite operas.

Munich is the capital of the once independant kingdom of Bavaria, part of germany since consolidation under Prussian Chancellor Bismarck. It the gateway to the Alps and a lot fo waht we think of a German is in fact defined by Bavaria
