Goslar

by MichaelFalk1969

Goslar in Lower Saxony is today a quiet provincial city, but in the Middle Ages it had much greater historic significance. Once it was a rich mining and trading town, later a member of the Hanseatic League, and even Emperors coveted the posession of this place. The medieval conflict between Emperor Friedrich "Barbarossa" and Duke Henry "the Lion" of Saxony escalated when Henry demanded Goslar for the continued support of the Emperor. The many preserved historic buildings in the city testify the wealth of the Goslar patricians. Even economic history was written in Goslar, as the historic home of the Siemens family ("Siemenshaus") stands here.Among the main attractions are the Kaiserpfalz, the historic emperor`s residence; the Old Town Hall; the pretty Old Town with its unique architecture; the Marktkirche - church; and the central market square with the fountain crowned by a golden eagle,...

First of May Pole, Munich

by hopang

If you visit the city of Munich towards the end of April or early May, you will be able to notice the First of May Pole (or simply known as Maypole) erected in many parts of the city of Munich. Of course it will be better if you visit the city of Munich on 1st of May to witness the actual celebration! We did not have the opportunity to witness the actual celebration. We have heard that the celebration often comes with musics and dance! They were erected to commemorate Labour Day (erster Mai). The poles are erected from tall tree trunks from either pine or birch trees. The poles are quite eye-catching with lovely colour ribbons of blue and white and almost identical in every one that we have seen in the city. They remind us of mid summer celebrations in Sweden with their own special mid summer poles which they dance in a circle around the pole with musics of course. The Maypole certainly...

Nightview of Kassel City Centre

by hopang

The City Hall building (Stadhalle) located at Kassel City Centre is beautifully illuminated at night as depicted in our photogrphs on the right. The building is also known as Congress Palace. It is located just within a stone's throw from Hotel Ramada. It attracted us to come out from our hotel rooms after dinner to have a look and to take some fresh air. We were very glad we did. It was really amazing! Nevertheless the rest of the Kassel City Centre is not very well illuminated at night!

Harbour Cruise, Hamburg

Harbour cruise is an ideal and excellent way to see the city of Hamburg from a different perspective, i.e. from the water. The harbour cruise down River Elbe from Hamburg docks is a very popular tourist attraction in the city of Hamburg. There are many tour operators to choose from. Please enquire the route the boat will take before you pay for your trip! One of the best and most popular tour operators in the city of Hamburg that we can recommend is Hadag Seetouristik und Fährdienst. The details of the boat tour operator are listed below. Several special tours organised by Hadag are quite interesting and extraordinary. Please visit their website below for more information regarding those tours. You may also e-mail to the following address for more information regarding Hadag Cruises:- info@hadag.de. It is advisable to purchase HVV group ticket which entitles the travellers to one whole...

The Oldest City In Germany

by JohnnyGeek

If you visit only ONE city in Germany, let it be Trier. What? Where? Yes...Trier.Trier is billed as the Oldest City in Germany. This actually a bit too humble. Founded by the ancient Romans on or before 16 BC - it's the oldest city in "Modern Europe", as everything else in "Europe" at that time was technically the Roman Empire.Positioned near the Luxembourg border in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, right on the Moselle River, Trier is quite literally the stereotypical "German Town" that you always think of when you close your eyes and imagine. The city is literally dotted with ancient Roman ruins, still well-preserved architecture, cathedrals, and museums.Personally, my absolute favorite place on this Earth is corridor behind the Liebfraunkirche, which is connected to the St. Peter's DOM cathedral. I don't know what it is - I'm not religious, but my world simply melts in that place....

Lüneburger Heide

by MichaelFalk1969

A national park of great natural beauty located roughly between Hannover to the south and Hamburg to the northwest. The landscape is dominated by heather, moor and birch woods (ideal for hiking); the "highest" elevation is the "Wilseder Berg" (Mount Wilsede) - a practical joke, since it is only 170 m "high". The hiking paths to the "Totengrund" or the "Pietzmoor" are also very worthwhile. The small Heide-Museum in Wilsede (only accessible by foot or bycicle) shows how the local farmers coped with the poor soil in the olden days.A possible base for exploring the Lüneburger Heide would be the small village of Schneverdingen. Many historic cities are only a short driving distance from here, like Lüneburg, Celle etc. Also worth seeing: The bird zoo (Vogelpark) in Walsrode.

Mathildenhöhe & Rosarium - Darmstadt

by MichaelFalk1969

Darmstadt is better than its reputation. The city was heavily bombed in WW2, and the rapid rebuilding afterwards shows. Yet this city has a really interesting sight to offer, the "Mathildenhöhe", an artists colony with a good art noveau-museum and a russian-orthodox chapel. Also worthwhile: The Rosenhöhe, a Botanical Garten with roughly 200 species of roses, flowering from June to September. The Rosenhöhe is in the immediate vicinity of the Mathildenhöhe - a public park with the statues of lions on huge columns, at the main entrance.

Heidelberg

by MichaelFalk1969

Heidelberg - though crowded with tourists at any time of the year - still remains an iconic and beautiful destination for foreign and domestic visitors, with plenty of attractions. It is worthwhile to take your time here and not to try to tick off as many sights as possible in a short span of time (as some do). Here is a possible walkthrough (likely duration 3 -4 hours): A possible entry-point into the Oldtown of Heidelberg would be the pretty Kirchplatz square (with a statue of the Virgin Mary at the center). Only a few metres from here the proper Oldtown with the main square, the Townhall and the Heiliggeistkirche (Church of the Holy Ghost) begins. If you visit the church, climb the tower and enjoy the view on the Oldtown and the river Neckar. Just opposite the church, one of the oldest historic buildings of Heidelberg - the Ritterhaus - can be seen (with elaborate sandstone carvings...

Hometown of Johannes Gutenberg - Mainz

by csordila

Johannes Gutenberg's invention for the printing of books perfected in 1450 and successfully applied for his "Holy Bible" in 1452 - was probably bigger significance at the time than the invention of computer. But the historic Mainz is known not only for Gutenberg, but for its excellent wines, as well. The endless vineyards all along the river are famous for especially the renowned Riesling. The secret is nothing else than a lot of sunshine, a mild climate and the fine soil. The wine festival takes place in every September, where the endless assortment of wines may be sampled in the city park. And without eating, how would the wine be absorbed? Do not worry, you can taste the famous local Spundekäse with chopped raw onion and pretzels or Oma's Schmalzbrot - who may resist there? Also Gutenberg was honored by the Archbishop and received annually among others 2.000 liters of wine tax-free,...
