Hansestadt Lübeck

by ant1606

No question why Lübeck is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list. This jewel city occupies an island on the Trave river and thrived in the 14th century to become the hub of the Hanseatic League.Among wonderful medieval buildings, Holstentor is probably the most charming for its dominating position. Along with the Burgtor, it survived the destruction occurred at the end of WWII and it's the former eastern access gate to the city. The City Hall is centrally located and a fascinating building, its mixed architecture is simply history speaking of itself. It would be highly reductive to mention only these two features and my suggestion is to wander around in search of exquisite corners to be discovered in a couple of days.Among the fine churches, Petrikirche (St. Peter) is desecrated and gives a chance to climb up the belltower for a comprehensive bird-eye view over the city.

Berlin - East Side Gallery

by ant1606

When in Berlin, it's hard to leave the infamous Berlin's Wall out of one's thoughts.A good portion of it is still standing in its original location and serves as a permanent art exhibition named East Side Gallery, the wall side facing former East Berlin. One among its most notorious artworks is dubbed "The Kiss of Death" and depicts former Soviet and GDR leaders Leonid Brezhnev and Erich Honecker in the act of kissing each other - which can be a common salutation among male population in Russia. This artwork was actually repainted by the original author after it was deleted some years ago.The caption in German language means "My God, please help me survive this deadly love".

Palace Bridge, Berlin

by hopang

The Palace Bridge (Schlossbrücke in German) is located at the eastern end of Unter den Linden in the heart of the city of Berlin. This popular bridge has a wonderful view of the Spree River and its banks especially Lustgarten and the Berlin Cathedral. Schlossbrücke has eight lovely statues (four on each side of the bridge). The bridge together with the statues were designed and created by Karl Friedrich Schinkel in the middle of the 19th century. This historical bridge was at one time known as Marx-Engels bridge due to its location at Marx-Engels Platz. The statue "Nike assists the wounded warrior" is depicted on our second photograph. Our third photograph depicts the statue "Athena leads the young warrior into the fight" and our fourth photograph "Athena protects the young hero". Don't miss these lovely statues when you walk pass the bridge towards Alexander Platz from Brandenburg Gate....

St. Mary's Church, Berlin

by hopang

St. Mary's Church (Marienkirche in German) is located near the Neptune Fountain (Neptunbrunnen) at Alexander Platz in the heart of the city of Berlin. It was built in the early 14th century as Roman Catholic church. It was later converted to Lutheran Protestant church. It is one of the oldest churches in the city of Berlin. In fact it is the second oldest church in the city of Berlin after Nikolaikirche (St. Nicholas' Church). St. Mary's Church was constructed of granite and bricks. A statue of Martin Luther can be seen outside the church. Inside the church, visitors are able to view a 22 meter long and two meter high fresco of the Dance of Death (please refer to below website). Opening hours are between 10.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m. daily during the summer months. Take the opportunity to visit this lovely church when you are around Alexander Platz.

Neptune Fountain, Berlin

by hopang

Neptune Fountain (Neptunbrunnen in German) is located between Marienkirche and Red Town Hall near the TV Tower at Alexanderplatz in the heart of the city of Berlin. It was designed and sculptured by Reinhold Begas in the late 19th century. The fountain was originally erected at Schlossplatz but later moved to its present location in 1969. The old palace was severely damaged during World War II and later demolished. The fountain is approximately ten meter high and slightly less than 20 meters in diameter. It is probably the most beautiful fountain in the city of Berlin. The statue of the Roman sea god Neptune is located above the fountain with four female figures sitting at the edge of the fountain. The four female figures represent River Elbe with fruits and cobs, River Oder with goat and skins, River Rhein with fish net and leaves and River Weichsel with woods. These rivers once flew...

Lustgarten, Berlin

by hopang

Lustgarten (Pleasure Garden in English) is located on the banks of Spree River at southern end of the Museum Island. It is a public park which had been re-landscaped several times over the centuries. It was once used as a kitchen garden to Berlin City Palace in the 16th century. It was later redesigned in the 19th century by Peter Joseph Linné. A fountain was erected in the center of the park then and later replaced by a bronze equestrian statue of Friedrich Wilhelm III. Most parts of the Lustgarten were severely damaged during World War II. Today Lustgarten is flanked by Altes Museum to the north and Berlin Cathedral to the east and is quite bare in its center. It has been used as a parade ground, for rallies, protests and demonstrations over the years. During the summer months many locals and foreign tourists simply relax at Lustgarten as depicted on our main photograph above....

Potsdamer Platz, Berlin

by hopang

Potsdamer Platz is another square in the city of Berlin bustling with lots of activities. It is located at the southeast of Tiergarten, approximately one kilometer south of Brandenburg Gate. It was named after the city of Potsdam and was at one time the busiest traffic intersection in the world before World War II. Many of the buildings in and around Potsdamer Platz were severely damaged during the second world war. It is still one of the hubs of the city and is still undergoing reconstruction to become one of the commercial centers in Berlin. Many new skyscrapers have mushroomed in and around Potsdamer Platz. One of the most prominent buildings at Potsdamer Platz is Sony Center. The square is certainly gradually becoming the new heart of the city!

Tip Photo

by hopang

Alexander Platz is perhaps the most popular square in downtown Berlin. It is certainly one of the most crowded squares in the city dotted with lots of shops, hotels, bars and restaurants. There are lots of activities going on in and around the square. One of the most popular features in the square is the World Time Clock (Weltzeituhr in German). It was constructed in 1969 as part of Alexanderplatz's redevelopment. The time clock features a revolving cylinder which contains twenty four different time zones in the world. A model of solar system is located at the top of the World Time Clock.
