Frankfurt

by iandsmith

If you're coming to Germany, there's a fair chance you might be arriving in Frankfurt. This is a city that suffered badly during WWII but re-invented intself into a modern city of importance. Here and there are delightful remnants of its past but, by and large, for me anyway, it is a working city with not as many highlights as you'd expect in cities further south in Europe.Still, there's more than enough to wile away a few days and, with fellow Vter Nemorino to guide me at times, I wandered around and thoroughly enjoyed my couple of days. However, one thing Nemorino failed to mention was their annual parade, the Carnivale of Franfurt. Though not as large or well known as the one in Cologne, it certainly had more than enough to impress me.The first image shown here is the one that aroused my curiousity due to the attire these people were garbed in and prompted me to visit the helpful...

Hameln - City of the Pied Piper

by MichaelFalk1969

Hameln is a wonderful small place with a lot of historic heritage, a little off the beaten path from the classic tourist routes but very worthwhile to visit. The legend of the Pied Piper contributed much to the popularity of the city and is thoroughly exploited by the locals: rats (though not live ones) are everywhere. Apart from that, Hameln has a unique Old Town where half-timbered architecture blends in with patricians houses built in the style of the "Weser Renaissance", typical for the region.

Potsdam's palaces

by sourbugger

At the end of the S-Bahn line out of Berlin stands a very proud and impressive town - Potsdam. It seems a pity that most visitors skip the town for the delights of the Prussian palaces. This is a pity as it is one of the finest German towns I have come across. The Sansoussi park is one of the great treaures of Europe and is crowned with the 'New Palace' which was begun at the end of the seven years' war. There is no secret in the fact that the Prussian emperor himself called it a 'showing off'. It was meant to more than rival other grand palaces of the era, such as Versailles. It certainly does. Most people remember the 'Grotto hall' very vividly as it a very unusual and somewhat kitsch part of the ground floor. Designed Carl von Gontard, the walls embedded with shells, stones, marble, quartz and semi-precious stones, they were enriched in the nineteenth century. The stunning marble floor...

Join the Crowds in Bavaria

by DanielF

The Free State of Bavaria is largest Bundesland in Germany. It is indeed larger than the Republic of Ireland and more than twice the size of Belgium. With a fierce spirit of independence and considered as a conservative bastion in Germany, this is one of the regions of the country where traditions are best preserved. During local festivals (of which the famous Oktoberfest in Munich is only the most obvious), many people still wear proudly their traditional costumes, including the famous Lederhosen, and drink immoderate amounts of some of the best beers brewed in the world (Bavaria has the highest rate of beer consumption in the world). In terms of scenery, Bavaria is also one of the most varied parts of Germany. It includes the scenic German Alps, with the highest summits in the country (Zugspitze, Watzmann), the pristine pre-Alpine lakes and the valleys of the Danube and Main rivers....

Hanau

by MichaelFalk1969

Though heavily destroyed in WW2, Hanau retains several attractions that appeal to any visitor: The magnificent ducal palace, a famous doll museum, the park "Wilhelmsbad", and the historic game park "Alte Fasanerie". In the summer months, a fairy tale festival draws many visitors (the Brothers Grimm used to live here).

Heppenheim

by MichaelFalk1969

Heppenheim is one of my favourite spots in Germany, a little Odenwald village somehow off the beaten path but with many attractions. The historic market place with half timbered houses all around the Old Town Hall is a real gem, as are many historic houses throughout the Old Town core. The neo-classical church St. Peter is so huge for a town of this size that it was called the "Odenwald Cathedral". From the market place you have a fine view on the castle Starkenburg - you can hike or drive up there and enjoy a wonderful vista over Heppenheim and the Odenwald-Bergstrasse region. The castle itself though (now a youth hostel) is only a ruin. Another attraction is the "Laternenpfad" - street lamps all over the city depicting tales from Hessian folk lore, especially nice when seen illuminated in the evening. The guided tours along the "Laternenpfad" are highly recommended though I`m not sure...

Lorsch

by MichaelFalk1969

Lorsch is famous for its carolingian gate hall, one of the oldest historic buildings in Germany, dating back to the age of Charlemagne. The gate hall is also entrance to the remnants of a Benedictine monastery with a herb garden. The half-timbered Old Town Hall is also worthwhile seeing. Be aware though that there is not much else to see in Lorsch - so best include it in a daytrip combined with the towns of Heppenheim and Michelstadt in the vicinity.

Tip Photo
Michelstadt

by MichaelFalk1969

Michelstadt is a village in the Odenwald region with an exceptionally pretty historic Old Town, the most remarkable feature being the half-timbered Old Town Hall. Some remnants of the city fortifications and the dry moat are also left, for example the "Diebsturm" where thieves were incarcerated.

Itineraries in Germany

by DanielF

Germany is a middle-sized country by European standards, with a slightly smaller area than Japan or Montana. With coasts both on the Baltic and North Seas, some of the most famous European river valleys, tenths of interesting cities, uncountable fairy-tale towns, and the pristine scenery of the Alps, it is easy to understand that not everything can be covered in one single trip, even if the mobility is ensured by an excellent transportation network. There are a several tourist routes crossing the country in all directions and catering for different kinds of interest: local breweries, half-timbered towns, scenic roads, fairy tales, industrial sites… However, since I visit frequently, I tend to never plan my leisure trips in Germany and we let us be led by our whims. It always works out well, as attractions are very close by and, unless there are conventions or trade shows, it is almost...

Travel in the Sunniest Side of Germany

by DanielF

The Bundesland Baden-Württemberg occupies most of the historical region of Swabia, in the southwest of Germany and was created in 1952 by merging two former independent entities within the German Empire: the Grand Duchy of Baden and the Kingdom of Württemberg, which included the Principality of Hohenzollern. This is considered to be the sunniest part of Germany, although Winters are as harsh as in the rest of the country.Baden-Württemberg is one of the wealthiest areas of the country, with a very dynamic economy, and is seat to several of the flagships of the German industry, including Mercedes-Benz. Not in vain, this is the land where cars where invented. However, beyond its industrial muscle, Baden-Württemberg is filled with first-class tourist attractions which include scenic natural areas like the Black Forest and the Lake Constance, pleasant old towns (Freiburg, Ulm, Tübingen,...
