Cathedral of St. Hedwig, Berlin
Cathedral of St. Hedwig (Sankt-Hedwigs-Kathedrale in German) is a prominent Roman Catholic cathedral located at Bebelplatz along the famous Unter den Linden in the heart of the city of Berlin. It was the first Roman catholic church to be built in Berlin. It is the seat of archbishop of Berlin although it attained the status of cathedral only in 1930.Cathedral of St. Hedwig was designed by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff, the same architect who designed the Staatsoper located just in front of the cathedral (as depicted on our photograph above). The cathedral was constructed during the reign of King Frederick II to dedicate to Saint Hedwig of Andechs in the middle of the 18th century so that Roman Catholic Silesian immigrants had a place to worship.
