Pfaueninsel

by Ewa208

If you are anywhere near Pfaueninsel, or the island of the peacocks, do visit it. It's one of my favorite ways of spending the sunny mornings, just strolling and having a coffee at the cafe of the dock. The ticket will cost you only 2 euros and you can stay as long as you like. There are some medieval towers, well preserved and a zoo in the middle of the island. I found the rose garden adorable and that blue house absolutely beautiful. One of the most pintoresque places I've ever visited.

King Ludwig II Palace

by hellojnewman

One of King Ludwig II palaces. He built this to resemble the Versailles. Much smaller but a lot of grandeur. Part of the bus tour out of Munich when going to Neuschwanstein Castle. Beautiful locationa with great views. The water fountains around the grounds do not run during the winter months.

Rathaus in Munich

by hellojnewman

Munich's town hall ( Rathaus) is located on Marienplatz, as is the famous Glockenspiel. Beautiful architecure. Very suprising that everything around here has only been recently built since the end of WWII. Everyday at 11am and 12pm in the winter months and 11am, 12pm and 5pm in the summer months the Glockenspiel starts to chime. The life-sized statues rotate around each other in a mock dance.

Essen: Museum Folkwang

by MichaelFalk1969

The Folkwang Museum is one of the most renowned art collections in Germany since 1902. The excellent permanent art collection features mainly German and French painters from the 19th century and some contemporary artists. Highly interesting, with regular temporary exhibitions as well. Update: The museum is closed in 2007 due to renovation and will reopen in 2008. Best check the museum homepage for the reopening date.

Essen: Villa Hügel

by MichaelFalk1969

Essen is a city in the Ruhr area mainly known as a industrial centre, yet there are some worthwhile destinations here: The "Villa Hügel" is the palace-like home of the Krupp dynasty, steel magnates and weapon producers in the 19th/20th century (the company still exists). They were extremely succesful in their business and spend part of their wealth on the social welfare of their workers and the improvement of their city. The building is interesting, with some neo-classical ornaments like sphinxes. It is located in a beautiful, lush "English" landscape garden. Sometimes the Villa Hügel houses temporary art exhibitions, usually excellent - apart from that, there is a permanent exhibition on the Krupp dynasty.

Bonn

by Sjalen

The former West German capital of Bonn has been left to find another administrative role for itself now that most of the governmental offices have moved to Berlin following the reunification of Germany. This it has been quite succesful with, as UN offices and others have relocated here and I have to say I would not mind working here myself for a while with an international crowd and yet in a pleasantly small city easy to grasp. Often in the shadow of much larger Cologne just a short hop north, Bonn is in fact just as interesting with ancient history shown amongst other places at the Rheinische Landesmuseum with its Neanderthal man, as well as in the cathedral which is said to be the oldest Rhineland church still in use. On top of all this, it is the birthplace of Beethoven, a fact used and abused by the city's tourist council and business and you see his name popping up everywhere but...

Passau

by Sjalen

Right on the Austrian border lies Passau, and you might pass it if your plan is to visit southern Central Europe from Germany. If so, you should definately stop for a while to explore a city at a fascinating river junction where you can go on boat trips on the Danube into Austria but also shorter local trips on the rivers Inn and Ilz. You will also be spoilt with one of the nicest cathedrals I have seen in Germany, especially its ceiling with its decorations, and which was once more important than the St Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna. This is a city which feels almost Austrian rather than German but you can walk across a bridge and you've changed country so that's hardly surprising. The Old Town clings on its peninsula between the rivers and it's just such a great setting - you can see that in the pictures on my Passau page.

Technical Museum Speyer

by MichaelFalk1969

This technical museum in the historic city of Speyer has lots of oldtimer cars, aircraft, trains and military vehicles on display. The main attraction is a life-size Lufthansa passenger aircraft you can actually visit via a staircase. What I liked best here was an extensive collection of fire engines. Compared to the similar Technical Museum in Sinsheim (less than half an hour distant), the Speyer museum has less military vehicles - apart from that, they are very much the same.

Tip Photo
Technical Museum Sinsheim

by MichaelFalk1969

Two similar technical museums exist in the cities of Sinsheim and Speyer, full with oldtimers, racing cars, trains, aircraft and military vehicles. As the cities are less than 30 minutes drive apart, it is possible to see both in a day. The museum in Sinsheim is slightly bigger and features a life-size Concorde and a similar Tupolev aircraft. You can actually visit those aircrafts and other smaller aircrafts. The museum in Speyer - though smaller - has the advantage that Speyer is a tourist attraction in itself, while in Sinsheim you have only the museum. Both museums feature IMAX cinemas.

Aachen - the 9th century capital of Europe

by JREllison

Aachen, or Aix-la-Chapelle as it was know then, was the favorite residence for Charlamegn, but if your looking for him you won't find a lot in his home town. True, he did design the Catherdral and begin the construction and is even burried there, but this Frankish emperor of the Holy Roman Empire is not remembered or revered as he is in France. Aachen is a great little city to visit even without Charlemagne, the Catherderal is beautiful and is the oldest in Northern Europe.Aachen is distinguishes itself by its historical sights, cultural attractions, big events such as the international dressage, jumping and riding tournament and museums as well as the town's many economic and scientific functions
