Let us not forget!
On a cloudy somber day we stopped at the Dachau concentration camp in the city of Dachau near Munich. It is fitting that this place of horrors is maintained to remind us of what man is capable of doing to his fellow man.

The small town of Walsrode in Northern Germany has a beautiful zoological garden dedicated exclusively to birds. There are ca. 5000 birds of all species to see in Walsrode. There are open-air-enclosures for the larger species like ostriches and pelicans, and aviaries for the smaller birdlife. The best thing in Walsrode in my opinion are the walkthough-aviaries, especially the large Indonesian aviary, and the owl castle. You find Walsrode one hour south of Hamburg, exit Walsrode on motorway A7. It is well sign-posted from there (Vogelpark).

Each year the Ice World attracts many winter visitors to Lübeck. It is a temporary exhibition of ice and snow sculptures and usually theme-orientated. The animal sculptures from the photo are from the 2005-exhibition. Great fun! Lübeck has many other attractions, including the historic Holstentor, hanseatic red-brick architecture, the Thomas Mann-house, the magnificent cathedral and churches, and marzipan, but the best time to visit Lübeck is surely in december. There also is a historic Christmas market.Update 2007: There was a rumour that the "Ice World" will close due to lack of visitors. Now it seems that the "Iceworld" will still take place in 2007/2008, beginning with 7.12.2007! In the summer, there is also the similar "Sandworld Festival" a few kilometers outside Lübeck.

Hamburg is my new home. It is one of the biggest cities of Germany with a population of about 2 Mio. Hamburg is famous for its big port, where ships from all over the world come. I love the atmosphere of the port with its big containerships and the smell of the ocean in the air.. Hamburg belongs to the main attractions for foreigners in Germany, so the city is full of tourists. For more see my Hamburg-page!

The Germanisches Nationalmuseum or German National Museum, is one of the great museums in the country. The museum is dedicated solely to the arts and culture of this great nation. This makes for a remarkably varied and rich collection of painting, sculpture, decorative and folk arts. Unfortunately during my visit I was somewhat rushed as I was having one of those "attempting to do too much" that tourist sometimes have. This means that I decided to skip some of the sections of the museum that I have little sincere interest in such as folk art. I was impressed by the archeological exhibits which is where I started my visit. This contains dioramas of prehistoric life in Germany and exhibits displaying important Bronze age works like the "Golden Cone". Another personal highlight during my visit was the superb collection of Renaissance art that is on display. This includes works by Durer,...

Stuttgart is the capital of the state of Baden-Württemberg in southern Germany and the sixth-largest city in Germany.Among the annual festivals that this city has to offer are - the Summer Festival, the Stuttgart Wine Village, the Cannstatt Beer Festival and the Stuttgart Christmas Market.

Munich is Germany’s third-largest city and when I was there many years before the fall of the Berlin Wall it was dubbed the “unofficial capital of the country”.There is more to Munich than its two best-known industries, beer and BMW. Its parks, palaces, museums and opera house make it a top tourist spot in Germany, its people also cherish their folk customs, notably the wearing of Bavarian alpine costume.

Kempten is on the Iller River, in the Allgäu. It is the centre of a dairy region and is widely known for its cheeses. Among the city's manufactures are textiles, paper, and beer. Of Celtic origin, Kempten became a flourishing Roman colony called Cambodunum. Kempten passed to Bavaria in 1803.

Düsseldorf is the capital city of the German Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia and is situated on the River Rhine. It is home to the seat of government and the Königsallee, one of the most beautiful German shopping avenues. The enchanting Altstadt (Old Town) is known as the world's longest bar!

The area known as Berchtesgadener Land enjoys an excellent climate. The town is set in beautiful Alpine scenery at the foot of the Watzmann, which is Germany's second highest peak. Berchtesgaden is also known worldwide for its Kehlsteinhaus, also known as Hitler's Eagle's Nest.
