Monschau

by MichaelFalk1969

Monschau (Eifel) is one of my favourite small cities in Germany: Athmospheric, densely filled with half-timbered houses, with an impressive castle overlooking the town, located in a valley gorge. In 2005 the town church was under reconstruction - the whole church dome had to be taken down and currently stands in front of the church.

Biergarten in Munich

by Freja1981

Sun, beer and more beer..this is everyday for the people living in Munich, that is if they go to one of the many biergartens around the city. The best one is in the center of town, The English Garden(Englischen garten) around the Chinesische Turm. Here you can bring your own food or buy some of the local spezialities and there is SO much beer to be tasted! Each of the many breweries in Munich have their own biergarten and see if you can try some of them..They seat 7000 people but in the summer it can still be hard to find a seat!

Bernkastel-Kues

by MichaelFalk1969

Bernkastel-Kues is a tiny village on a river bend of the Mosel. The market square of the suburb Bernkastel (Kues on the other side of the Mosel is the rather modern part) with its fountain and ensemble of half-timbered houses is a gem. A interesting piece of architecture is the "Schmales Haus" named so because the house front is extremely narrow. Above the city, the castle ruin Landshut allows a fantastic view on the river Mosel. The only downside: Bernkastel can be crowded as it is a deservedly popular destination. Nevertheless a must-see halfday-trip in my opinion.

Mosel Valley

by MichaelFalk1969

The Mosel river is a tributary of the Rhine and a region of great beauty with interesting sights. The river gorge is dotted with vineyards and castle ruins, and along the way - between historic Trier and the rather unimpressive city of Koblenz - are many pretty vine villages such as Traben-Trarbach or Bernkastel-Kues. A hiking path goes parallel to the river through a lovely landscape. The best view on the Mosel valley - as seen in the photo - is from the castle ruin Burg Landshut above Bernkastel-Kues.

Gorlitz - more than an outpost

by iandsmith

In 1071, someone wrote something somewhere about Gorlitz. This means it has a documented history of nearly 1,000 years. In the town itself you can trace much of that history, certainly from the 14th century, as many of the buildings are in a good state of preservation and they plan to keep them that way.You can trace how it became part of the Upper Lasatian Six City League in 1346 due to its prosperity as a trading town based on cloth. All the way through the dissolution of the League in 1815 and the city's partition after WWII. It's all there, come and see for yourself. Its location on the most direct route from Paris to Russia didn't hurt it either, but that has a new twist, with the borders about to be free again it may well open the place up to a mini boom in tourism.

Helgoland

by MichaelFalk1969

Helgoland is the only German island located on the high sea/ocean - all other islands are part of coastal waters. It is extremely tiny, only 1 square kilometer. The British swapped Helgoland against the African island Sansibar (then under the influence of Germany) in the 19th century. After WW2, the locals where evacuated, and there was even a try to bomb the island into the north sea in the 50`s. In 1952 people where allowed to settle again on Helgoland. It is now mainly a destination for daytrips. You can walk around the island, admire the rugged coastline and see the natural landmark of Helgoland, a single reddish stone pillar called "Lange Anna".

Xanten - Oldtown

by MichaelFalk1969

Xanten - a former roman province town (Colonia Ulpia Trajanis) in the Lower Rhine area near the German-Dutch Border - has a nice historic Old Town. Some visible remnants of the city history are the Kleve Town Gate (Klever Tor), the Cathedral, the "Gotische Haus" and several other merchant houses in renaissance style, and a windmill (Kriemhildmühle). The Roman Archaeological Park is in walking distance from the city: The main attractions there are a partly rebuilt arena, a temple and a roman "taverna" with roman baths and a working restaurant, and parts of the fortifications.

Tip Photo
Schwäbisch Hall

by MichaelFalk1969

A stunning historic city roughly 1 hour northeast from Stuttgart. Schwäbisch Hall ("Hall" derives from the celtic word for "salt") grew rich through salt trade in the middle ages and was able to retain its independence within the medieval German Empire as a free city. It has a lovely historic Old Town, with the historic market square as the centerpiece. This square is framed by the romanic-gothic church St. Michael, with 54 steps leading towards the church, renaissance, half-timbered and baroque houses and the Old Town Hall. Near Schwäbisch Hall lies the impressive monastery Grosscomburg and the romanic castle Kleincomburg.

Motor racing on the public road...

by sourbugger

The 'Nurburgring', the most impressive motor racing circuit on the planet. Once famously described as 'the Green Hell', it winds itself around 30 odd kms around the Eifel mountains. It's history stretches way back into the 1920's and some of it is still used as an F1 circuit. What really draws me to the place is the fact that when it's not being used for racing or car testing the full circuit is opened as a one-way toll road. No speed limits, although your insurance won't pay up if you have a prang. Sounds great, but remember that anyone can take any motorised vehicle around. You might meet a bunch of wrinklies going around on a coach, or some nutter making his crappy 1 litre Nissan Micra scream for mercy. One lap costs around 20 Euro, although ambulances are extra.Of course, Germany is also famout for its 'autobahns'. It is a myth that they are completely de-restricted. Many sections do...
