Stuttgart

by MichaelFalk1969

Stuttgart is home to the most appreciated german export good: Mercedes cars (now: Daimler-Chrysler, though it has not the same ring to it)! Though no spectacular city in my opinion, it features a few interesting sights/museums and offers good shopping opportunities: - "Altes Schloss" and "Neues Schloss" (palaces) - only the "Altes Schloss" is open to the public (it houses a history museum)- the "Staatsgalerie" (art museum)- the Wilhelma Zoo & Botanical Garden- a musical theatre and entertainment centre in Stuttgart-Sindelfingen - the Hegelhaus (home of the german philosopher Hegel)- the Mercedes-Benz-Museum in Bad Cannstatt- the Porsche-Museum in Zuffenhausen

Munich

by MichaelFalk1969

Munich is often regarded as the most attractive, yet also "the most expensive city to live in" in Germany. It is an economic boomtown and its sights and museums draw many national and international tourists, as does the location near the Alps and Austria. Stay at least three days in Munich - it can easily occupy you for a week! What to do and see in Munich: - The main square is the "Marienplatz" opposite the gothic Town Hall. Munich has plenty of magnificent churches, the most famous being the Frauenkirche, the Theatiner Church, the Asam Church and the church St. Michael. - The most remarkable baroque palace within the city limits is "Schloss Nymphenburg", with extensive gardens. The Wittelsbach "Residenz" is the royal city palace.- You will find beautiful neo-classical buildings all over the city, usually along the four main boulevards Brienner Strasse (leading to...

Lake Königssee

by MichaelFalk1969

The Königssee is located in most south-eastern tip of Bavaria, part of the National Park Berchtesgaden. The almost fjord-like lake scenery has great natural beauty and is perfect for hiking. For hiking, though, you have to take one of the electronic ferries to reach either St. Bartholomä with a beautiful little church at the ferry point (one of the most photgraphed sights in Germany) or - better - the ferry point Salet Alm, starting point to the Untersee Lake - hike and a impressive waterfall (roughly 3 hours return trip). Remember the time the last ferry leaves (usually around 6:00/6:30 p.m.).

Good job the door didn't come from IKEA

by sourbugger

Wittenburg is another charming llittle town in what was East Germany - South of Berlin. If it wasn't for a certain Martin Luther, it would have probably have remained a sleeply little non-entity of a place to this day. The Reformation sprang from Luther deciding to nail his 95 theses to the doors of the church there in 1517. Not such an unusual act in itself - notices of happening in the university were routinely posted here. I kind of wonder what it competed with ? The freshers's ball ? the Rowing club dinner notices ? who knows. The effect led to the deep divisions of Western Christianity, wars, persection, the toppling of monarchies and civil wars. History would have been a different affair if during this 'sliding door' moment. What if he had just thought "Oh sod it, i'll just have a few beers with the boys and oggle that sexy new nun that's just arrived".The famous doors were damaged...

Pole vaulters practice area

by sourbugger

The Berlin wall was probably the defining symbol of the iron curtain that descended after the Second world war across Europe. Many of us would perhaps cite the crumbling of the wall in 1990 as one of those defining moments in history. Little thought was given at the time as to what to do with all those lumps of concrete the GDR had spent years erecting, maintaining and guarding with especially nice and fluffy border guards.Much of it quickly disappeared, providing a gaping slash across the city that has now been pretty much filled with new buildings - transforming the city once again.Despite some half-hearted moves to save the remaining sections as a UNESCO world heritage site, half a dozen of so sections have been preserved. Most of these have been taken over a as parkland areas with new murals or re-created ones. One section of just over half a mile, provides a clearer idea of what it...

Moated Castles - Münsterland

by MichaelFalk1969

The Münsterland area is densely filled with moated castles, usually in smaller towns off the beaten path, so prepare yourself with a good roadmap. Some are open to the public, most are not - though it is still possible to admire them from the outside and take good photos. The best-known is Schloss Nordkirchen in Nordkirchen. The palace itself is not open to the public, but the park and garden is. It is nicknamed "Little Versailles" Also worthwhile: Castle Vischering in Lüdinghausen, Schloss Westerwinkel in Ascheberg, Schloss Raesfeld in Raesfeld (near Dorsten). Other castles: Bürg Hülshoff/Havixbeck, Schloss Darfeld and Schloss Varlar/Rosendahl, Schloss Buldern/Dülmen. If you go by car, it is possible to combine the visit of several castles in a day, as usually there are a few castles concentrated in a rather small area. For more detailed information on these castles, see my Münster-page...

Bach's last tune...

by sourbugger

Leipzig is thriving city located in the former Eastern Germany. It's most famous former resident was without a doubt a one Mr J. S Bach. He worked as a choirmaster for many years here. The St Thomas church is very light and airy with a very high roof that is oulined in a very striking red paint.Bach's tomb lies in the middle of the chancel, often adorned with fresh flowers. It seems somewhat ironic that the city that employed him, overworked and underpaid him is now enjoying the benefits of the thousands of people who come here to see the church and listen to Bach's music.

Dresden - Pheonix from the ashes

by sourbugger

Dresden was virtually destroyed in a conflagaration caused by the RAF towards the end of WW2. Whatever the rights and wrongs of that action, the reconstruction of the city's majot landmarks is a stunning achievement.Even more ambitious as a re-construction project than the Zwinger, the opera house and other city landmarks is the attempt to rebuild the Cathedral to it's pre-war glories before it's obliteration in February 1945. The communist goverment of the GDR left it in ruins as a symbol of British aggression, but attitudes changed following the re-unification of Germany.A British charity called the Dresden Trust collected donations from the general public in Britain to pay for some of the reconstruction costs of the cathedral. Dresden Trust chairman Alan Russell was quoted as saying :"It's a very important symbol of German-British reconciliation,""The fact that it's come from the...

Kronberg - Taunus

by MichaelFalk1969

Kronberg is a village in the Taunus region near Frankfurt and a worthwhile half-day-trip if you happen to be in Frankfurt am Main. It has a very nice old town with plenty of half-timbered houses and a medieval castle; great view from the ramparts on the town and the Frankfurt skyline, good weather provided. The main protestant church of Kronberg has multiple paintings and should not be missed either.

On the banks of the Rhine !

by sourbugger

The town of Koblenz was bordered in history on two sides of a triangle by the rivers of the Mosel and the Rhine, and on the other by city walls. Koblenz has been fortunate in keeping it's old town in tact. Although the city walls have gone to make way for the 'new town', it is still a relative term. Really modern stuff has thankfully been banished to the outskirts of town with just a few pimples of modernity intruding into the historic core. The compact old-town is a pleasing mixture of squares, museums, tiled roofs, cobbles and frescos that just shouts 'German stereotype'. It is almost as if it had been planned as a disney film-set with a pied piper leading the boys and girls through the streets whilst gingerbread men sing from behind wooden latticed windows. The 'plan' inparticular, the main square is a very aesthetically pleasing place to be, none more so than during the Christmas...
