Reeperbahn - BAZOOMAS !

by sourbugger

Hamburg has long been seen as a 'sin city' where sailors could empty their wallets into the willing hands of local bar owners and whores. These days the sailors have little time in port, so the whole tawdry show is aimed more at tourists and locals who are looking for a little spice. The main 'Reeperbahn' is a broad street (Broad street, geddit ?) packed with pubs, strip joints, lap-dancing clubs, a casino, peep shows, sex shops and the like. If you have been to the Pigalle in Paris, then you will know what I mean. Rather oddly the street features more mundane shopping experiences - such a Lidl. They still stick to selling cheap cans of tuna and bog roll, rather than having 'specials' on Dildos and vibrators. The word 'reeper' means 'Rope' and although no rope is manufactured here anymore, it would still seem to be in use for activities unrelated to seafaring.Just off the main street lies...

Marksburg - Rhine Valley

by MichaelFalk1969

The impressive Marksburg is the oldest undestroyed castle of the Rhine Gorge and worth a visit. Just do not linger in the totally unimpressive town of Braubach, which is only good as a base to hike up the castle, or up the Kestert Plateau, where you have a good view on the castle, the Rhine and some vineyards.

Gehry-Buildings - Düsseldorf

by MichaelFalk1969

Düsseldorf is a nice city to live in, with lots of restaurants, cafes, bars, parks, but for the occasional traveller, there are not many "obvious" big sights (such as the Cathedral in neighboring Cologne, for example). Not many old buildings are left due to WW2-bombings, but some interesting modern architecture. A notable exception are the three Gehry-Buildings by architect Frank Gehry with their unusual forms, sometimes round, sometimes edgy, each made from different building materials and with different colours. Their location is at the "Medienhafen/Neuer Zollhof", a 5-minutes-cab-drive from the central railstation. Worth a look if you are already in town.

Mühlenhof Open Air Museum in Münster

by MichaelFalk1969

The Mühlenhof is a small open air museum in Münster, located near the Aasee-Lake in the vicinity of the Münster Zoo. It has several farmstead buildings with interior plus a windmill. The guided tours are led by a "Kiepenkerl", a nice fellow clad in a blue skirt typical for the Münster region. In former times, they were smalltown tradesmen, wandering from town to town and selling goods from their backpack (called "Kiepe").

Münster

by MichaelFalk1969

Münster is a charming, "medium-sized" historic city in West Germany. The historic significance of Münster lies mainly in the fact that the peace treaty that ended the 30years War in Germany (1618-48) was signed in the Old Town Hall in Münster (open to the public and worth the visit). More sights: - The Old Town has been reconstructed after many buildings were lost in WW2. Around the "Prinzipalmarkt", you will find beautiful renaissance merchant houses. - The St. Pauls cathedral is impressive and houses a giant astronomical clock. - The Lamberti church in the Old Town has three iron cages dangling from its bell tower - three leaders of a popular religious movement against the archbishop of Münster were displayed in those cages after the uprising was defeated. - The baroque St. Clemens church- Münster has a university, housed mainly in the baroque palace of the local archbishop. A...

Rhine Valley

by MichaelFalk1969

The Middle Rhine Valley has recently been declared a UNESCO world heritage site, and deservedly so. The river Rhine - set in a spectacular natural scenery - is dotted with medieval castles and cozy whine villages (like Bacharach) with half timbered houses all along its course. The best way to experience is to hike the "Rheinsteig", the "Rheinhöhenweg" or the "Rheinburgenwanderweg", popular hiking paths that run roughly parallel to the river course and allow spectacular views on the Rhine Valley. You get a pretty good impression of a beautiful stretch of the Rhine by hiking the route between Castle Rheinfels in St. Goar via the village of Biedernheim to Oberwesel (the path is marked with a red icon all along). Many Rheinsteig-hikes are one-way in the sense that you can leave your car at your starting point and return by train. The only setback of the Rhine Valley is that it can be crowded...

Rhine Castles

by MichaelFalk1969

The Rhine Valley was a much disputed region in the middle ages, and the many scenic castles and ruins testify for this fact. Most of them are open to the public. There is a popular hiking path called "Rheinburgenwanderweg" which allows the best views on the different castles. Just to name a few examples: The extensive ruins of Castle Rheinfels in St. Goar allow you views on two other castles on the opposite river valley as well. An unusual castle is Castle Pfalzgrafenstein, built right in the middle of the river.

Schloss Bellevue

by wlightfoot

Schloss Bellevue is a château in the centre of Berlin. It is situated on the north edge of the Tiergarten park, beside the Spree, near the Berlin Victory Column, with the address "Spreeweg 1". It has been the principal residence of the German President since 1994. Its name derives from its beautiful view over the Spree.
