More on Checkpoint Charlie

by wlightfoot

Checkpoint Charlie – A must see if you are in Berlin! It is said that the American authorities, not wanting to concede that the division of Germany might be anything other than a temporary aberration, never erected any permanent buildings, and made do with the iconic wooden shed shown below.

98 metres above the ground

by annase

This Gothic masterpiece is so well known and I have heard so much about that I wanted to go Cologne because of it (Well, we also got a great one off January deal: €20 return from Brussels). The Cologne Cathedral, dedicated to Saints Peter and Mary, is probably the most amazing building in the whole of Germany. It is the only building in Cologne that outstanding cultural value that has survived World War II. Ever since its completion in the late 19th century it has been the city's undisputable landmark. Its main facade with the twin towers is the largest facade in the world. The cathedral itself is 144 m long and 86 m wide. The two towers reach the height of 157 m, making the cathedral as the second-tallest Gothic structure in the world. Only the tower of the Ulm Cathedral is higher (161.5 m). The construction of this magnificent cathedral began in 1248 and took more than 600 years. It...

Chocolate museum in Cologne

by annase

On my trip to Cologne in January 2006, me and a bunch of friends went to a chocolate museum. Initially we were a bit uninterested, but having been there I must say that it was a truly amazing experience. We were in town for a weekend and we had been clubbing the night before. Two of us actually stayed until the club closed, so you can imagine we were feeling a bit rough. Spending a Sunday afternoon in a chocolate factory was such a fun thing to do! There was loads of interesting info about the process of chocolate making from the beginning to an end, history of its origins, where cocoa beans are being cultivated and where they processed and so on. To be brutally honest, I had no idea, it is actually an extremely complicated process. I was thinking "how on earth did they know to put so much effort into it in the early days". In addition, the exhibition reveals you quite a lot about the...

Mainau island gardens

by annase

Mainau is an island in Lake Constance has well maintained gardens with beautiful views on the lake. The island is owned by the Lennart Bernadotte Foundation, an entity created by the late Count Bernadotte af Wisborg, formerly a Prince of Sweden and Duke of Småland. The gardens on the island include roses garden, herb garden, garden full of various different butterflies, garden of fragrances, a tropical greenhouse and an arboretum. In addition, there are several distinctive areas that display water features such as the “Arena of Fountains” with the Mediterranean feel to it. It has palm trees, agaves, bougainvilleas and several different cypresses. Another display of lovely flower arrangements is the “Italian Renaissance garden” which includes granite cascade in the centre of it. Water runs down the steps which also have various floral arrangements on them in every spring and summer. The...

Hiedleberg

by JREllison

Heidleberg was the last stop of our two week trip. The castle and the Karl-Theodor Bridge were both worth the stop. But, what we remember the best was that it was the first game of the World Cup and even though Germany won the game everybody was having a great time. The Karl-Theodor Bridge, bordered by two Baroque towers one of which holds several dungeon cells, was once part of the town fortification. The stone bridge finished in 1788 spans the Neckar River.

Probably the oldest city in Germany

by JREllison

Trier is located on the Moselle River, near the Luxembourg border. Among the city's Roman monuments are the Porta Nigra (Black Gate.) which was built in the 4th century. The day we got here was market day. We explored both the Roman Gate (open to the public and full of roman arches) and the market.

A quick stop in Cologne

by JREllison

We only had a couple of hours for Cologne, probably the greatest injustice of our trip. The city is the fourth largest in Germany. The catherdral was damaged in WWII but the reconstruction is complete and not noticable. The living statues on the catherdral square were very interesting. Drop a tip in their bucket before taking a photo.

Stuttgard city center

by JREllison

Stuttgard was founded sometime around 900 as a horse farm, or stud farm. Durning WWII the center of the city was almost completly destroyed by allied bombers. The rubble from the destroyed city center was trucked to the north side of the city and dumped in a mound. Today that mound has been covered and planted and can be seen as you approach the city from the north. Some of the damaged buildings have been restored, or rebuilt, allowing us to enjoy the castle, some churches and other buildings. With much of the center cleared there was room to build modern stores - which can also be enjoyed.Other sites in or near Stuttgard are the Mercedez Benz Museum, and Esslingen am Neckar.

Marienplatz

by JREllison

Marienplatz is the heart of the city of Munich and the New City Hall is the center of the platrz. The New City Hall was built during the last 15 or so years of the 19th century but appears to be much older. At 11:00, 12:00 and 15:00 PM each day the famous Glockenspiel figures perform. The Old Town Hall is still on the Platz as well as the Mariensäule, a large column at the center of the square also known as the column of St. Mary. Near the Old Town Hall is a small fountain known as the Fischbrunnen or Fish Fountain.During our first vist to the Marienplatz several years ago the squre was filled with street entertainers, but this last time it was a rain out. There are many shops and other attractions on the Platz.

Rügen

by MichaelFalk1969

Rügen Island is a lovely island in the Baltic Sea, off the north-east German coast. The island is connected to the mainland by bridge and ferry; the starting point for all travels to Rügen is usually the historic city of Stralsund, itself wortwhile seeing. Rügens main attraction is nature. A natural wonder are the chalk cliffs off the east coast of Rügen, best seen by a cruise. Cruises start from the harbour of Sassnitz. You can also walk atop the cliffs though the National Park Jasmund, but the view from the Baltic is better. Also very beautiful are the many alley roads in the rural areas and the neighbouring island Hiddensee to the west of Rügen. Rügen has a number of popular historic sea resorts, the most important being Binz and Sellin. Binz has a pretty seaside boulevard, and Selling features the "Seebrückenhaus", a historic art noveau - building built into the Baltic Sea now home...
