Lübeck

by MichaelFalk1969

The attractive hanseatic city of Lübeck has many sights, including - the historic Holstentor (red-brick towngate), - typical hanseatic merchant houses- the Thomas Mann-house- the magnificent cathedral and churches- and above all: MARZIPAN (check the "Niederegger" Lübecker Marzipan-store)- in the summer months: the "Sand World" in neighboring Travemünde (sand sculptures)- and in Dezember the historic Christmas market.

The Cologne Cathedral.

by Paul2001

The Cologne Cathedral is one of the most awe-inspiring cathedrals in all of Europe. It is the largest Gothic church in Germany and seems all the larger because of its location on top of a small hill in the city centre. The cathedral spires dominate the skyline of Cologne especially from the opposite side of the Rhine. At onetime the spires were the tallest man-made structures in the world. Construction began on the cathedral in 1248 but was halted in the beginning of the 16th century because of financial reasons. In 1823 construction resumed and was completed in 1880. Upon entering the cathedral is hard not to be overwhelmed with the and the overall size of the structure and the vaulted ceilings. For this reason one can easily overlook some of the important artworks inside of the cathedral. The include the stunning 16th century stain-glassed windows and The Shrine of the Three Magi,...

An educational and fun trip to Germany

by gatusigirl

Spend time in the museums and visit the ancient castles. Look at the countryside construction, there are things standing from eons ago. Take pictures. Sample the food (eat your way thru the Schwartzwald!) All the little towns have breweries and Wineskellers. Walk and hike to see the place up close and personable. Stay in the little B&B. hostels aren't bad but if you are >30 you might not like the noise. Travel by train and boat. Ladies: casual slacks and skirts, a long skirt for dinner and shows.

Amusement Park

by kapsig1295

There is an amusement park right next to the Rhine river and not to far from the zoo. It appeared to be open quite late. It was really cheap to get in less then ten euro and even had a small roller coaster. You do how ever have to buy ride stamps.

Cuckoo for Cuckoo Clocks!

by hollykate

I would definitely recommend checking out a traditional German cuckoo clock shop. I stopped in one in the Black Forest, and it was one of my favorite places I visited in Europe! It's fun to wait around for the hour to strike and the clocks to work their magic. It's pretty cool, but what's even neater is that you can purchase your own cuckoo clock to have at home! Now who wouldn't want their own cuckoo clock from Germany? I had mine delivered by mail, and I surprised my parents by a new addition to their living room. It's nice to hear the little bird chirp on the hour and be reminded of my memorable trip to the Black Forest. Tf you get the chance, check out a cuckoo clock shop. I think you'll be surprised by how fun they can be!

Colditz !

by sourbugger

Only 40 miles from Dresden, lies the delightful little town. It may be relatively unknown in Germany itself, but the castle is known to millions in Britain and elsewhere through many books and films. The castle served as a high-security prisoner of war camp, housing prisoners (mainly airmen) who had already escaped from elsewhere. The tales of tunnels, disguises and deceptions are known to legions of schoolboys.I visited the place a few years back, and was imprssed by the 'Escape Museum' and the guided tour of parts of the castle. The ingenuity of these guys was amazing. When Colditz was finally relieved, the incomeing troops were amazed to find an almost ready glider built in the attic area of the castle - and it would have flown if the opportunity presented itself !The town itself is also worth a couple of hours if you are in the area.

Echte Schlaferla Rauchbier Bamberg

You got to take a trip to Bamberg, it is a beautifull place. And the Thirsty traveller from Travel Channel's visited the brewery aswell. This beer tastes nothing like anything you've ever tasted before. Be sure to take some bottles and glasses with you home, as they are great souvenirs.

Fulda : a lovely little town

by Fabriano

As I live in a very large metropolitan area, I like spending my vacation time in small, quiet towns. Fulda is it. A lovable town, with beautiful baroque monuments, lost among the green hills of Eastern Hesse. Nothing gorgeous, but worth seeing. Before the Berlin Wall fell, Fulda lay a few miles away from the border with GDR. It was the first town reachable by the Russian tanks !!! Now it's located in central Germany. It was an independant city, governed by prince - abbots. These left their mark on the town's configuration : a Baroque Church, and above all, the Palace where they ruled the Principality, built in the early 18th century. The picture is the main room of the Palace.During my sojourn there, there were many people, due to the (Catholic) World Youth Day. I spoke with Italian people (I can speak Italian fluently) and with French Canadian people. I laughed a lot with the latter, they...

Roemer Square

by Fabriano

I visited the Jewish Museum. But the thing that interested me was the town hall. Inside, there's the room where German Emperors were elected, with a gallery of all German Emperors. They call it "painting", even if it's quite ugly. The only interest is historical ; you have the names of all emperors, as if you had all US Presidents at Mount Rushmore. On the pictures, you have the stairs to walk up to this room, and a sight of the Roemerplatz. On the latter picture you can see people from the Chinese sect Falungong. I'd like to do away with their religious stuff !Note that Goethe, the most famous German writer, was born in Francfort in 1749. I read Faust and Werther. I didn't visit his birth house.I went to the municipal museum and saw the map of Francfort completely destroyed after the Allied bombed it during World War II. Brrrr...

Eisenach

by Fabriano

Eisenach is a little town nesteld in a valley in Thuringia, "Germany's Perigord" in some way. Two characters of uppermost interest for German history, I named Luther and Bach, lived there. They left an unforgettable print still today.Luther was kinda "wilful prisoner" in the Wartburg fortress, where he translated the Bible into German. You can visit the room where he did it (a fine hideout to be in !!!). One can see a gallery with all his life painted in a naïve way. There's also his house downtown.Bach was born here but his talent broke out elseplace. He went and visited Buxtehude in Lübeck and got changed by attending the lessons of this musical mastermind. He spent the second part of his life in Leipzig, where you can visit a "Bach Haus" and the churches where he performed the "premières" of many of his masses (for instance the Matthew Passion). To end the visit of his house, a man in...
