Television Tower, Berlin

by hopang

Berlin Television Tower (Fernsehturm in German) is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city of Berlin and has attracted millions of foreign and local tourists every year. It is located very near to Alexander Platz and can be seen from many parts of the city. TV Tower was designed by Hermann Henselmann and was completed in 1969 during the cold war by East German authority as an important symbol of Berlin. It is the tallest structure in Germany with a height of slightly less than 370 meter high. There is an observation deck at 204 meter high with a restaurant just above. Opening hours are between 9.00 a.m. and midnight daily during the summer months. The view from the observation deck is equally amazing during the day as well as during the night. Entrance fee is 11.00 euros per adult. Don't miss Berlin Television Tower when you visit Berlin on your vacation!

Berliner Dom, Berlin

by hopang

Berlin Cathedral (Berliner Dom in German) is located at Lustgarten in Museum Island which was designated as world heritage site by UNESCO in 1999. It is certainly one of the most impressive cathedrals in mainland Europe! We understand that it is a Lutheran church in neo renaissance style of architecture and it has never been the seat of a bishop before. The cathedral was consecrated as early as the middle of the 15th century. The present building was designed by Julius and Otto Raschdorff and constructed in the late 19th century. The cathedral is approximately 110 meter long, 70 meter wide and 110 meter high. It is undoubtedly one of the most famous landmarks in the city. We did not have the opportunity to visit the interior of the cathedral as we spent most of our time inside the five impressive museums at Museum Island. We hope not to miss the Berlin Cathedral on our next trip to...

Checkpoint Charlie, Berlin

by hopang

Checkpoint Charlie is one of the most famous crossings between East and West Berlin. There were several of them. The other best known crossings were Checkpoint A (Alpha) and Checkpoint B (Bravo). Checkpoint Charlie is of course derived from the letter C. The city of Berlin was divided for 28 years during the cold war from the year 1961 to the year 1989. The original guard house was removed in 1990 after the fall of Berlin Wall and is now placed at the Allied Museum. The guard house as you can see today is a replica as an added tourist attraction. The famous signboard (as depicted in our third photograph) is also a replica. As you can see from these photographs, these "soldiers" are collecting 2.00 euros for a souvenir snapshot. Most foreign tourists don't mind paying as it is a small sum! Wonder if this is a tourist trap as these "soldiers" are really making a fortune!

It is rather a temple-like building on its facade with monumental staircase on the outside. The building was severely damaged during World War II, renovated and re-opened to the public in 2001.It is home to 19th century paintings including masterpieces by Paul Cézanne, Claude Monet, Auguste Rodin, Adolf Menzel and Auguste Renoir. The museum is wheelchair accessible. Photography is allowed without flashlight and tripod. Opening hours are between 10.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m. daily except Monday which is closed and Thursday is extended to 10.00 p.m. Entrance fee is 10.00 euros per adult and 5.00 euros...
