Hamburg

by MichaelFalk1969

Hamburg is a city state with a long merchant and maritime tradition. The only downside is that the weather is usually drizzling (:-). Hamburg has suffered heavily from bombings in WW2, so many old buildings are forever lost, nevertheless in the rich parts of Hamburg you will find many impressive 19th-century villas. What to do when in Hamburg: - Old Town Hall- take a guided tour through the harbour- the "Speicherstadt", a historic ensemble of red brickstone-warehouses, now housing several interesting museums (like the Hamburg "dungeon" or the electric toy train museum)- the suburb of Blankenese with old thatched-roof captain`s houses)- the "Michel" church (St. Michaelis)- the Hagenbeck Zoo- parks like "Planten un Blomen" with old greenhouses- the park-like Ohlsdorf Main Cemetery with impressive grave monuments- the Kunsthalle (art museum) and other interesting museums

Harz

by MichaelFalk1969

The Harz is a region of midsize mountains, hills, forests and historic mining towns with plenty of hiking options. Location: roughly central northern germany, between the former border of West- and East Germany. The Harz mountains are famous in local folk tales as it was said that they were the meeting places of witches. What do do when in the Harz mountains: - visit the historic Old Towns of Wernigerode, Goslar, Quedlinburg, Stolberg- hike on the many paths through the Harz mountains (I especially recommend the Bodetal, or the way up to the "Brocken" summit); prepare yourself with a good hiking mapWernigerode is a good base for exploring the Harz; I recommend the Hotel "Schlossberghotel".

Heidelberg

by Sjalen

I could just as well have put this under "tourist traps" as the tourist flow here is incredible, with shop signs in Japanese and plenty of Americans visiting relatives at the nearby army base. Why I didn't? Because Heidelberg still manages to charm you due to the Neckar Valley position and with its impressive castle and university traditions, it is a city with lots to see and do in and where people come to study and have fun alike. Unlike smaller "fairytale towns" this still feels like a working city, even though the tourists along Hauptstrasse are plenty.

Bremen

by MichaelFalk1969

Bremen was once very affluent as a an independent merchant city state and member of the medieval Hanseatic League. That was long ago, though the mercantile tradition and former glory still shows. What do to when in Bremen: - admire the architecture: - the Old Town Hall- the nearby Schütting, a magnificent Patrician residence- and the "Stadtwaage", a well-preserved merchant house - near the Old Town Hall you find the most prominent Bremen monuments, the "Roland" (a medieval knight symbolizing the independence of many merchant cities) and the "Bremer Stadtmusikanten" (animals from a fairy tale of the Brothers Grimm). - the pretty Old Town quarter of "Schnoor" with lots of art shops- the "Überseemuseum" (ethnological museum)- the St. Petri Cathedral

Hamburg

by Sjalen

One of Germany's biggest and richest cities, Hamburg too is a lot funnier than you think. Its northern climate is perhaps the only off-putting thing compared to more southern parts of Germany, but here you have a city that even the Beatles knew was lively at night and during the day there are plenty of museums and shopping to keep you occupied if you are not like me, more interested in the huge harbour with its modern canal architecture and so on.

Düsseldorf

by Sjalen

Düsseldorf might at first strike you as boring and full of modern concrete and whilst you're not wrong there, it has so much more in my opinion, not least the Media Hafen with its Guery architecture and the TV tower. There is also the Old town full of great bars serving the local "Alt" beer. The capital of Northrhine-Westphalia is one of those cities where you scratch the surface to find that you want to see more underneath.

Speyer

by Sjalen

The World Heritage cathedral at Speyer is what the town is famous for in the world and it is quite an impressive structure with its crypt full of royal tombs and its huge ceiling. But there is more to this city along the banks of the Rhine. A Technical Museum which is one of the best I have ever visited and including a Boeing 747 which you can walk on the wings of, high up in the air (see second picture), is nothing but awesome! There is also a regional museum with the treasures of the cathedral as well as other archaeological finds from this area with all its Celtic and Roman history. On top of this, you are on the fringe of several German wine districts so it is a great base for food and drink too.

Berchtesgaden...

by rubbersoul75

..and Berchtesgadener Land.OK, Bavaria is the "best" area of Germany. Well then what's the best place to visit in Bavaria? For us, it's the region around Berchtesgaden. The area offers hiking with stunning views, History with Hitlers Eagles Nest, lakes, mountians.. all in Peaceful, majestic, clean, setting. It did'nt hurt that we've had perfect weather on our trips here.Konigsee is Germanys highest lake and reaches a depth of 616 feet. Spend at least part of a day with a boat trip on the lake and a meal on the shore. In the town of Berchtegaden, don't miss the unique tour of the Salzbergwerk (salt mine). Hop in the train that takes you almost 1 mk intothe mountain. Down in the mountian you can ride the "slides" used by miners to get from one level to another; also included is a boatride on an underground lake. The church in Ramsau (see photo) appears in most appears in many a Germany...

It takes a while to see anyplace worth while....

by civilmagistrate

While in München, Check out all of the historical places. It was a staging ground for the stormtroopers before the war. Most of the rallies in the 30Äs were taking place there. There is so many historical churches and places that are a must see. Cathedral Church of Our Lady, Theatinerkirche (St. Kajetan), St.-Johann-Nepomuk-Kirche (Asam-Kirche), New town hall (Neues Rathaus),Carillon (Glockenspiel),Bavarian State Opera Haus and Ruhmeshalle.Don't forget Andechs Monastery !! Located on the Holy Mountain above the eastern shore of Lake Ammersee in the middle of Upper Bavaria’s Five-Lakes Region, Andechs Monastery is easily visible from far away. For more than half a millennium it has been a cherished destination for pilgrims. Not to mention one of the best beers around with its brewery, Bräustüberl.
