Holocaust Memorial, Berlin

by hopang

Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe (Denkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas in German) or simply Holocaust Memorial is located at Ebertstrasse just south of the famous Brandenburg Gate in the heart of the city of Berlin. It was designed by Eisenman Architects and was constructed in the early 21st century. It has an area of almost 20,000 square metres or almost 5 acres and contains not less than 2,700 free standing concrete slabs. Entrance to the Memorial is free. However it is a favourite playground for children!

Brandenburg Gate, Berlin

by hopang

Brandenburger Tor (Brandenbeurg Gate) is located at Pariser Platz at the junction of Unter den Linden and Ebertstrasse. It is a symbol of the city of Berlin and the most famous tourist attraction in the city. Brandenburg Gate is the only remaining city gate in the city of Berlin. All other city gates had been demolished long ago. The Gate was constructed by Carl Gotthard Langhans in the late 18th century during the reign of King Frederik William II of Prussia. It attracts millions of foreign tourists every year. It is also a favourite meeting place for the locals. A tourist information office is located at the southern section of the Gate.

Nueues Museum, Berlin

by hopang

Neues Museum (New Museum in English) is located in the Museum Island which was designated as world heritage site by UNESCO. It is home to several sections such as the popular Egyptian Museum and Papyrus Collection, Museum of Prehistory and Early History and artifacts from the Collection of Classical Antiquities. The museum was designed by architect Friedrich August Stüler and was constructed in the middle of the 19th century. It was destroyed during the Second World War and redesigned and rebuilt by David Chipperfield. The most famous attraction in the museum is the Egyptian 1340 bc Bust of Nefertiti. Unfortunately we are not allowed to take any photographs of this famous attraction! Entrance fee to the museum is 10.00 euros per adult and 5.00 euros for students. Opening hours are between 10.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m. from Sunday to Wednesday and between 10.00 a.m. and 8.00 p.m. from Thursday...

Rhein river romance: the fireworks

by Trekki

Fireworks have a specific magic. No one can possibly elude the luminous transient colourful pictures in the sky. But the fireworks in Middle Rhein Valley are extra special. Maybe because then the valley unfolds its undoubtedly romantic nature best. Throughout the year five of these fireworks, called “Rhein in Flammen” (Rhein in flames), are being displayed between the cities of Koblenz and Bingen. Since years I am watching especially the one in Bingen on TV but it needed dear Dee and hubby to make me go and see this with my own eyes. Luckily Burg Rheinstein (Rheinstein Castle) is open during this event since 2011. Since I like this castle very much because of the loving way the owners have restored it and care for it, we decided to watch the beginning of the fireworks from there. The castle is located high on the valley slope and that made it the perfect location. And no TV can ever...

Mönchengladbach

by grayfo

The original name of the city was Gladbach, which formed grew up around a Benedictine abbey founded in 972 and dissolved in 1802.To distinguish the town from another town of the same name (the present Bergisch-Gladbach) it took the name München-Gladbach in 1888. This spelling often misled people to think that Gladbach was a borough of Munich (München), and so the name was changed to Mönchen Gladbach in 1950 and Mönchengladbach in 1960.February 2009

Open Air Museum Hagen

by MichaelFalk1969

Hagen - though a rather ugly city - features an excellent open air museum with ensembles of pretty half-timbered houses, where reenactors perform old crafts and now almost extinct professions like horsesmith. I particularly liked the demonstration of the Gutenberg printing press with movable letters.

Leipzig

by MichaelFalk1969

Leipzig has always been a commercial crossroads, and at the same time a fertile ground for music (Bach, Mendelssohn-Bartholdy) and literature (the book fair; the publishers Brockhaus and Reclam; Goethe`s "Faust"). Also, coffee houses are abundant here - a very typical feature of Leipzig. More recently, Leipzig gained the respect of the world as the cradle of the peaceful revolution in Germany in 1989, where the "peace prayers" held each monday in the Nikolai Church devoloped into a mass protest against the communist regime, starting a chain of events which finally toppled the regime. A few suggestions for a day in Leipzig: - get a glimpse of the huge Central Railway Station - one of the most modern in Europe- visit a concert of the Thomaner-choir Fr. 6 p.m. or Saturday 3 p.m., and admire the stained-glass window with the likeness of composer Bach- visit the beautiful Nikolai church,...

Nürnberg

by MichaelFalk1969

There rarely is a city with more historical significance in Germany than Nürnberg: The rich indepent merchant city of the Middle Ages with trade connections all - over Europe, and a vibrant, innovative art "scene" (Albrecht Dürer, Veit Stoss, Hans Sachs) sponsored by the immensely rich city patricians, represents the more romantic image of Nürnberg. In a more recent, darker phase of its history, the Nazis favoured Nürnberg as the city of their propagandistic mass events, held at the "Reichsparteitagsgelände". Nürnberg was then reduced to rubble in World War 2 bombings. Despite this, Nürnberg has saved much of its heritage and is to this day a fascinating showcase into the Middle Ages. The Kaiserburg, the medieval churches, the treasures of the "Germanisches Nationalmuseum", the Dürerhaus, the picturesque views of the Spital building and the architectural ensemble around the "Henkersteg"...

This is one more beautiful place that I didn't explore as I would like, because time was short. To complete the frustration, the flash betrayed me in pictures, and I had serious trouble to find the way out of the city - all highways were mentioned except... the one that I needed. Bad memories, to eliminate in a new visit!

Celle (Hannover Area)

by alza

I spent a half-day walking around the Old Town in Celle, where I had a delicious lunch before driving on to Hamburg through the Lüneburge Heide. I wasn't planning on creating a separate page for it since I didn't have that much practical information.However... there an Introduction to Celle that is stuck in my mind since I first saw this beautiful town and I can't fit it in a general Germany page... (in fact, general country pages no longer work for me and I'll have to rethink the structure of my pages.)So this to say that I built a separate Celle page sometime around April 2011 -- where I finally got to say what I wanted in my Introduction! :)
