Romantic night tour at Rheinstein Castle

by Trekki

Of all the castles along Rhein river (or middle Rhein river between Bingen and Koblenz) I like Rheinstein Castle most. Already the view from the boat or the opposite river side is so majestic. It looks exactly like the castle of my childhood imaginations. When I was doing a bit of research on the castles I found that Rheinstein Castle offers many special tours which definitely stick out of the typical castle tours. They also allow to take photos of all castle ground and the interiors. In addition to special child-oriented tours on summer Sundays they offer a so-called “Long night of Rheinstein”, where the castle is open to visitors until midnight and they offer a special night tour in the months of April, May, September and October. These tours start just a bit after dusk at the foot of the castle (parking lot). The castle lord himself awaited us with torches and we all marched up the...

In Marburg, the University Church

by alza

University Church in Marburg is in a stunning position on the way to Marburg Castle -- and for that, it made a strong impression on me. I arrived late afternoon and ran from the Youth Hostel along the river to the Old City, so I could see the town before dark. I turned onto a lively street leading towards the castle, half-timbered houses over my head and the church surging up from them. Too late for photos already so I kept walking towards the castle in the Upper City. The climb got rather steep (seems worse when you run.) I think the church bells rang as I made my way through a maze of narrow, winding streets. A bit mysterious along the way and then, a beautiful moment upon reaching the top.Previously, I had mistakenly called this church by another name. Thanks to a VT Friend for informing me that my picture represents University Church. It's wasn't my intention to write about it but...

Rheinland-Pfalz: Mainz

by antistar

At over 2000 years old Mainz is one of Germany's oldest cities by far, and has an amazing history stretching all the way back to Roman times. It became the most important city of the Church of Northern Europe during the 8th century, celebrated by the building of the magnificent cathedral starting in 10th century. Most significantly of all, at least for me, Mainz was where the Information Age was first conceived. Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press and made possible the mass production of books, an act that would change the face of the Western world forever. You can now even see the very first Gutenberg Bible in the vaults of the Gutenberg Museum after the city bought them all back from an American collectors for a tidy sum. This vast history is evidenced all about the city, despite war damage, and you can find pockets of medieval buildings and vestiges of Roman artefacts all...

Rheinland-Pfalz: Trier

by antistar

Trier is easily one of the highlights of any trip to Germany, and so it's no surprise that it pulls in the tourist hoards. Formed as Augusta Treverorum by the Romans after the Gaul campaign sent the once friendly Treveri tribe across the Mosel to their Germanic brothers. It became a balwark of the Roman empire, a city at the edge facing out to the barbarian tribes that would one day become the empire's downfall. The Romans left a hefty footprint. The small town has a highly concentrated collection of Roman ruins, some of which are incredibly well preserved, including one of the enormous main gates, the amphitheatre, and the impressive underground complex of the old baths. In addition, the prestige that came with being such an important Roman city meant that it retained much of that prestige throughout the centuries. That legacy has left a host of fantastic buildings and landmarks, all...

Old Town Castle

by posejc

The old Fort - or the Nurnberg Walled City - is a must - there are fine restaurants all around where you can eat and dine true german food - and off course Beer and Wine. Its a treat to be sitting on top of the castle and view a town that has existed since the 600 AD - and more I am sure - Bavaria hosts a myriad of castle and old towns throughout the Bavarian Country site - the german people are friendly and always willing to have you partake of their beer and local wineries - pride of workmanship and taste is paramount - they know how to party!.. and work!..hard but fun is always present - and the memories of old are never forgotten and they are always a place to see - a party to visit - and people willing to partake of their lives and show you how the real germany is all about!.

Nationalpark Untere Oder

by MichaelFalk1969

The National Park Untere Oder is a reserve which follows stretch of the Oder River along the boundary of Germany and Poland. This area is known for seasonal flooding, marshlands, and as a transit place for migrating birds, especially herons and swans, who come here in large numbers in September and October each year. The National Park administration offers guided birding tours during peak migration times. The best way to explore is by bycicle; the park has plenty of cycling routes. A good base for exploring the National Park would be the town of Schwedt (ca. 1 hour from Berlin by train).

Berlin Zoo

by travelgirl78

The Berlin Zoo is one of the best in the world. It is easy to get to on the subway, has a large variety of animals, and is beautifully landscaped. It is a very relaxing way to spend a day or just a few hours in Berlin. There are themed tours of the zoo and also feeding times where you can see the animals being fed. It is not too expensive and you can bring the kids of course. There are gift shops and a cafe for dining. It is the oldest zoo in Germany, and it claims that it is home to the largest number of species of any zoo in the world.

Marksburg in Braubach is the only medieval castle in the area of the Middle-Rhine, that was almost not changed or adapted afterwards and it also was never destoyed.Marksburg is the seat of the so-called "Deutsche Burgenvereinigung" (German castle assosiation) and holds a big library with a total of 12000 books. The castle is 150 meters above the Rhine and you will be able to drive up by car or take a small road-train from Braubach, a lovely village that is also worth a visit !The castle is open for visitors daily 10.00a.m.-05.00p.m. and photography inside the castle is allowed !

St.Goarshausen : Burg Katz & Maus

by globetrott

St.Goarshausen with 2 great castles will be another highlight of a cruise through the Rhine-valley. St.Goarshausen is opposite of St.Goarand close to the famous Loreley-rock. In St.Goarshausen you will see some old towers, that are remains of the medieval townwall, and high above the village is Burg Katz, dating back to the year 1370. The castle was destroyed by Napoleon in 1806 and reconstructed again at the end of the 19th century.Nowadays you may not visit the castle, because it is owned by the German ministry of finances and used for the recreation of their employees. The name "Katz" (cat) comes from the count of Katzenelnbogen, who owned quite a lot of castles along the Rhine. Opposite of Burg Katz, in a distance of maybe 1000 meters you will see Burg Maus (mouse).Tourists will be able to visit it, BUT only in order to see performances of eagles and falcons flying high above the...
