Koln south terrase

by speed4turtles

In the 1970s, Koln was the pioneer in the development and purchase of the Stadtbahn-B car and set about introducing high-level platforms on its extensive tramway system with the ultimate aim of converting the network to something resembling a full metro. Tunnel building began in earnest and trams virtually disappeared from the city centre's streets, but the scale of the task was so great that it became clear that traditional tram alignments would dominate much of the network for a much longer time than expected. Several series of Stadtbahn-B cars were delivered, and the design incorporated retractable steps to allow the cars to call at street level platforms. By the late 1990s, the number of sets delivered was still insufficient to replace all of Koln's traditional 8-axle trams, with the result that high level platforms could not be installed on many routes, including all the city centre...

The bridge

by speed4turtles

The local Koln Alt beer was good, as was the spinach pizza, which I had never tried before but seem to be pretty popular there. Try what’s known as Fracula, which is beer with strawberries at the bottom of the glass. Another gastric delight is the ice cafe; it is generally held by the locals that the best ice cafes are the ones owned by the Italians (or so I am told.) The ice cream is perhaps the best I’ve had, though some would consider it a bit on the rich side. Try the Spaghetti (pronounced Shbah-get-ti ) Ice, with the ice cream extruded like noodles, strawberry sauce and grated white chocolate for cheese. yahoo yahoo yahoo

Dom and Rathausruins by night

by speed4turtles

Visitors can ascend the south tower of the Dom, which affords a good view of the city and the bridges across the Rhine River. Of course, it also affords a view of the damage done to the marble of the cathedral by years of acidic rain and tourists who can’t resist scratching their initials into the stone. yahoo yahoo yahoo

Koln and innercity

by speed4turtles

Koln is probably best known for Kolner Dom, an impressive stone cathedral done in the Gothic style which was one of the more interesting cathedrals that I had seen while in Europe. There is also the Museen Der Stadt Koln museum located adjacent to the Dom, which was also enjoyable. After the museum, I felt compelled to stand out front for about 25 minutes waiting for the top of the hour to approach, as across the street from the Dom is the Restaurant Alt Koln, which features an ornate and elaborate animated clock with mechanized figures that come out of the recesses and strike gongs or parade with trumpets raised across small verandahs that bracket the clock. yahoo yahoo yahoo

Koln Rhine bank

by speed4turtles

Koln is situated on the banks of the Rhine River in west central Germany. It is an old city with a rich history and a lot of examples of earlier architecture that survive WWII intact. I have to admit that the city exudes a somewhat drab and industrial feeling to the casual observer, though I’m sure the gray skies and continual drizzle contributed greatly to that impression. yahoo yahoo yahoo

The Festung Ehrenbreitstein

by Paul2001

The Festung Ehrenbreitstein is one of the largest fortresses in the entire world. That said, it is really not all that interesting unless you find really thick brick walls. However I recommend that you still make a trip to Ehrenbreitstein whether you find such fortifications interesting or not. I think that most people will be delighted by views which you can appreciate from a cafe by the fortress's battlements. The fortress itself was originally a Residenz for the local Electors. In the early part of the 19th century it was converted into a massive fortress inorder to defend the Rhine and Mosel crossing by the French. The battlements were amongst the thickest in the world and made to withstand the most powerful cannons of the 19th century. The fortress itself sits about 400 feet above the Rhine River. Oddly enough the fortress was never put to test as the French never did invade Germany...

The Egyptian Museum

by Kate-Me

Since we would be in Berlin, when we got there, we first headed straight for....the Egyptian Museum!!Why? Because that's where the bust of the most famous Egyptian Queen of all time, Nefertiti is, and being into all things Egyptian, we just had to see her. The collection is nowhere near as vast and impressive as in London's British Museum, but it is very interesting nevertheless and contains some smaller, interesting, often simple relics which the British Museum doesn't have.

The Brandenburg Gate

by Kate-Me

As we were going to be near the Eastern regions of Germany, seeing the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin was really a must see for us.Not only because it seems to us like a sign of free Germany now, but also just because it's so well known and so often seen in movies and on tv, and we wanted to see it for real.

The Wilhelma Zoo in Stuttgart

by Paul2001

Okay what do you do on a Monday in Stuttgart. All of the local and nearby museums and palaces are closed. Another reason for me to hate Mondays. So I decided to visit the acclaimed Wilhelma Zoo, considered to be one of the best zoos in Europe. Besides it was a short walk from my hotel too. Much to my surprise, I was impressed. The animals look nice and compfy with large enclosures where they can run around in. The grounds of the zoo are well maintained adn sculpted. There are excellent exhibits of birds, monkeys and other wildlife. Even more exciting, I got to see a tiger in heat. I highly recommend the Wilhelma Zoo if you are traveling to this part of Germany with children because I think that they will love it.
