Martin Luther's Memorial - Eisleben & Wittenberg

by Weissdorn

There is hardly any event which changed the face of Europe so dramatically as the Reformation of the Christian Church. In Eisleben and Wittenberg you can see where Martin Luther was born, lived and died in the years betwenn 1483 and 1546. It's well documented in the Luther House in Eisleben. In Wittenberg, the center of Luther's reformatic work, you can visit the castle church, where supposedly Martin Luther once nailed his list of complaints against the Roman Catholic Church. It's also the place where he and his friend and co-reformer, Philipp Melanchton are buried. In St. Mary's Church, where Luther started out as a preacher, you can see the world-famous altar built by the famous artists, the Cranach brothers. Luther often thought of this altar as an excellent example of being able to illustrate the bible for those who couldn't read. The Martin Luther Memorials in Eisleben and Wittenberg...

Heidelberg – overcrowded but charming

by Trekki

Oh well, Heidelberg… I am torn between placing this as tourist trap or to-see or even off path, but as so many VTers were thrilled during their recent sightseeing tour with our Jess, I simply don’t dare to list it as tourist trap. But be warned, it is full of people almost every time of the year. And if you really want to visit Heidelberg, please make sure that you also spend some time in the city itself and not only go to the castle. Or if you only go to the castle, please make sure that you also visit the German Pharmancy Museum, which is located inside the castle ground. A good option for sightseeing Heidelberg is to walk along the Philosophers’ walk, which is located opposite of the castle (on the northern bank of Neckar river). This gives you beautiful sights to the city and the castle as well. If you want to get inspired for some off path Heidelberg, please read what Christine.j...

Mannheim, much more than industrial city!

by Trekki

Sadly even amongst many Germans Mannheim is considered as an ugly industrial city, but this is definitely a perception which does not at all do justice to this beautiful city. Mannheim not “that” old in German terms, it only recently celebrated 400 years township, but it has a very magnificent castle, which was built by the electors Carl Philip and later on by Carl Theodor, which moved their seats from nearby Heidelberg. A majority of the castle is belonging to Mannheim’s university, but there is a publica part as well which can be visited. In the park in front of the castle often concerts are given (I attended one with famous Jose Carreras one day – oh joy!).But there is much more to discover in Mannheim. There is a Planetarium with many special sessions for kids, next to it is one of the most interesting museums about industrialisation (Landesmuseum für Arbeit und Technik) and the huge...

Lorsch and the King’s Hall (UNESCO heritage)

by Trekki

Lorsch is a tiny town in southern (state of) Hesse and most probably overlooked by many German and foreign tourists. At least I didn’t see much when I am here from time to time. But it is definitely worth a little detour, as it is home to one of the oldest remains of an abbey of early Medieval “Germany” (well, where todays’ Germany was part of).Lorsch Abbey was founded in 764 and soon became cultural and spiritual centre in the Carolingan empire. Today not much is left of the abbey but the beautiful King’s Hall (or entrance hall) is still there. Every source describes it as “the oldest and most beautiful monument of Franconian Romanesque” (this is as Wikipedia quotes it). I cannot judge, as I am not a history expert, but this building is really most magnificent. One can wander through the premises of the former abbey (excavations ongoing) and admire the old herbal gardens. Of course they...

Marvellous frescos, Martinskapelle, Bavaria

by Trekki

When I was travelling in Sweden this summer (2009) I was fascinated by the many old churches with beautifully painted interiors. Those days I thought that we don’t have these here in Germany, oh what a silly thought…. Yes, we have these overly decorated Rococo churches in southern Bavaria, but that's a complete different story. And then I found this gem of a church when I visited Miltenberg at Main river and was completely overwhelmed! That’s why I have put it high on my personal suggestions for a visit to Germany. The church is very old, it was built in 950 as a parish church in the easternmost part of diocese of Mainz. Due to the nearby quarry, stonemansons at Martinskapelle made and delivered sarcophagi and pillars to the cathedral builders’ societies at Rhein river and up to Denmark. The little church was expanded and the first paintings were completed in 14th century. Parts of...

Schwetzingen – Germany’s Versailles :-)

by Trekki

So you thought only France has Versailles? No, Schwetzingen also has a beautiful residential castle, which – due to its building history – has elements of Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo and Classicism. It was summer residence of Prince Electors Karl Philipp and Karl Theodor (17-18th century), and has recently been renovated to give access to all its wonderful buildings.Adjacent to the castle is a huge park, consisting of a French baroque garden and an English landscape garden. The whole park has a lot of small temples, fountains, artificial rivers, a lake, so that you can wander around and will always discover something new and exciting. Over the year, the park is very well taken care of, so each season has its typical face, which makes it a nice destination all year round. But it is not only the castle, what gives Schwetzingen its atmosphere, also the city, which stretches just outside of...

Eberbach Monastery- contemplation and beauty

by Trekki

Eberbach Monastery is quite known by the Germans living close by, but as it is nor UNESCO heritage site, it does not always get attention like Cologne and Berlin by (non-German) travellers.Well, why should you visit this gem ? First of all, it is one of the first abbeys of Cistercian Order, which have been founded in the Germany of 12th century. It was even founded by one of the most important and famous Cistercians - Bernhard of Clairvaux.Second, the abbey funds is quite famous for their vineyards; it is said they are the biggest wine-gowing estate of Germany. Wine auctions are held twice a year, offering old and good wine.Third, the abbey and the buildings are indeed beautiful, they provide a certain aura of quietness and contemplation. It can get crowded over weekends, but if you walk around in between the tour groups, you can have the rooms and church all for you alone. And - last but...

Worms – Nibelungs and Holy Roman Empire

by Trekki

Now how to “classify” Worms as a destination ? Is it more things-to-do or more off path ? But as I have decided to turn my tips upside down and lead you with “Things to do in Germany” more to the lesser known places, you find it here.Worms was of much importance during the Holy Roman Empire. A lot of disputes and decisions took place here, and it was also here, where Luther was banished from the church (with Worms Edict). The Imperial Cathedral holds treasures such as a baroque high choir by Balthasar Neumann and many other architectural delights. And of course, the Nibelungs ! Who likes old sagas and legends, will surely have heard of Siegfried and Kriemhild and sinister Hagen, who dumped the legendary gold treasure into the Rhine. It was (said to be) here, where most of the parts of Nibelung Saga did take place, and the city does its best to reveal all this on a walk through this nice...

Adorable, imperial - Speyer is a gem

by Trekki

When looking at the most popular places for Germany in VT travel guide, there is Trier, Cologne, Aachen - but Speyer, Mainz and Worms are missing. Which is sad, as not many German towns are loaded with so much European history as it is Speyer.Speyer was a very important town during Holy Roman Empire. Salian King Konrad II has initiated the construction of the Kaiserdom - Imperial Cathedral in 1030, which was the biggest church within the occident those days.Today, after several destructions, reconstructions and expansions, the Kaiserdom is still one of the most important and beautiful romanesque buildings in Germany, maybe even in Europe.8 Kings and Emperors of Holy Roman Empire have their burial ground here - did you know that ?(it is UNESCO listed, if this helps to decide for a visit :-)But Speyer does not only have the Cathedral, the town itself is beautiful as well, a lot of...
