Dachau Visit Guide

by unfistrife

Basically you go in bus to Dachau with a toursit guide, availablein english, but don't do this is a waste of 24 euro or some cause the guide give nice explanation about the site but she's so much on a hurray is just like.... you can't took picture when she explain and when she's done is just go go go to the next place. is the one offered at the tourist office in Munich. I said the best would be to go by yourself and just explore at your own without having a yoo short delay. You can reach the site by train/bus/car and if at the worst case you want to have some explanation just go near a guide and listen.

Pfand on beverage bottles

by merak

You have to be conscious that in Germany, on most types of beverage cans and bottles, you have to pay an additional amount which is given back to you returning it. Refund is possible in nearly any shop which sells that beverages, specially supermarkets. The most common sign now is a grey triangle placed directly above the barcode, but you can also see a circled P or the word "Mehrweg" on the label of a plastic bottle. Beer bottles of glass are worth 8 cent for returning, "Mehrweg" 15 cent. You may lose up to a quarter Euro if you throw the bottle away. There is a new kind of sports here in Germany, which is picking up cans and bottles. Danish orientalists may find the word afFANTi for them. So you may even be one of them or give just back the cans you have emptied (and payed refundable 25 cent in advance for!). "Kein (ohne) Pfand", the circled arrow.Prices where it is not to be read "+ __...

Zoo Duisburg

by MichaelFalk1969

Though I love visiting zoos, the Duisburg Zoo does keep some animals under conditions I do not approve. The worst example is an incredibly small Amazon Dolphin aquarium. Even the zoo officials admit the aquarium isn`t quite up to date. The zoo has improved over time, but in general I would advise against visiting this zoo.

The Dom in Wurzburg

by Paul2001

Although Wurzburg has many worthwhile attractions, the Dom is not one of them. The Dom was originally consecrated to St Kilian and had been one of the largest Romanesque churches in Germany. Unfortunately is was severely damaged by Allied aerial bombing towards the end of World War Two. All but the superstructure of the church was destroyed. The attempt to restore the Dom seems incomplete as most of the interior is whitewashed. This makes the church is not very atmospheric. The crypt does contain a museum of religious artefacts and there are many tombstones dedicated to various canons and prince-bishops. The Schönbornkapelle holding the remains of four bishops from the House of Schönborn and designed by Balthasar Neumann survived the war and is the Dom's main attraction.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber

by Sjalen

I didn't specifically go on holiday here - just chose to meet a friend here for a day whilst in Bavaria, as I was curious to see what all the fuss was about here on VT. No Germans I know ever talk about the place themselves and now I know why - it is one of the most un-German towns I have ever visited and I have seen a few. Don't get me wrong, you will get all the half timbered houses and prettyness you've come for, but nowhere do service staff speak German, only English or even Japanese. Moreover, the place is overrun with coaches and the shops sell nothing but Christmas things and teddy bears... Admire the gorgeous houses (see my Rothenburg page) which really are gorgeous. Visit a couple of the good museums such as the Medieval crime museum, walk the city walls and if you have an extra day, walk or bike through the pretty Tauber Valley below the town. I believe a trip to one of the...

Rüdesheim

by Sjalen

This is a town where tourists are EVERYWHERE. Worst is the famous Drosselgasse street with artificial German restaurants. However, nevertheless worth a visit if you can make it in spring for instance which makes it a lot more bearable. See my Rüdesheim page for more information. Swing above the vineyards in a cable car. There are plenty of alternatives. Just hop on a train or boat and go to another town downstream.

The Römisch-Germanisches Museum in Cologne

by Paul2001

The Römisch-Germanisches Museum in Cologne features extensive display of artifacts from the Roman occupation of this region of Germany. Perhaps I was somewhat jaded at this point having just visited the superior Archeological Museum in Trier but I was not all that impressed by this museum. Basically it is a very large collection of pottery, glassworks, weaponry, pins and decorative jewellary accumulated from the Rhine Valley however there was nothing here that I had not seen before and nothing that I found to be truely extraordinary. The exception might be the Dionysos-Mosaik, large a third century A.C. mosiac that was once the main floor of a Roman villa. The details of the mosiac are quite impressive and for many seeing this artifact will worth the price of admission. Another fault I found with the museum is that it is in a rather ugly late 20th century building. It has very few...

Oktoberfest in Munich

by Weissdorn

What started off as a celebration for the royal engagement of King Louis II of Bavaria has now turned into Bavaria's biggest business in the tourism branch. It's rumoured that the turnover here exceeds the GNP of other European countries, which means a party that only has one aim - to be a commercial success. It is very over-crowded and over-priced. You will wind up paying more for a beer here than anywhere else in Germany - and that based on the per liter price! These days getting a seat in one of the beer tents is liking winning in lotto! Ever since the Japanese business tourists have made it fashionable to reserve entire tents, most people spend the entire time waiting in lines to get in the tent. The last time I was here, I thought they should re-dub the Hacker-Pschorr tent the Diamler-Benz tent, and the HB tent the Hitachi tent. Really folks, although this is the famous biggie -...

Rothenburg ob der Tauber

by Weissdorn

Tourist Trap N° 3Wow! This place is such a tourist trap that it's one of the few towns in Germany that has translated their website into Japanese! Most likely Rothenburg ob der Tauber owes it's continuing worldwide fame, thanks the clever entrepeneur Käthe Wohlfahrt, who had the foresight in the late 70's to advertise in U.S. military publications, such as "Stars & Stripes" and "Off´Duty", and was one of the few souvenier shops that made a living from selling Christmas decorations year 'round. Christmas decorations are not something that Rothenburg is famous for - it's something Käthe Wohlfahrt is famous for. Most of the handmade decorations that used to come from the Erz Mountains in Saxony are now produced in the People's Republic of China. But Käthe's store hasn't suffered any dent in it's sentimental "cuteness" that all of the tourists gush over. Her enterprise has now sprawled out...

Heidelberg

by Weissdorn

This is tourist trap number two. To be honest with you, I haven't quite figured out what the real attraction here is. Maybe it was because Mark Twain was once here, or maybe because it's a convenient bus stop right in the middle of the way between Frankfurt/M and Munich, or maybe because "Daddy" or "Grandpa" once serve time in the Army here.It certainly can't because of the ruined castle, which was wasted in 1493 by the French during a royal family feud (not Allied bombing). There certainly isn't much to else see, other than the quaint "student" bars that students and other mortals can no longer afford to visit. Whatever it is that drives the North Americans and Japanese here in droves to photograph this town on the Neckar River, the city fathers are proud of it, and continue to apply more "cuteness" to the older part of town that was never there to start with. It sells well. The castle...
