Schloß Neuschwanstein

by Weissdorn

If you're from North America, most people will tell you that if you haven't been here, you haven't been to Germany. Most likely this castle was catapulted into fame by Walt Disney, who was looking for a free-standing model for Sleeping Beauty's castle, and this one hit him right smack between the eyes. Stunning, isn't it? The problem is, is that it's not really a castle - it's a more or less a chateau for the last estranged King of Bavaria, Louis II (Ludwig). It was constructed according to his private Wagnerian fantasies, and was the ultimate reason why Bavaria went bankrupt and was eventually forced to become a part of Germany. At least the Bavarians are getting their money back these days, by chasing tourists by the container shipload through this practically empty castle (Ludwig died before the palace was finished) at 9.00 € a pop in 15 minute intervals.Be prepared to stand in long...

One Rhine River cruise is enough!

by b1bob

When you take group tours under different tour companies two years in a row, there is a good chance you will see some of the same old sights. That happened to me on my senior trip in late June, 1987. I found out we were on the SAME Rhine River cruise from Boppard that we took the year before. Had I known beforehand it was the same cruise, I would have stayed at the hotel in Frankfurt, slept off a little jet lag, and been there on time to meet Stefan. I caught up on that sleep right there on the ferryboat as the enclosed photo shows. If you have been on more than one of these group tours of Europe, read the itinerary carefully. If sights overlap from the last one, tour guides are seldom big and strong enough to make you go. The old belly ache excuse works best for reasons I'll leave to your imagination.

Recycling System

by Leipzig

Germany has been the country with world's strictest environmental protection programs. Sooner or later you will see colored garbage container. If you throw your waste into the wrong container you'll be strictly fined by the "Ordnungsamt" (at least if they catch you in the act). What's the right container:brown container: brown bottles onlydark green container: green bottles onlywhite container: achromatic bottles onlyyellow container: plastic, synthetic meterials onlyblue container: paper and paperboard onlylight green container: food and biodegradable material only (no cooked food!)grey container: metalic products only under no circumstances throw batteries, cooked food, and liquid substances in such containersBring batteries to drugstores or supermarkets!Litter boxes at the market squares or at tram stations are for mixed garbage. You can throw in your cans, bottles, food and paper.

Don't drink and drive!

by Leipzig

Actually this tip should be as clear as daylight! Never drink and drive, because the German Police is really strict about that and they control it a lot! In case of causing an accident under the influence of alcohol you will be fined, lose your driver's license and in most cases you go to jail for several years!!! To avoid that, hands off of the alcohol!!! Take public transport or a taxi.

Do's and Dont's

by Leipzig

. Titles are also very important. In German language there are two ways to say you in singular form, Sie and Du. Sie is the formal form of you, and is used for people in businesses, people you don't know very well, and people that are older than you. Du is only used with family, close friends and children.Anyone that you would use the Sie form with is someone that you should use Mr. or Mrs. (Herr or Frau) with.To address someone with an academic title, you have to use this title before the name, i.e. Herr Professor Schmidt or Frau Doktor Mueller. In Germany handshaking ist customary - make eye contact with the person you're shaking hands with. Formal dress is required for some restaurants, the opera, theatre, casinos and important social functions. It is polite to wish others at your table Guten Appetit before you begin eating, and Prost! before drinking. When sitting at a...

Lindau Town Museum

by Paul2001

After the Wurttenberg State Museum in Stuttgart, I did not really need to see anymore folk and decorative arts. The whole place was kind of numbing and not very interesting at all. Basically it holds a collection of cultural arts that figured in the town of Lindau's history. It might interest people who have a very keen interest in such things but judging by the lack of visitors during my tour, I would have to guess that the numbers of such persons are few. If you still want to go here are the opening hours and cost of admission:April–Oct Tues–Sun 10am–noon & 2–5pm; DM5/€2.50 It is in a fine old building dating from the Renaissance. Wander around the lovely town of Lindau instead.

Reconstructed buildings

by mariquita

Do not believe your eyes all the time. Even if many buildings and towns look old, like they had been there for centuries, in many cases they are just reconstructions, as the country was almost completely bombed during the wars.

Neuschwanstein is arguably the...

by acemj

Neuschwanstein is arguably the most famous castle in the world, so of course it has become a bit of a tourist trap . . . but oh so worth the crowds. In fact, this is the castle that inspired Walt Disney. If you look at the Disney logo to this day, you will see a striking resemblance to Neuschwanstein.

Cochem and the Moselle Valley

by Paul2001

Yes the Moselle Valley is very beautiful but it is also grotesquely overtouristed. I found that the town of Cochem to be so crowded that it was depressing. If visiting the Moselle Valley there is one thing that you have to do for sure and that is visit the Burg Eltz north of Cochem. It is one of the few castles that was not destroyed by the French during the Palatine War of the late 17th century. I have a seperate tip about this wonderful sight in my Germany page Must-See section.
