BERLIN - The Soviet War Memorial

by silve64

Located near Berlin's Brandenburg Gate, the Soviet War Memorial appears to mirror both the Gate and a triumphal arch, though its purpose is more somber. This is the final resting place for more than 2,500 Soviet soldiers who died in World War II fighting against Nazi Germany. Rather than be a museum of artifacts, the monument is constructed from the artifacts of war. It is flanked by two T34 tanks, said to be the first to reach Berlin. The curved structure itself is created from marble taken from Adolph Hitler's Chancellery. At its focal point is a bronze statue of a Soviet solder holding a child in one hand and a sword smashing a Nazi swastika in the other. The stones from Hitler's Chancellery are engraved with the Soviet sickle-and-hammer design along with quotes from Stalin. The monument was guarded around the clock by the Red Army until German reunification.

BERLIN - The Brandenburg Gates

by silve64

The infamous Branderburg Gate, the point at which WWII was over. When the allies met up with the Russians (roughly at the gate), Germany was (by definition) non-existent. It remains a key point, as it is now seen as a gate to the "east", but nowadays more of an economic marker than a political one.

Pay Toilets

by brons17

In Germany you have to pay to use the public toilet facilities so always make sure that you carry extra change for your stops throught the day With a large family it could be quite expensive!!! HINT : if you are travelling on the trains make sure you go to the toilet before you leave the train as they are free on the train :))

Maximilian's in Munich - Just for Wannabes

by elbe

It's not only a Tourist Trap, also many Munich people think the Maximilian's is a good nightclub ;-) The Maximilian's is one of the "most difficult doors" in Munich - not everyone is wellcome. Beside this everything is very expensive because there are many celebreties (for example some of the players of FC Bayern München) and wannebe-celebreties. The place is decorated like a cheap smalltown-disco and the music is not that good. Don't go in ;-) (just if you're a young woman who wants to find an old, perhaps rich, man) Munich is full of alternatives, not difficult to find another and better place.

Museum and Art Galleries Opening hours

by brons17

If you are planning to visit them enquire first about opening times as I made a train trip on a monday to see the galleries in Cologne only to find they were all closed on a monday. I ended up finding the websites for the places and checked opening hours and also maps of how to get there and printed them out to take with me so it was much easier to get to places or even show someone if they didnt understand english

One thing which I felt was a waste of time was 'Martinspforte'. In the map of worms that you get, there is a picture of it as being an interesting sight to see. However, I thought it just looked like any other house in Germany...my advice, don't bother, just look at the buildings as you walk along the streets.

München isn't a tourist...

by miromi

München isn't a tourist trap--I think it's generally a beautiful, bustling city, and many people love it to death! but I wouldn't go out of my way to visit it again, and I wouldn't want to go for Oktoberfest. I just had so much more fun in the countryside and Berlin, but that's just me. I mean, it's your life, do what you want! I also haven't seen the Neuschwanstein castle yet, but I heard it's the tackiest thing on earth, and makes the Disney Cinderella castle look almost classy.

What is a tourist trap? A lot...

by juni_2002

What is a tourist trap? A lot of people say e.g. Neuschwanstein - I really like the fairy tale castles of King Ludwig and this one has never been finished - so of course you will notice it if you visit it - but I love it. The question is - what do you expect! (In fact in earlier times the entry fee was cheaper and the waiting time was less... but that would be my only complains about it).

by Willem_oa

Unfortunately, the magnificent Kõlner Dom has been turned into a crowded, tourist-infested museum. Instead of trying to worm your way inside, take a walk around the place and perhaps take a boat trip down the Rhine.

Frankfurt Christmas market,...

by Biotasha

Frankfurt Christmas market, it's far too overcrowded, you can hardly move and it's not that special, mostly food stalls.. If you want to go to a Christmas market the smaller ones nearby like in Wiesbaden or Mainz have much more Christmas atmosphere & you can relax & browse instead of being pushed around by the crowd and get beer spilled over you like in Frankfurt.
