S-bahn and U-bahn, Berlin

by hopang

Transportation system by S-bahn and U-bahn in the city of Berlin is very comprehensive and reliable and is certainly affordable. In our opinion, it is one of the best subway or metro systems in Europe. They are certainly quite easy to use. Network maps are available in most hotels and tourist information office. S-bahn and U-bahn have different operators but still under the same fare system. S-bahn is operated by S-Bahn Berlin GmbH which is a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn whereas U-bahn, an underground system, is operated by BVG. S-bahn has approximately 15 lines and U-bahn 10 lines.Travellers can purchase one day ticket at 6.00 euros per adult (zone ABC) or seven day ticket at 30.00 euros per adult (zone ABC). Single trip ticket costs just 2.10 euros which is valid for two hours. It is highly recommended to purchase Berlin Welcome Card plus Museum Island. A 72 hour card costs 36.00 euros...

Schwebefähre - a flying carpet for cars

by globetrott

The Schwebefaehre in Rendsburg works a bit like a flying carpet, taking cars quickly over the Kiel-Canal / Nordostsee-Kanal in Rendsburg. This interesting means of transportation is a car- and passengerferry that is not swimming, but it is hanging down on thick ropes from the bridge above and that way it can get across the Kielcanal within a very short time. This ferry dates back to the year 1913 and is 14 meters long and 6 meters wide, it will carry 4 ordinary cars or 1 large truck and plenty of pedestrians and cyclists / bikers at the same time.Schwebefaehre is in service daily from 5a.m. till 11p.m.every 15 minutes it will go at00 + 15 + 30 + 45 minutes after the full hour from South07 + 22 + 37 + 52 minutes after the full hour from NorthLike all the other ferries across the Kiel-Canal it is totally free of charge for cars and pedestrians, simply because the canal is artificial and...

Bahnhofsmission – Help In All Emergencies

by Kathrin_E

Every larger station has an office of the Bahnhofsmission (train station mission). The organisation was originally founded in the late 19th century to help young women who came into the big cities all alone to find work and often ended up in brothels. It is a joint venture of the protestant and catholic churches’ charity works (Caritas and Diakonie) and mostly financed by donations.Nowadays, they help everyone who is in trouble that exceeds the duties of train staff, no matter if it is a little problem like torn clothes or a big problem like a stolen wallet or being hassled by criminals. They support people who are sick, homeless, needy, lonely, suicidal. They come to the platform to help elderly or disabled passengers or kids travelling alone with their luggage and accompany them when boarding or changing trains (an appointment has to be made in advance for this service, which is...

TRAIN: Be sure to include +City transport

by Trekki

Despite many complaints from Germans who use trains to commute or travel, I really like to take the train for any distance outside of the town I live at. That’s why I have the so-called Bahncard 50, where I only pay 50% of the ticket price. This Bahncard is also available for non-residents, please see here for more and current information:Bahncard on German’s Bahn websiteThere is no need that I repeat writing about Deutsche Bahn (Germany’s train system), as Celeste (@Weissdorn) already has loads of very good and practical information about travel by train, so here only some brief additional information which might help you to save a bit of money when using the train service. If you have a minimum Bahncard 50 and travel more than 100 km with the train(s), then your ticket includes the local transport as well, provided it has been issued with the suffix “+City” (see photo). In my case I was...

Ländertickets

by christine.j

A good way to get around in Germany are the Ländertickets, train tickets which are valid in one of the German states. They are valid from 9 am on a weekday, all day Saturday or Sunday, for up to five people or a family, two adults and their (grand-) children under 15. Before starting your journey, write down your names on the ticket. These tickest are valid in local trains only,IRE, RE, RB and S-Bahn, in second class. Some of the cities also accept them for their public transport system, but this has to be checked for each of the cities. Some of the states also have a single Länderticket available. The price varies, depending on the state, but it's always a good deal. A single Baden-Württemberg ticket for example is 18 Euro, for five people it's 27 Euro. This ticket is also valid in the VRN area, which includes public transport of Heidelberg.

An easy way to discover Germany..

by Arial_27

I found getting around in Germany easy with the trains... they were very clean, comfortable, and reliable. I once got onto the wrong train and ended up way on the other end of the region, but it was a perfect way to discover the country! In order to travel between different provinces, you'll need to buy a seperate train pass for each province. Its somewhat pricey but not that bad. I paid about 30 Euros (and I can't remember if that was per month, or per two weeks) but I know i got good use out of it. There's no other way to travel Germany easy. You might find, if you're traveling long distances, there will be a lot of connecting rides. I remember my friend and I traveled from Stuttgard to Munich, we had to change trains about five times! So falling asleep on the trains definately isnt a good idea, as you will miss your stop. But I found the trains here to be very good with warning about...

The modern and comfortable Deutsche Bahn

by Colzy

Like the autobahns, the German rail system is extremely comprehensive. I may be generalising a little, but it can really take you anywhere you want to go in comfort (and no I don't work for the Deutsche Bahn in case you were wondering!)Basically, you can reach a major centre to another major cantre on a fast train or ICE (Inter City Train) which tend to be more expensive but as already mentioned, faster. For example, from where I live in Germany to Berlin is approx. 1hr on an ICE and approx. 2 1/2 hrs on a regional train. The ICE trains tend to have restaurants on board and you can reserve your seat in advance easily.Regional trains have the advantage of being cheaper, still very comfortable and reach smaller towns in Germany. If you have the time and don't mind train journey's I would easily recommend travelling this way.The Deutshe Bahn website is available in English and is worth the...
