The More the Merrier

by Weissdorn

Weekend or not, if you are travelling as a group with at least 6 people (2 kids = 1 adult). This is valid for any destination in Germany, and any travel class, and any type of train. The only restriction is that you purchase online and at least 14 days ahead of time. Even if you can't book that far in advance, you can still get 50% discount for groups if you book online, and if you book up to 7 days in advance, you can save 60%.

German State-wide Train Tickets

by Weissdorn

Just visiting one or two German States? You can buy a daily ticket for all of the trains in the German state for unlimited use for the whole day for up to 5 people. They call these Laendertickets . They only cost from 18 - 27 Euro, depending on which state they are valid for. Rules & Restrictions1) They are only valid for one weekday (Monday - Friday)2) You can only board the train between 9 a.m. until 3 a.m. of the following day3) They are valid for 5 adults4) There are no limits to the number of your own (grand)children under 15 years of age5) They are only valid for 2nd class.6) They are only valid for InterRegioExpress, RegionalExpress, RegionalBahn, or S-Bahn trains (no IC, ICE trains, or buses, or trams)7) The price is cheaper if you book online or buy from the station vending machine. Buying in the ticket office or on the train costs extra.

Rental Car Budget Tips

by Weissdorn

A car is still one of the most versatile and economical forms of transportation in Europe.First of all, if you are going to rent a car, I recommend that you choose the most economical diesel you can find. At the moment fuel costs 4.49 US$ per gallon for gasoline (1.03 €/liter) and 3.74 US$ per gallon for diesel (0.93 €/liter), which is mid-range-priced compared to the rest of Europe. I recommend something like a VW Lupo turbo diesel, because it will offer you the following advantages: - It only consumes 3-4 liters / 100 km, despite how fast you drive it.- You can drive up to 170 kmph on the Autobahn (106 mph)- You can park it in any small space in the city.- It's in the lower day price range on the agency list.Shop in Internet before you you rent your car in Germany. Seldom are the package prices from your travel agent less than the ones you book yourself. Remember, the longer period you...

Trains

by mirchica

As in most countries in Germany are also several categories of trains. We had the chance to travel with the fastest one. I have traveled a lot by trains but that one just amazed me (or I have used trains only in Eastern Europe). It was as comfortable as in a comfort bus, warm, pleasant, with clean toilet – things that are very untypical for what I’ve seen. And it took a distance of around 250km for 2 hours. If you can book your thickets early you could have them on a good price. We paid 30 EUR for 2 persons from Frankfurt to Nurnberg!!!

Frankfurt Hahn Airport

by mirchica

It is a little airport and mainly low cost companies use it. The problem is that is located on 120 km far from the nearest big connection – Frankfurt. There is a regular bus line between the 2 points. Also there are connections for Cologne, Luxemburg and some other smaller cities. But anyway it is a normal airport with its shops and cafes. It’s perfect for budget travelers.

CAR: Get your car prepared for winter !!!

by Trekki

(Haha, I love VT and the way it memorises things = tip dates and things.... I just leave the first part of the tip the way I wrote it in November 2006 and write the update as of Deceber 2010. It is up to you to decide if we are a buerocratic law-obsesses country or not...)Since just recently (October 2006), we have a new law here for driving in winter (conditions). All cars MUST have appropriate tyres and frost protection, when being on the road.If a car constrains traffic or causes an accident and does NOT have the appropriate equipment, the driver will be fined with 40 - 60 Euro.Haha, I laughed quite much, as this law does not really define what kind of tyres they expect. It is all - as so many new laws here - a bit fuzzy. My recommendation:check with your local auto association to see if your car meets the "requirement", when you plan to come here in winter.Nevertheless, I won't give...

Cheap advance train tickets from DB

by budapest8

I often have to travel to Sweden, Belgium and the UK to or ftom Hungary so have to travel throughGermany by train if I'm going overland. The thing is to check ticket prices at least 3 weeksahead of your trip so to find the cheap prices.Going to www.db.de and then clicking onthe English language icon and then checking onprices. I now have bought a 3 leg journey fromBrussels to Budapest, but bought it in parts as the fulllength can not be purchased online as one ticketunless ordering many weeks in advance. So I bought the Brussels to Frankfurt leg first looking for the €29 tickets, then €39 ones. Next bought Frankfurt to Vienna part for €29.I then chose the print Online ticket option when purchasingand took the tickets to the International Ticket office where I got the special offer of €13 for Vienna to Budapest legwhen producing the other connecting tickets. You can also pick up Brussels to...
