Ticket Machines - A Few Basic Hints

by Kathrin_E

Ticket machines are a nuisance. They are different from city to city and Verkehrsverbund to Verkehrsverbund. Even locals struggle with them. In a new place even we need a lesson to deal with these things for the first time. So don't hesitate to ask people around you for help if you don't get by. So here are a few basic rules that are valid for most of them - since there is such a wide variety of systems there might be exceptions from the rule.As a rule of thumb, these things always want two bits of information from you, and these must be entered in the right order: 1. destination, 2. what kind of ticket. The machine then displays the price. Have the money ready because they don't hold on to your entry very long, they cancel it after about 30 seconds if they are not 'fed' with money. 1. Where do you want to go? City and Verkehrsverbund ticket machines want a number or letter for the...

Discounted Train Tickets

by travelfrosch

Train prices in Germany have increased significantly since I lived here, with trips costing roughly as much in Euros as they used to in Deutsche Marks (nearly double). But you can save some money if you plan ahead and book specific trains in advance. Here are your money-saving options in Germany:Sparpreis 25: As the name suggests, you get a 25% discount on the regular fare. This fare requires booking of a specific train (or series of trains) at least 3 days in advance. Also, you must book a round-trip. Other restrictions apply; check the website for details. Sparpreis 50: As you would expect, this fare gets you a 50% discount. Also as you would expect, restrictions are more stringent than the Sparpreis 25, primarily involving a weekend stay. If you depart on a weekend day, you are allowed to return the same day, however.Surf&Rail: German Rail has taken a page from the discount airlines,...

Special Fares on Local Trains

by travelfrosch

Before you buy a traditional ticket, consider your options on the local trains. There are special all-day fares if you stay off the fast trains (marked ICE, EC, IC, IR, and D) and take the slower trains (marked IRE, RE, RB, and S). On some routes, the trip is not that much slower (though you might need to change trains a few times) and you can save a lot of money; examples that come to mind are Munich-Salzburg (valid on these tickets as long as you don't go beyond Salzburg) and the German portion of the Munich-Prague trip (to the border station of Furth im Wald). Here are the options you have to choose from:Schönes Wochenende Ticket: This ticket, whose name translates to "nice weekend" or "happy weekend," is valid on any weekend day from 12PM - 3AM for up to 5 people aged 14 and older (parents may bring their children under 14 years old at no extra cost), for all local trains in the...

The German Rail System

by travelfrosch

Deutsche Bahn (DB), or German Rail, is very efficient and easy to use. There are direct rail connections from Frankfurt Airport, while other airports such as Munich and Stuttgart are connected by the S-Bahn (commuter rail) to the main rail lines. Eurail "Global" passes are valid on the rail system, as are the Eurail Selectpasses (the ones that include Germany, of course...). Before you use your pass be sure to validate it at a DB counter or travel center (they are at most major airports in Germany). NOTE: If you are staying near the airport you flew into, you might want to purchase an inexpensive ticket, rather than use up a day of your railpass validity.Should you choose to purchase point-to-point tickets, you can do so on the web, at ticket machines in train stations, at a ticket counter, at an authorized DB travel agency, by phone, or even on the train itself; the conductors even have...

Be at the door...

by christine.j

...when the train stops! Many tourists have told me about this and just last night I saw it happen again: The trains pulls into the station, some tourists get up from their seats, take down their luggage, collect their handbags, pick up their newspaper and start walking towards the door. Only by the time they've reached it, the train is moving again and the poor tourists are stuck until the next stop.Last night an American couple was very upset, but there was nothing the conductor could do about it, they had to travel for another 30 minutes, then go back, losing a lot of time and money. With the exception of a few dead-end train stations like Frankfurt/Main for example, trains will only stop in the station for a few minutes, just long enough for people to get off and get on.You have to be ready to get off when the train pulls into the station.

Transportation by trams in Kassel City

by hopang

Travelling by trams is an excellent means of transportaion to see Kassel City and its suburbs. They are used as mass rapid transit together with local buses mostly by the locals. The trams in Kassel City are actually light rail vehicles known as Regis Citadis which run on tram tracks and rail lines from the Kassel City Centre to Warburg on the outskirts of Kassel City. These trams were introduced to Kassel City in the years 2004 and 2005. You may e-mail to the following address for more information regarding tram schedules, fares etc:- tourist@kassel-tourist.de

You may enquire the route the boat will take and choose wisely! One of the most popular tour operators in Hamburg that we can recommend is Hadag Seetouristik und Fährdienst. You may also e-mail to the following address for more details regarding Hadag Cruises:- info@hadag.de. THIS Is Driving Country...

by JohnnyGeek

If there was one country where you want to rent a car, this is it. If you love driving, and love driving fast even more - do it. DO IT.There only thing more exciting than driving 140MPH down the Autobahn, is the rush you feel when the little yellow Ferrari blows your doors off as it flies past you as if you were standing still.

A sad Chapter of History

by nepalgoods

In 2009 a "Train of Commemoration" is going through Germany from station to station to commemorate the transportation of thousands of children to the Concentrations Camps in the 1940s. The train of Remembrance stops at various trainstations in Germany showing in its waggons pictures and things of the children. The stories of this children stand for the unimagible suffering of Thousands, who were vivtims of deportation. This part of history has been almost forgotten until this train was created. For more please see this webpage.
