Where to Purchase a German Rail Pass

by Kakapo2

After discussions in the VT Forum I wrote to Deutsche Bahn to find out if still all Rail Passes (for non-European residents) are available and where they can be purchased. All info as on 28 October 2008.The rail passes for 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 days are all still available, but only 5 and 10 day passes can be booked online. (Not very satisfying, I think.) But all kinds of passes for any number of days are available from overseas agents and travel agencies. (In our case - living in NZ - this meant the pass had to be ordered in Australia, and as they had got the names wrong, the pass had to be sent back to Aussie, and back to NZ... So you really have to order one very well in advance.) Here is the list of railway stations in Germany where you can purchase railpasses for any number of days: (Hbf = main railway station; Flughafen = airport) Basel Bad Bf Berlin Hbf Berlin-Schönefeld...

Kiel Canal / Nord-Ostsee-Kanal

by globetrott

Kiel - Canal / Nord-Ostsee-Kanal is an artificial waterway that is around 98 km long it combines some rivers and lakes by artificial canals, in order to help the ships to save a lot of fuel and time, to get from Kiel to Brunsbuettel, avoiding the wide passage around Danmark. In 1887 this project was begun under Kaiser Wilhelm I and first this canal was also called "Kaiser-Willhelm-Kanal"Nowadays more than 41.000 ships are passing through this canal each year, that is more than an average of 112 per day that makes the canal the artificial waterway with the most trafic in the whole world. The largest ship I saw passing through had 54000 GRT and it had to take down the funnel a bit in order to be able to pass under the bridges. On my pics : 2x M/S Caronia with 27.000 GRT - it is the ship, where I was working on for 4 years, its name was "M/S Vistfajord" at that time and nowadays it is called...

Mare Frisium - sail an old 3mast-sailingship

by globetrott

S/Y Mare Frisium is a traditional 3-mast-sailing-ship, that can be rented by larger groups of people and sometimes the ship also offeres day-cruises from Hamburg and other places along the coastline of Germany. S/Y Mare Frisum has a length of 52 meters and she has 3 masts and was built in 1916 as a freighter-ship sailing on a regular basis in the baltic Sea to Sweden and St.Petersburg. When-ever big cruise-ships like "Freedom of the seas", "Queen Mary II" etc. will come to Hamburg, S/Y Mare Frisium will offer special tours from Hamburg to Schulau and you can watch the big cruise-liner from the old sailingship, while enjoying a breakfast- or lunch-buffet.Such halfday-tours onboard are around 45 Euros for breakfast-tours and about 69 euros for sailing-tours including a lunch-buffet. It is a pity, they will not use their sails along the river Elbe, but rather go by engine !!You will have to...

day-cruises on the river Mosel

by globetrott

Daycruises on the river Mosel will start on a regular basis from Koblenz, Cochem and from Bernkastel-Kues. These cruises will mostly take the whole day and not always you will find a ship, where you will have a stop-over in smaller places like Beilstein and go on by the next ship the same day. Therefore you eighter have to take a cruise without getting out of the ship and enjoy the landscape of the Mosel valley from the ship, or you make a stop-over, stay over night and go on the next day.KD and other shippinglines will also offer cruises on hotelships between Koblenz and Bernkastel-Kues on special dates but only a few cruises in summer & high-season!For more infos about cruises from Cochem to Beilstein - please click on my link below !www.cochem.de/6kolb.htm KD-cruisesa map of the Moselvalley

Airport Frankfurt HAHN - 116km from Frankfurt/M

by globetrott

The Airport Frankfurt Hahn might cause a lot of dangerous confusion, because you might expect it to be at least close to Frankfurt am Main. In fact it is in a distance of 116 km and driving from one to the other might take 2-3 hours depending on the way of transportation and the trafic-situation because you will go over highways and country-roads !But at least Frankfurt/Hahn is the BEST airport for travels in the Mosel-valley and partly also the Rhine-valley!!The counters of Ryanair at Frankfurt / Hahn will open 2 hours before and close already 40 min before departure !!How to go from Hahn to the real Frankfurt:There is a daily and direct bus between Frankfurt Hahn airport and Frankfurt am Main Airport and Hauptbahnhof : it takes 1:45 hours, when trafic is no problem, a Single ticket is EUR 12,00.it is leaving in Frankfurt/Main from Busbahnhof Terminal 1, Ankunftsebene vor Halle B -...

take the old Mercedes in Bernkastel/Kues

by globetrott

Take the old Mercedes-Bus to drive you up to castle Landshut , high above the village of Bernkastel in the Mosel-valley. Every hour on the hour this lovely vintage-4x4-bus will leave directely at the ship-station next to the Mosel-bridg and it will take you within 35 minutes to the castle. And of course you may drive up, spend some time in the castle and drive down with a later bus. 5 Euros is the tour up and down 3,50 Euros for one way up2,50 Euro for one way downAnother way to get to that castle is to hike through the vinyards, that will take about 1- 1,5 hours or you drive upin your own car.

Hamburg-Card is a great deal !

by globetrott

Hamburg-card is a great deal, especially when you intend to take cruises on the Alster, plan to visit plenty of museums and when you intend to use the public transportation-system.There is a Hamburg-card for 1 day for 7,50 Eurosand one for 3 consecutive days for 17,40 Euros.A group-ticket for up to 5 people travelling togeather is just 11,20 Euros for 1 day and 25 Euros for 3 days. All means of public transportation will be included in section A+B, that is e.g. good enough for Wedel and Pinneberg in the west and Bergedorf in the east of Hamburg.day-tickets ONLY for the transportation are just about 2 euros cheaper every day. There are even some shipping-lines inside the port of Hamburg that will be included in that ticket :#62 is going from Landungsbruecken to Finkenwerder every 15 minutes and when you are clever and find the right moment, #62 is the best place to watch giant ships coming...

Priener Bockerl - an old steam-train in Bavaria

by globetrott

Priener Bockerl is the name of this old steam-train of Chiemseebahn in Prien / Bavaria and it will take you the small distance from the village and ordinary train-station to the place, where the boats to Herrenchiemsee - palace will start. It is just a short distance, but riding that train is also a lot of fun. In any case you will be able to take a look at this train, while waiting for your ship to come. The steam-train goes on a regular schedule and will offer an easy transfer to and fro all big trains arriving in Prien.Tickets will be sold inside the train, the conductor will come and collect the money, like in the good old times !2 of the wagons are 1st class with a great saloon like the one on 3rd pic.The other 4-6 wagons are 2nd class with wooden benches.click here for the timetables of train & ships!
