Youth Hostels(DJH) - No Self-Cater Kitchens!

by rboittier

We discovered on arrival at our first Youth Hostel (DJH) that in Germany, it is not normal to provide a self catering kitchen as in some other countries. We had to cook for a family of 7 on a portable burner in the park at night. Quite funny for us but others may not think so!

Wasps in August

by antistar

German house flies are particularly aggressive and inconsiderate, and this attitude is shared by their wasps. In August you may find it hard to stand still for more than a few seconds without getting one of the little bastards in your face. At outdoor cafes this is particularly annoying, but there are ways of reducing the problem.First of all, do like most sensible Germans and don't order sugary or fruit drinks. Water, coffee and beer seem safe, but coke and orange juice will have half a dozen of them at your table before you can even put the glass to your mouth. Even if you are careful yourself, you can't escape them if your idiot neighbour buys a round of cokes, but you can reduce your chances of attack even here.Avoid tables in cafes where children are present, as parents always seem to buy them sugary drinks to shut them up, and those crowded with tourists, as they won't have learned...

Station areas

by Sjalen

Many countries have dodgy station areas where you don't want to hang around after dark - at least the ones in cities like Frankfurt, Cologne and Hamburg. Very often you end up in an area full of drug users and beggars, and even if nothing really dangerous has ever happened to me (touch wood) I don't enjoy it. I know Spader will disagree since she's seen me actually SLEEPING in Cologne Hauptbahnhof whilst she kept guard once but I guess I was just tired and broke :-))) Bavarian main stations Munich and Nuremberg on the other hand feels very safe considering their size!

Unsollicited traffic warnings

by DanielF

There is one thing that I find particularly bothering when driving in Germany: radio broadcasters constantly warn drivers about the traffic situation (accidents, traffic jams and even the position of speed control cameras). This may be a useful thing for anyone interested in it, but even if your radio is not on, you will be frigthened every few minutes by these loud messages while you are listening to your favourite music on the CD player. There is not anything more bothering than having one's chat or the pleasure of driving in a bucolic environment interrupted by a monotnous list of congested Autobahns. The solution to avoid this problem consists in changing the settings of the radio in order to switch this traffic warning system off.

Lighters at German airports

by planxty

Yesterday, I was travelling through Hamburg Lubeck airport, and found the security staff to be extremely diligent. No problem with that. What did faze me somewhat, however, was when I emptied my pockets to go through the metal detector, and was told that I could not take my Zippo lighter on the plane and that it should have been in my checked baggage. I had never heard of this before, and there was certainly nothing on the airport posters to suggest it.As you can see from the photo, it is engraved with my name and is of great sentimental value. I was very reluctant to throw it in thte bin. Eventually, the security man removed the middle (i'e. the working parts) and gave me back the cover. When I enquired he said that disposable gas lighters were OK but not petrol ones. I have traveled with a Zippo before without any problems.I am not sure if this is purely a German regulation, or even one...

Check for hire car damage!

by SeymourWhite

Hi!First, this is not really a German specific problem but it happend to me when I hired a car in germany. When you pick up a hire-car and they tell you about any previous damage to the car, have a really good look to check for anything else! We collected a car from a dark multi-storey car park and I had to get in on the passengers side because the drivers door was so close to the next car. When the car was dropped off they said there was a mark on the drivers side that wasn't there before. (When you pick up the car they make you sign something about having to pay for any damage to the car). To cut a long storey short I managed to persuade them the damage was there before. Next time I will give the car a thorough check before I drive away.Seymour.

Beware of Rumanian Begger Children

by Weissdorn

Germany is a very socialised country. The welfare system in this country provides residents with a moderate amount of comfort in the form of paid for housing, utilities, furniture, furnishing and clothing. On top of this, welfare recipients receive approximately 400 Euro in pocket money per month for food and other items, which is more than the annual income of people living in Afghanistan or other parts of the world. Still, this doesn't stop Gypsies, who claim to be Rumanians from dropping off squads of women and children to persue organised begging trips. Each person is equipped with some note, mostly in German, sometimes in English, claiming that he or she is orphaned and needs a little change to get back home to Rumania. They have a sort of pimp, who makes sure that the kids don't goof off and really work at begging, and collect their days' earnings. So remember, that when you...

'Nazi-Germany'

by gothsi

Anything to do with Nazi-sympathism is illegal in Germany, so rest assure, that generally speaking, you will not run into any kind of overt racism in Germany. Please do not try to be funny or offensive, by saying or doing any actions that have any bearing to Nazism, as it will probably get you arrested.Bear in mind, that if you want to get on with the locals, it is best to avoid the topic of WWII unless they bring the topic up. This is to avoid saying something sensitive or offensive. It is quite unjustified to invoke any feelings of guilt in modern-day Germans, especially the younger society, who already have to deal with the historical ties that comes with living in Germany. If you are interested in the history, the best way to find out more about the history of the Nazi regime, the SS, Hitler, etc. is to visit one of the landmarks or museums spread out throughout Germany. There is a...
