Munich Central Train Station Wackos

by davequ

This tip is no reflection on Munich, a great and beautiful city. Europe from Paris to Sicily is full of panhandlers, etc. But in the Bahn Hof - Munich Central train station (M¨unchen Hbf), there are some aggressive creeps/hustlers who will wait until you are occupied in a phone kiosk, etc. to harass you (ask for money, pickpocket, or just general "weirdness"). Be alert, and be FIRM (Nein! Gehen Sie weg! Schlagen Sie es! Bumsen weg! ... pick your poison ) and keep ahold of your possessions. Sadly, being polite (especially in your own language) only seems to convey you are easy pickings and encourages them. Tell 'em to kiss off!Example photo is actually of a panhandler in Paris. (I didn't feel like taking photos of panhandlers in Munich Bahn hof). See a great Paris website at http://www.atkielski.com/ and please leave a donation for my hardworking friend Anthony. (You will want to after...

Currency

by sabsi

The German Mark is gone and we finally got used to the Euro!!!!1 Euro € = 1.95583 German Marks (DM)Be careful. Everything is much more expensive now with the Euro. Some places, especially restaurants and bars, changed only the currency in their menus, the numbers stayed the same!

Pickpockets

by lmforrister

When visiting the Christmas Markets in Cologne be careful of the pickpockets. Because the markets are so busy, you will not notice if anyone has taken anything which is why i would suggest taking only a small amount of money and leave credit cards and other important items at your accommodation.

Restaurants

by LisaJous

In German Restaurants it's not usual to be seated. Except in some really expensive restaurants. So have a look for a empty table or ask a waiter for one.If there are some free places on a table and you want to join this table ask the people sitting there if you can take that seat: "Ist dieser Platz noch frei?" (pointing on the empty place).

Frankfurt - Hotels

by keeweechic

Hotels in the red light district should be avoided altogether. However good the facilities inside the hotel, there is an intimidating gantlet of drug users and street people outside. Make sure you check times of major fairs held in Frankfurt and book well ahead. Rooms are not only hard to find but cost up to 50% more. I was extremely lucky to get one when I unexpectedly found myself having to layover..

If you are driving in high-altitude locations, remember that there can be snow even when low-altitudes have none. If you see a caution sign advising tire chains on a mountain road, take it seriously if there's snow! The road is probably very steep, and may not always have guard-rails. For extensive mountain driving, get some inexpensive chains and a snow shovel.

It is no fun visiting the mountain area Eiffel when you are afraid of hights...Watch ou driving. Germans drive very fast and get by other cars very fast and sometimes careless! Drive carefully in the mountains. Roads are small and there are many ravines. Also dear can suddenly jump in front of your car at night...

by miromi

I LOVE GERMAN TOILETS. But just in case you've never seen one before, here's the real deal. If Germany ever took over the US, I'm sure our toilet quality would vastly improve, as they have some of the most wonderful toilets imaginable--they're not bad, just a little different.
